Question for Phil n Ted's owners

SarahLeosMum · 06/02/2008 20:55

Hello Mumsnet people,

We have a little boy and are expecting another baby. Our little boy will be 18 months when the new baby comes and we've started the hunt for a double buggy. I think we will reluctantly get a phil and teds, reluctantly because I think it's the only one that will fit in our house so not much choice! I'm hoping that I will love it when I get it as everyone seems to love theirs.

My two questions: When you have it in baby mode the toddler is quite high up. Will my little boy's head hit the hood and will he be too close to the raincover? Second, where do you guys put your nappy bag, I'm used to hanging mine over the handle and I'm worried if I did this I will hit the baby!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sarah

IME, raincover not a problem (DS1 was a tall 2yr old when DS2 and the P&T came along).

We got pannier bags, annoying, but there is nowhere (unless you carry it yourself) to put shopping/nappy bags.

Lizzylou · 06/02/2008 20:58

Meant to add, it is a wonderful buggy and we were sooo pleased we got it.

MightyMoosh · 06/02/2008 20:59

one, hasnt come up yet in use, two have been hanging handbag/ nappybag with long handles so it goes behind back seat- bit in the way! but you can get 'sadlebags'for it, dont know where. it is a bugger as there is no where at all if two are in it to pop say a pinta milk if shopping, except on cover, or give to kids to hold! no space under at all. other than that v robust, and once sorted the pin thingy under the front wheel so it will turn left/right quite user-friendly

MuddlingThru · 06/02/2008 21:05

ds (now 2.6 but 16 months when dd was born) has always been tall (98th centile). Yes, his head would rub on the hood if I put it up but the raincover is fine without the hood up. I have always managed to put my bag in the space underneath - it is not always easy to get to but manageable. I have also got the panniers for those days when I am going proper shopping to put all the meat and veggies in.

SarahLeosMum · 06/02/2008 21:08

Lizzylou, glad to hear you like it Sounds like I will be getting some of those pannier bags.........I get a lot of shopping on foot.

I have the panniers - they are annoying so I mostly use one for the raincover

I have a skiphop saddlebag for nappies but travel with the bare minimum
I have the P&T bumbag but it seems to get in the way of the toddler in the back

I also have velcro on hooks to hang shopping bags off

SarahLeosMum · 07/02/2008 22:48

Thanks for your help everyone, those velcro hooks look good.

Not sure if this is too late but there is another double buggy which might suit you?
the Jane TwinTwo
www.johnlewis.com/230446603/Product.aspx
There are lots on ebay at much lower prices but it looks easier in terms of shopping basket/heights etc.
We have a Phil and Teds but I am not wild about it for the reasons you mention.
Also it is getting very heavy to push with my 9 months old and 3 year old...

Pannacotta · 09/02/2008 09:57

TheBlonde how do you fit the saddlebag onto the P&T?

TheBlonde · 09/02/2008 18:20

Pannacotta- I have stuck it on in place of one of the panniers
After 6 mths of being in 2 toddler mode I have finally stuck the bumper bar wotsit on the front so now the bags are much easier to attach

SarahLeosMum · 09/02/2008 19:18

Not too late Pannacotta I think I'm going to be pondering this for the next 2 months or so!!! I discounted the Jane as it's too heavy for me

I like this buggy a lot.

My DS looks like a four year old and he still fits into the toddler seat.

We just put nappies in a small bag in the basket. You wouldn't be able to hang a changing bag from the buggy.

accessorizequeen · 09/02/2008 20:06

Whilst all you p&t owners are here, can any of you tell me how the baby actually fits into it with toddler? I've looked for a video, but it seems to be glossed over somewhat. Baby is underneath, toddler on top, yes? But would the baby be facing me, could I see him/her when I looked down? Do you just slide the cocoon in or does it buckle on somehow? There's nowhere near me to look at one. DS2 will be 22 months when db is born, so I'm just considering options although I don't want to give up my mountain buggy! Thanks!

WinkyWinkola · 09/02/2008 20:11

You slide the cocoon in underneath the toddler seat so that the baby's face looks up at you.

Then when the baby is sitting up, you swap the toddler seat down underneath. And you bundle up the fabric that the baby was lying in to form the new toddler seat.

Hope this helps..

kittywise · 09/02/2008 20:13

I bought one from a friend when the baby was big enough to go on top and the bigger baby underneath.

It is useful size wise, but I find it a bugger to steer and is very unstable when going front wards down a step. It always tries to topple over to the side. If it weren't for the ease of the size I wouldn't use it.

WinkyWinkola · 09/02/2008 20:13

The smaller child should always go underneath.

kittywise · 09/02/2008 20:17

oh, that's interesting, why's that?
The one's I see being pushed round always have the bigger on underneath and that's how my friend told me to use it

Pannacotta · 09/02/2008 21:18

SarahLeosMum, the Jane TwinToo only weighs 9kg!
That is 2kg lighter than the P&T in single mode, it prob weighs more with the double seat attached.

Pannacotta · 09/02/2008 21:21

Here is a batter spec of the Twin Two, wish it had been around when DS2 was born....

WinkyWinkola · 09/02/2008 21:23

But it's bottom heavy if you put the bigger child underneath and could topple over very easily.

accessorizequeen · 09/02/2008 21:44

Thanks, Winky. I think I get it now although I have read that it's a problem between 4-6 months when the baby is too big for the cocoon but too small for the toddler seat?
The twintoo looks as though it wouldn't be that comfy to push as no air tyres?

TheBlonde · 09/02/2008 22:07

I use my P&T the incorrect way with the larger child underneath as he tends to want to get in and out and then you have to keep moving the baby

It is fine if they stay seated but it can topple - only happened once so far

I had the baby in the toddler seat from 4 mths

The cocoon does clip in to the harness but I never bothered doing that

The twin two is much more bus-like and I expect the P&T is easier to push despite the additional weight

Pannacotta · 09/02/2008 22:13

Have to say that I find the P&T quite hard to push, but that may be more to do with the combined weight of my two heffalumps than the buggy.
The Twin Two has an aluminium chassis like the Bugaboo, so it ought to feel quite light to push, have never felt that about the P&T. It's narrow yes, but not light (IMO anyway)...

DforDiva · 09/02/2008 22:20

im about to have phil teds sport, i have 5m old baby, and almost 3 yr old dd. dd didnt use buggy since 20m. i want phil and teds as dd can be too independent whilst we out. i hope it will enable 3of us go out for walk. im hope i will be able to strapp her into seat when she throws tantrums and etc..
what was it about topples over thing??? i had micralite and sold it as it used to fall back. will it be too heavy to push with two?
dd 16kilos+ ds 10kilos+ plus buggy? will have arms like arnold

Pannacotta · 09/02/2008 22:22

Diva these are similar weights to my two boys.
I can push it with them both in, but really struggle to get it over high curbs etc. It is also very hard work pushing them up a hill.
