Question for Phil n Ted's owners

SarahLeosMum · 06/02/2008 20:55

Hello Mumsnet people,

We have a little boy and are expecting another baby. Our little boy will be 18 months when the new baby comes and we've started the hunt for a double buggy. I think we will reluctantly get a phil and teds, reluctantly because I think it's the only one that will fit in our house so not much choice! I'm hoping that I will love it when I get it as everyone seems to love theirs.

My two questions: When you have it in baby mode the toddler is quite high up. Will my little boy's head hit the hood and will he be too close to the raincover? Second, where do you guys put your nappy bag, I'm used to hanging mine over the handle and I'm worried if I did this I will hit the baby!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sarah

sounds no good to me, as we live in village with many hills, specially we live quite high up. i had jane slalom going down is also danger as pushchair used to pull fast, i loved slalom as it had handbrake that i can control it. i often see other mums almost rolling down hill or struggling to pull buggy back.
we are having right trouble as when i go out with two, dd will run off or throw tantrum. she refuse to use reins. we ended up all in tears, i dont know how mnay times i swore not go out with tem again

Pannacotta · 09/02/2008 22:35

Its hard isnt it?
DS1 is 3 but still not keen on or reliable if walking, also runs off etc, which is why we got the P&T.
Sorry not sure what to suggest, might be worth you starting a new thread on it, there are loads of buggy experts around.

TheBlonde · 09/02/2008 22:56

Have you tried those rucksacks that are like reins?

Beesmummy · 09/02/2008 23:17

What about the iCandy Pear?
www.icandyuk.com/pear.htm
the only thing that puts me off is that you have to take it apart to put it in the boot and that sounds a hassle.
But if you don't have to get in and out of the car with it a lot, it looks really good.
I have currently given up on the idea of a double and just bought a Baby Jogger City Mini for my 18 month old (which folds up with one hand in a flash (really), is really tough but light (7kg) etc, so I can chuck it in and out of the boot in seconds) and I am going to keep the baby in a Bushbaby sling for the first few months, then think again.
I am so pleased with the Baby Jogger for so many reasons.
It is £199, but you don't have to buy loads of extras, the hood is huge, so you really don't need any sunshade, or even raincover, I LOVE the way it folds so flat in one second, it goes flat for a newborn, but is also really comfortable for a newborn. You can fit a carseat onto it in a flash too, just clicks in and lifts out.
The only drawback so far that I have found is that the basket underneath is too small and flimsy for my huge nappy bag.

Sorry, Bee is currently 12 months, but she will be 18 months when number two comes along this summer!
We needed a new buggy now, so I was looking into doubles ahead of time. Will have to keep an eye on this and other threads until then, hoping that someone comes up with the perfect solution!

DforDiva · 10/02/2008 10:40

the blonde i will look rusksackreins good idea. as she might like the idea having her stuff in
i have bugaboo with board and seat but i find it hard to push with two on, tbh im not pleased with bugaboo, thinking how much it cost me

FillyjonkisCALM · 10/02/2008 10:48

i like the p&t but

I have always stuck the older child in the lower seat. OTOH my ds is tall and thin and there was, after about a year, not a huge amount of weight difference (22 month gap)

If you are worried about tipping, there are special weight things you can get-gltc does them, I think? They go on the front and weight it down. I expect one of those dumbell strap thingies woudl have much the same effect... But it has NEVER tipped on me, never, I think its quite well designed from that pov.

IMO the kids fight to go in the lower bit

oh also I don't use pannier bags, they make me feel like I am driving a tank. I have those clips from mothercare that hang on the pushchair handle, and then I keep a couple of onya bags clipped to them.

I do feel though, we can get people into space, is this really the best double pushchair we can come up with ?

FillyjonkisCALM · 10/02/2008 10:50

(though I would also say that I'd start out with a sling + pushchair for older one, and see where it goes. At 18 mo ds liked his pushchair, so we got the p&t, but dd was out of hers at this age)

Nemoandthefishes · 10/02/2008 11:06

I habt a p+t and generally have no complaints. Have a 12mth age gap and dds are now 2.1yr and 13mths. I use mine a few times a day at least and find I dont have any problems putting a couple of 4 pints of milk and loaf of bread in basket while in double mode. DD1 now tends to jump in and out of back seat as sometimes she wants to walk. It isnt heavy and havent had the tipping problem. However mine is an older E3 so dont know if that makes a difference. Cant stick a load of shopping in basket but then not many pushchairs that you can. I have used the hangbag with a couple of drinks in,nappies and pack of wipes when dd2 was sitting in back seat.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 10/02/2008 11:11

We had one briefly but found as they got older that they both hated being in the back.
We got a mountain buggy, which I adore.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 10/02/2008 11:13

I tried the Jane twin in a shop and it felt like I was pushing a train, lol!

accessorizequeen · 10/02/2008 11:23

DS2 will be 22 months but he's not walking yet at 14 mo so I think it's got to be a doubles pushchair of some kind. I don't mind a bit of slinging but I'm not really into carrying them aroudn the whole time tbh. Feels like they're permanently attached via boob anyway!
I would so love to keep my mb urban, I swapped it from a bugaboo when pg with ds2. But buggy board equally bad on mb, I think they're just cr&p really.

DforDiva · 10/02/2008 11:54

is there anyone who tried double mountain buggy or outnabout nipper double?
someone here recommended me nipper, as its light weight. i have mb single but i think double could be too big as folded.
any ideas ladies?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 10/02/2008 12:05

DforDiva we have a mountain buggy twin and it is fantastic.

The only thing you should consider is that the tyres can need replacing quite often, which is an additional cost.

SarahLeosMum · 10/02/2008 19:15

Hi, DforDiva I tried an out n about nipper in the shop and my boy didn't like it because he couldn't sit as upright as he liked. Also, I think he might get a bit squished in it when he is bigger. He isn't walking yet either so might be in it for a while. The lady in the shop said she loves phil n teds for toddler-baby and out n about for twins.

On a different subject, I was looking online, thinking aboout actually buying the phil n teds and I saw a new version is hitting the shops in March. I'm going to hang on now so that I can either get the current model cheap, or the new one if it is loads better (which does now have an alumnium frame) so might be a bit easier to push?

{Accessorizequeen - congratulations didn't realise you are brewing no.3 DO NOT give up the Mt Buggy, I think the buggyboard is fine - still use it sometimes and can easily walk behind it. Or get a P&T then sell it on as soon as you no longer need it, which is what I did Or get 2nd hand MB double then sell on}

Ledodgy · 10/02/2008 22:53

I have a 2 year old and a 5 week old. Toddler in front baby behind in cocoon and any bags go in the shopping basket below.

Ledodgy · 10/02/2008 22:55

should sat i have the p&T sport.

accessorizequeen · 11/02/2008 11:27

Hello AW! yes, fraid I'm pg with no.3 but only 6 weeks so early days, don't know why I'm on here really - how're you? I hated the kiddyboard (do you have buggy board?) on the MB so much I sold it on mumsnet. Nightmare to go anywhere. I'll kinda miss having db3 in the mb carrycot, I loved it with ds2. I just don't know if we can afford to buy a p&t as well. Although the Kiwi Explorer actually sounds like a better deal, I may have a look on ebay for one.

StaceyBranning · 11/02/2008 11:30

My 3 yr old never hit her head on the hood when DS was underneath. Also, pannier bags are great as is the hangbag.

amazonianwoman · 11/02/2008 11:31

Yes, have the Kiddyboard. I'm v tall though so maybe that makes it easier? The buggyboard doesn't stick out so far?

I'd still keep the MB the sell on either the Kiwi or P&T

Pollyanna · 11/02/2008 11:32

accessorize queen, I got a handlebar extension for my [single] mb, which makes it really easy to use the buggyboard.

accessorizequeen · 11/02/2008 11:35

I'm not tall, no, aw, and dp found it equally as awful to push, we had to bend so far away from the mb. Anyway, I don't think I can realistically expect ds2 to stand on one when the baby is born as he can't walk now!
Pollyanna, I do have the new model mb which I partly bought because it was meant to suit a buggy board more (and thus no need for extension). I wonder if it would fit, I only object to kiddyboard because it was so uncomfortable to push with ds1 on it and he didn't fit well between the buggy and the handlebar.

amazonianwoman · 11/02/2008 11:41

AQ - how about one of those buggypod things on side of MB and db3 in MB cot. Will be outrageously wide, but you get to use beloved MB

accessorizequeen · 11/02/2008 11:44

Wouldn't it just tip over? Could MB be anymore bulky sometimes when I have all my shopping and coats slung under/over it, it seems like a tank! I saw a link to this on another thread though?
