Car Seats DD approaching max weight but only 2.4

Paddlechick666 · 18/02/2008 13:18

We have a maxi-cosi tobi and xp for DD who is 2.4 and 17.5kg and tall!

I see the max weight on these seats is 18kg but the next stage is considered for 4yrs+

Anyone got any advice on how to proceed?

Am worried about moving her up into a seat that purely uses the adult belt as she's a little monkey and will soon be able to un-click herself!

TIA

Nemo - Which do you prefer though???

Nemoandthefishes · 23/02/2008 12:06

mmm well I bought the XP as it had the better reviews and got it for £50 in boots on offer..do like the plastic seat thing but the logo etc has rubbed off and the material looks a bit pulled just from general use by ds. We also dont use the plastic underneath bit as it gets move between front and back seat quite often
The evolva is nice and seems a lot more secure/protected to me also sadly like the fact it has pink cover for dd1[2.2yrs].We moved her into the evolva due to her weight and her also undoing the clips on her britax freeway. As yet she has never undone her seat belt and even tells me she is stuck We liked the evolva so much we have bought a second one currently being stored at PILs house for DD2 when she is old enough. Although will say the evolve seat seems a little narrower than thexp but think that addsa to the support aspect iykwim

sazm · 23/02/2008 12:30

hey,we have a britax hi-liner and its great,im sure its on offer in halfords just now, our ds is 3 and 1/2 and we are in our car a lot,he looks so comfy in it and i feel he's safe in it,

VanillaPumpkin · 23/02/2008 17:59

Oooh, that is interesting Nemo thank you. Is the material nice and ..er... non sweaty? Do you know what I mean? It is cheaper isn't it?
My dd2 is 2.6 and weighs over 15kg. Her current seat goes up to 18kg so I can keep her in that for now but her shoulder straps are on the highest setting, so I have that to be aware of, so I would like to buy a seat if I see a bargain now to have it ready. She is taller and heavier than dd1 was at the same age.
I am so fussy about the material though . A bit obsessed, not about the look (though that is a factor) but the feel and so the on-line bargains make me nervous.
I also was going for the XP as I thought I would want the Britax Evolva 2-3 Ultra and so the price was not that different, but now you have me thinking again.....
Sorry I seem to just be posting my musings out loud .

VanillaPumpkin · 23/02/2008 18:01

SazM. I will have a look at that on the Which report too.
There is so much choice isn't there? I used the Which report to narrow my choice down tbh.
Does anyone know why Which never test Graco seats? They must be one of the most common ones sold though I have to say I don't like them personally.

VanillaPumpkin · 23/02/2008 18:02

Arse! Search still not working.

Jenkeywoo · 23/02/2008 18:08

We have the Rodi XR and it is a lovely seat - really comfy and the fabric is much nicer than on our Britax which we have in the other car. I also like the seat belt guides which feel more secure than on the Britax. There are often offers on if you have a hunt on-line - oh, and it comes in a pretty red and pink flowery design which is what I really liked most of all! .

I have always avoided Graco seats as Which don't test them and I've always gone on the which reports - it's annoying as there are lots of them about but I am always a bit dubious of them. For some reason we have always favoured Maxi Cosi for my car and Britax for DH's - I think Britax is more manly.

i was chekcing which again earlier and the highliner scores lowest on forward crash so i discounted it for that alone.

i think i am pretty much decided on the Evolva.

great to have a good chat and find out what other people have and why.

Thanks Paddlechick.
So it is between the Rodi XR, and the Evolva 2-3??????

forkhandles · 23/02/2008 20:17

Hi, hope you don't mind me joining in. I just weighed DS (2.4) yesterday and he's 17.5kg, so I need to sort out another car seat sharpish!!

Could I ask Jenky, Nemo and others if the Rodi and Evolva's recline easily/comfortably for DC to sleep?

Am I right in thining that you can recline the Evolva but you have to have it fixed like that, you can't just put it back once they have dropped off. An I know nothing about the Rodi!

DS often still naps in the car and it's really important to me that he's going to be comfy. I know from watching his older sister who is in a normal 4-11yrs seat that if she does fall asleep I have to be really carful breaking or her head fall forward. So I feel it's important that DS can be tipped back when he's asleep, but don't know if it's possible.

Thanks

VanillaPumpkin · 23/02/2008 20:26

We have never reclined our XP. It is not that easy to do IMO and I think once it has been reclined it has to stay that way for the journey. Having said that dd1 has slept in her upright Rodi XP seat quite comfortably!

forkhandles · 23/02/2008 20:29

oops sorry, must check spellings before posting.

forkhandles · 23/02/2008 20:38

OK thanks that's interesting. Do you not find that her head lolls forward when she's asleep? My DD1 is in a Concord Lift seat which is quite upright and it is really not good for her to sleep in, although being almost 5 that's not too much of a problem!

VanillaPumpkin · 23/02/2008 20:53

My dd2's head rolls forward in her Duo plus isofix, but I can recline that easily, but oddly dd1 (nearly 5 now) seems to keep her head up. We have had to brake sharply and had her roll forward, but she got herself back upright again. The sides are nice a big so she rests quite comfortably there. TBH though they both very rarely sleep in the car and so what was a priority for me with dd1 is not a consideration for dd2's seat. HTH.

Nemoandthefishes · 23/02/2008 21:19

agree to recline XP I would have to take DS out of it then tilt it for him. Will say though both the seats are ok for a child sleeping due to the padded side wings they automatically lean their heads on them.

Nemoandthefishes · 23/02/2008 21:20

meant to add we got our evolvas from mothercare and they were around £60 each.

forkhandles · 23/02/2008 21:22

thank you Nema and VP that does help!

Material is unsweaty and quite nice..although only been in use couple of weeks so dont know it if will pull like the XP

Paddlechick666 · 23/02/2008 21:50

Nemo, link didn't work ;-(

I am puzzled that Mothercare list the Evolva (not isofix) as being 9kg which seems ridiculous!

Which? say it's 6kg and the XR is 4kg.

I also heard via another site that i use (and trust):
"----------------

You do need to 'watch out' for the which report on stage three seats (high backed boosters). A lot of them come to pieces for cleaning and packing for sale so that the bottom looks like a booster cushion. For several brands (Jane, MaxiCosi and a few others) Which then went on to test them for Stage 3 as booster cushions, even though the instructions on the seats make it very very clear that the base of the seat is just that - the base of a seat intended to be only used with the back. Because of this several seats gained a mark in the Which tests some places lower than the EU 'score' "

So I am very now. The XR was attractive as the shop assistant said I could convert it to a booster cushion.

Very almost definately going to be the Evolva 2-3 (non iso) for me now.

Phew, it's stressful LOL!

Paddlechick, out of interest are you looking at the normal or Ultra Evolva? I was thinking the Ultra looks good for head support but wondering if it might be too much when they are older.

VanillaPumpkin · 23/02/2008 22:07

The Rodi XP can be used as a booster eventually though . I am sure I read that in the instructions. In fact I know I did!
I want a Maxi-Cosi Rodi XP/XR for dd2 I have decided for other good reason than it did as well as the others in the Which tests and my dd1 has one.
My issue is with the material to choose . I have to say the old style Harry with the velvety bits has worn very well. It still looks like new. The new XR Harry doesn't seem to have the velvety bits though.
Now I am sounding like some mad old biddy who really has no life at all. Gah!
I just want soft material, not the wipe clean synthetic stuff that looks sweaty. .

VanillaPumpkin · 23/02/2008 22:10

Oh and MAMAS AND PAPAS PRO TOUR is NOT SAFE according to Which?
Failed the side impact tests and is not recommended. (In case anyone else reads this thread)

XP we have the black reflection

VanillaPumpkin · 23/02/2008 22:16

Well, now you have done it. That is cute. Sadly my dd1 will go nuts if dd2 has a pink seat ans she doesn't . DH vetoed my attempts to get Happy Flowers for dd1 (bright pink and orange flowers). I am now thinking of Indian spice to try and inject a little colour (pink and orange and black).
