I couldn't say for sure Coddy, but I would think Scalextric is a trade name so it would have to be the real thing. Like I say, can't be sure!

MarsselectionboxLady · 04/12/2004 13:42

I don't have one, but have been told that the elc one is just like the others (BRIO etc). Didn't buy any as DS1 went off trains and onto football in a big way. hth

MarsselectionboxLady · 04/12/2004 13:43

sorry, misread thread. Not sure, but I know someone that I can ask.

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 04/12/2004 14:36

Coddy, I stand before you a chastened woman. A few years ago we bought one for ds from the ELC. Dh was adamant he wanted a "proper" one but I insisted on the ELC one because it was cheaper. Anyway, it IS a great product (kids played with it for at least some weeks) but it does not link up with the original scalextric and has now been abandoned in favour of a Hornby railway. Dh says it is my fault for buying the ELC one which does not have accessories.

Looks like elc only do My First Scalextric. Age 3 - suppose it would be a bit slower for younger ones?

Cinderellascarrieg · 04/12/2004 20:42

We found scalextric on www.scalextric.co.uk today - looking for Xmas pressie for dh's nephews - cheaper than anywhere else I think?

Roisin · 04/12/2004 20:43

Who's it for codswallop? My parents bought 'real scalextric' for dh, ds1&2 last Christmas, and ds2 (4.5 at the time) could manage it fine. (But dh builds it, and they only play with it supervised). Dh said that "My first scalextric" (which he thinks is same as ELC one) is really boring, as the cars basically never come off, so they just go round and round and round and round ... But that it is more robust for children setting up themselves and playing with it unsupervised. (Personally I think 'real' scalextric is extremely boring anyway, but what do I know? I'm not a boy).

agy · 04/12/2004 20:48

more scalextric here

golds · 04/12/2004 20:52

Weve bought ds the micro scalextric from ELC, we had 'my first' one for dd when she was 3, but already ds is bored of that one as it is just a figure of 8. The one which we bought was the one with the mountain tunnels etc and was £60, I hope he will like it, it looks quite good. Being micro its obviously smaller and will take up less room that the standard scalextric

That link was to Toys r us. Don't know why it didn't work! (Doesn't help if you've got a code for elc though)

MarsselectionboxLady · 04/12/2004 22:41

A couple of years ago I got a first scaletrix set from Safeways. It was a special offer, down from £39.99 to £12.99. It wasn't advertised anywhere. I saw it whilst walking through the shop. It may be worth asking people to keep an eye out whilst in their usual supermarkets. Just an idea.

MarsselectionboxLady · 04/12/2004 22:42

scalextrics even

wordsmith · 04/12/2004 22:47

What a timely thread!!! I am surfing as we speak looking for a scalextrix for DS1, 4.9 yrs old. Looked at My First Scalextric, think it might be a bit young for him. He's quite dextrous (good on computers, can log on and check my email for me!) and wouldn't have trouble with fairly complex controls. However, would want something robust. Don't want to pay much more than £50 if we can help it. Any suggestions which set we should go for and where we can get it (online if poss?)

taramac · 04/12/2004 22:48

I know its not a scalextric but I have bought one of these this

Might be a good alternative?

MarsselectionboxLady · 04/12/2004 22:49

What about checking a price comparison site like www.easyvalue.com or kelkoo?

KangaSantaMummy · 04/12/2004 23:51

we got crash and bash one last year from ARGOS

It is the real scaletrix one

good fun because of shape and ramp jump thing

can't remember how much cost though

good fun though

Roisin · 05/12/2004 09:29

Wordsmith - scalextric is one of those things that tends to be closely price-matched, so it's hard to get a huge bargain. September tends to be a good time to buy. Also it's worth bearing in mind that Scalextric add-ons are very expensive, so it really does make most sense to get the biggest set you can afford at the time. (But make sure you have room to put it up, and leave it up for a while.)

agy · 05/12/2004 09:59

Well, your links are better than mine to start off with! I think the micro one sounds great!

agy · 05/12/2004 10:50

Just going to hijack this thread for a moment to practise my links.
