Avent non-spill beakers

Eggy · 07/11/2002 10:01

I have bought 4 of these in the past, most recently 2 at the weekend...and they all leak.

I thought that maybe I was filling them up too much, but surely if this was a problem they should put a fill-to level line on the beaker?!

Anyway, I have complained to Avent this morning by e-mail, so no doubt I shall have to wait a while for a reply, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced problems with their Avent non-spill beakers?

Tx

Yes, but only occasionally. Where is the leak coming from? Is it from the spout, where the spout attaches to the lid, or where the lid screws onto the beaker? We found our leaks were due to the lid not being screwed on correctly, or the spout not being pushed completely into the hole in the lid.

Scatterbrain · 07/11/2002 10:48

Only when dh didn't put them together properly ! We've had 6 or 7 and they've all been fantastic - won't have a word said against them in our house !

GillW · 07/11/2002 10:50

Ours all regularly leak where the lid screws onto the beaker too. And if they're fairly full (or even half empty but not upright) and the air pressure changes they leak dramatically. Don't whatever you do take them on a plane and expect the contents to stay inside when they pressurise the cabin unless you really want an in-flight shower!

I wish and wish Avent hadn't discontinued their long really soft white spouts that fitted onto bottles. They are fantastic for my ds and I recommended them to a friend whose previously b/f son won't take milk from anything else. She found one in an NCT sale but has now lost it - DISASTER! I only have one and ds is very attached to it for his morning milk. Does anyone know where you can get this discontinued stock?

lou33 · 07/11/2002 11:49

Aloha I'm with you on this. I think there was a thread about this elsewhere, apparently they have discontinued them throughout europe, the fools. Ds2 loves the white spouts, but I only have one left, and that is on it's last legs because he bites them. Don't know what I will do when it finally goes. He is ok on bottles with built in straws but it's the spout he really loves.

GillW · 07/11/2002 11:55

aloha - I haven't seen the spouts alone sold lately - but I bought one with a bottle/handles earlier this year in the Milton Keynes branch of John Lewis. I've also seen them quite recently on the websites: here ....

dicussion about this aloha on thread called 'avent spouts' iirc. I also hate the non-spill. Never pound in shops the 'old' types since they've been discontinued. I mailed Avent & they did reply v. quickly, but they couldn't help. No idea why they couldn't keep them alongside their "non-drip" ones. I also find they leak if they're tipped over - I can live with this. Wht really bugs me, and ds's who are the ones that matter I suppose! - that the drink doesn't suck out of them evenly. They'll get a mothful of air followed by a mouthful of half-air-half-drink. It's really frustrating. They just refuse them.

Tissy · 07/11/2002 12:10

I'm sure I've seen very similar shaped spouts in Boots that are blue, but I don't know how soft they are- might be worth a check.

SoupDragon · 07/11/2002 13:01

I have some of the old syle Avent spouts, 2 of the soft ones and 2 of the harder ones. DS2 isn't allowed to use them as he plays "showers" with his drinks.

Anyone want them?

I'm a massive magic cup fan.

lou33 · 07/11/2002 13:21

OOh soupdragon I would love them!

Bugsy · 07/11/2002 13:38

Boots definitely do spouts, just like the old white Avent ones. They are bright blue and (naturally) they are not compatible with the Avent bottles, you have to buy the Boots ones. However, the spout is just as good as the old Avent one.

aloha · 07/11/2002 13:55

Soupdragon - you have two - one each? My friend is truly desperate as her son won't take milk from anything else and actually took him to hospital with his sore willy because he is so dehydrated! Now, if that doesn't tug on the heartstrings what will???

Ps if not, she's off to Boots. Thanks so much everyone! You are all fab and I think mumsnet has a new subscriber

GeorginaA · 07/11/2002 13:58

My avent beakers leak horribly too - getting worse as they get older. Can't decide whether to buy new spouts (to see if that makes a difference) or just to buy a completely different brand of cup. Tried the Anyway up cups once but I could hardly suck out of them let alone ds.

Best cup I've found are the tesco cups - they've got a little straw thing inside and they hardly ever leak. Not so good for milk though as they're a pig to clean through the straw properly (okay by hand, but the dishwasher doesn't cope well ... and I'm lazy).

Tissy · 07/11/2002 14:02

Glad to be of service, Aloha! I would definitely check the fit of the Boots spout on the Avent bottle before shelling out for a Boots bottle (maybe take one with you when shopping?), because we've used the boots variable flow teats on an Avent bottle with no problem at all. If the spout is designed to fit a wide necked bottle, it should fit Avent bottles.

In the meantime, would your friend's son drink from one of those curly straws? You don't say how old he is, but he might find the novelty appealing.

aloha · 07/11/2002 14:09

Tissy, I suggested a straw as my fussy ds loves them, but nope! It's soft spouts or nothing.

SoupDragon · 07/11/2002 14:34

OK email me on huffahorse at hotmail.com

As I said, I have at least 2 soft ones and 2 hard ones (snurk). Let me know if you have a preference. I also have 4 boots ones which (I think) actually fit the Avent bottles so they're up for grabs too. It may be that a few more turn up if I look hard enough!

Eggy · 07/11/2002 16:45

Tx for the replies.

GillW, the beakers I have leak in exactly the same spot as yours, even when they are half full, and I know that I have screwed them in properly and that the spout fits tightly.

GeorginaA, I also bought one of those Anywayup cups and DS just refuses to drink from them.

Think I shall try the Tesco ones, but I'm glad too find I'm not the only one having problems with the non-spill/non-drip cups!

Aloha if your friend wants all of soupdragon's spouts then I shall gracefully step back, because ds will at least use something else if necessary.

aloha · 07/11/2002 21:50

Ah Lou, what a sweetie.I just spoke to my friend and her ds hasn't had any liquid at all today except some milk spooned in, but of course, she'd split with you! Soupdragon, she'll email you tonight.
Thanks everyone!

fairy · 07/11/2002 21:52

If anyone wants my Avent Magic Cups and unused spouts, you are more than welcome. Both ds's are hardened anyway up cup users now, and there is no changing!

Let me know

SoupDragon · 08/11/2002 09:42

Aloha, I've emailed your friend with a picture of my available types of spout.

Lou33, it may be she only wants the 2 soft Avent ones which means I'll have 2 hard Avent (the 6 months plus ones) and 4 Boots soft ones which fit Avent rings. Email me and let me know and I'll split my supply later today.
