Ergo baby carrier: any reason why it seems to be out of stock on lots of websites? And not re-stocking..

I have been reading mn and the Ergo sounds good. I am a bit concerned tho that sites previously mentioned as selling them don't sell them anymore. Example; bigmamaslings

Does any one know why?

I had heard that some retailers had been having trouble with the company.
If you are interested in a second hand one, theres a Yahoo group where people sell second hand carriers and slings at very reasonable prices.
Theres much funkier soft structured carriers than the Ergo though - the Connecta is lovely

kiskidee · 15/02/2008 20:37

it is a long story.

up till the last time i listened to the story about 6 months ago ergo was trying to patent the style of its carriers eventhough in the opinion of a few babycarrier vendors it is an old idea - dating back to at least the early 90's. they are also attempting to force out other slingmakers with similar designs, saying they have stolen the idea.

ergo, since about 2005 have actually copied some of the ideas from some of the same slingmakers it is trying to run out of business.

ergo is telling other sling vendors that if they stock the ergo and these other competition slings, then they cannot carry the ergo.

in addition, i think the story has moved on to ergo looking to sell its stores mainly in large department type stores and that WAHM vendors etc, are not worth the trouble. not too sure about this here.

one of the wierder stories was of a vendor who - at the customers' requests - were removing the dye from ergos and redying them in the colour that they customers were requesting.

an ergo rep visited this vendor, enquired about which colours were popular etc, took swatches then sent very stern threats via lawyers that they were damaging the integrity of the sling and the brand. However, the New Generation ergo actually appeared in these colours!

I think there are lot more tangled issues going on behind the scenes. I for one hope that they do not get copyright on what they claim are their original ideas. I have seen the carrier that came out in the 90's and it is too similar to the ergo for the ergo to want to own rights to so many of the 'innovations' that they claim are theirs.

frankly i would never buy another ergo again and would never recommend it.

theprecious · 15/02/2008 21:47

golly! Thanks kiskidee, that must have taken a while to type out.

OK so if I boycott the Ergo then which soft carrier to go for...I would prefer buckles (I didn't get on with the didymos I had) and would like dh to wear it too.

I have an Ergo (bought before all of the problems that kiskidee mentioned came to light) and I do like it, but agree that I definitely wouldn't buy one now after the way the company is acting.

The patapum looks excellent, so does the beco. Both have buckles.

theprecious · 15/02/2008 22:02

yes, I am in a angelpack / patapum / beco quandary. I think I will have to create another thread.

I found for me the Ergo didn't even fit because the waistband was too big and the shoulders too wide apart so they didn't stay on my petite shoulders. DD also was a wiggler and a leaner so it didn't feel right having her on my back.

I think the latest ergo now have a higher back support - again a design style from the other carriers.

as said beco etc have funkier fabrics. the patapum I have read fits smaller body frames and are cheaper than the ergo but just as good. there is also the yamo, connecta (made in the UK by a lovely Wahm)

there have been quite a few Soft Structured Carriers (SSC) on UKbabywearingSWAP the yahoo group mentioned, including patapums lately. worth a try and a retrade if you dont' get on with it. they hold their value pretty well. you can put up an ISO for a gender neutral one.

kiskidee · 16/02/2008 01:49

I have also heard good things about the pikkolo which is listed on the littlepossums website linked below. I would like to try one. hopefully they are in stock soon.

amazonianwoman · 16/02/2008 11:00

Ooo yes, like the look of the pikkolo

workstostaysane · 16/02/2008 11:34

good sum up kiskidee. thats what i had heard about ergo - that they were a very unpleasant company trying to run others out of business. i bought one second hand to see if they were any good and its crap!!
i'm glad companies are stopping stocking them.
i can't find the yamo in the uk as thats the one i'd like to try. any ideas where to get it.?

theprecious · 16/02/2008 11:59

slingjax.co.uk/catalog.php?item=224&catid=40&ret=catalog.php%3Fcategory%3D40

yamo

theprecious · 16/02/2008 12:00

just coz I am looking now too!

Does anyone know of a shop where I can try these sling on?

I have tried a angelpack and a yamo, they were both good. Sowould like to try the patapum before buying. Am in London

kiskidee · 16/02/2008 13:10

i would contact slingjax and make enquiries. I think she has accommodated this in the past. also look at www.slingmeet.co.uk to see if there is a meetup in your area anytime soon.

yurt1 · 16/02/2008 13:16

OH I have an old ergo to wash and sell. If this had been going on at the time I would have gone for the papatum. Looks very similar and I had a bag thing by them which lasted years.

theprecious · 17/02/2008 09:09

yurt1 - how much do you want for the ergo btw?

OP posts:
belgo · 17/02/2008 09:12

I have an ergo, and find it great. I probably wouldn't have bought it though if I have known all that about the company.

GappyLaBore · 17/02/2008 09:33

blimey, i didnt know any of that about ergo - what a bunch of tossers.

i have an old ergo. have to say i love it for the fact that iut was the first sling i ever tried that didnt kill my shoulders ! have raved about it a lot i think.

i also have a yamo, that i got off ebay. is just as comfy but much prettier.

looking at those links tho... is it wrong to want a new baby, just so i can accessorise with beautiful slings??

suzi2 · 17/02/2008 09:43

I got myself a connecta from babywearingswap and I love it! I haven't used an ergo/yamo/angelpack though so can't compare to them. But I definately prefer it to my mei tai and wilkinet.

kiskidee · 17/02/2008 09:46

update:
recently the case has had a ruling by the US patent office. Ergo was asking to patent 17 design ideas. they ruled in favour of 8.

a babywearer's dh who is a patent lawyer for a large firm said that in his opinion what they have been allowed are so specific that they amount to hardly anything and it is easy for other carrier makers to get around ergo's copyrights. he said that it is typical though for people to go away and restructure their claims and re-present it to the US patent office so all is not over yet.

Ergo has not yet applied to do the same in the EU so this story may not be over yet for a long time.

SnappyVelour · 17/02/2008 10:26

well i must say, they dont sound v lentilweavery to me... talk about alienate ones customer base

SleepIsForTheWeak · 18/02/2008 09:42

which of these is the best carrier for a toddler?

kiskideesameanoldmother · 18/02/2008 09:45

look for one that says toddlersize i suppose, especially if you have a chunky toddler. dd is still happy in baby size meitais as she is on the slim side and likes to have her arms out plus she no longer sleeps in them, well except if we go on long hikes.

berolina · 18/02/2008 09:47

A German babywearing supplier which had trouble with Ergo designed their own carrier, the Manduca (sorry, only in German). Now all the independent German suppliers have that and the biggies have the Ergo.

kiskideesameanoldmother · 18/02/2008 09:52

the manduca looks good! the waistbelt looks very supportive and ergonomically designed.

berolina · 18/02/2008 09:54

I've got it - haven't started using it yet as ds2 is still in his Marsupi (babywearing in Germany is fab!) but uit certainly seems more comfy than the Ergo. It also has an extendable backrest thing.

kiskideesameanoldmother · 18/02/2008 10:15

ah bero, i kinda know what you mean. I have times when i go eye-shopping on german ebay. have only bidded once and I lost . Will go look for manducas now. evil
