Baby carriers (again!)

Hi everyone

I've got a Freedom sling but i dont like it because i just dont feel safe with it.

I'd like to get a "structured" baby carrier, one that i can pick up, strap on to me and plonk the baby in, but obviously it has to be ergonomically friendly for the baby too and offer good support. They must be able to cater for larger mothers too and obviously offer good head support for my 5 week old DD.

What can you recommend me please? Hope i'm not asking too much!

Thanx NAB, i already have a ring sling tho. Is it a sling or a carrier?

A carrier.

RGPargy · 11/01/2008 17:21

Oh right! What sort is it? £8 is a bargain!

Here it is.

RGPargy · 11/01/2008 17:41

oooo that's nice. If it fits the larger frame i'll have it.

I don't know if it would tbh. I wore it when I was about 13-14 stone I would guess.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 11/01/2008 17:50

Goodness, that sounds awful. Sorry.

RGPargy · 11/01/2008 19:00

lol no worries, no offence taken! Why dont you measure the length of the straps that go round your waist end to end and we'll take it from there.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 11/01/2008 19:02

Will do. Have to unwrap it. Someone said they wanted it, oh about 12 months ago, and am stil waiting for £ so I think I am safe letting you have it, if you want it!

About to have dinner so will do it shortly.

Thanks.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 11/01/2008 19:05

DH just measured. He thinks the maximum is 43 inches.

RGPargy · 11/01/2008 19:09

I've just measured and despite christmas and pregnancy, it seems it will (just about) fit! How do you want the ££? I can paypal you or we can meet for coffee or something?

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 11/01/2008 20:25

IIRC postage was only about £3-4 if you'd rather I posted it!

Have just emailed.

ProjectIcarus · 11/01/2008 20:27

RGP can't you just pull the ring lsing up over her head a bit to support her head?

This isn't a ring sling but the same principle applies

here

Make the pouch bit with more fabric at the back so you can pull it up when she falls asleep and retighten. Hope this makes sense.

ProjectIcarus · 11/01/2008 20:30

aha hold on. There is no carrier that you can do a front facing carry in and support their head if they fall asleep. Try just having her facing in with the pouch business as above.

RGPargy · 11/01/2008 20:39

NAB - nah, let's meet. It'll do me us good to get out and socialise, even if it's for half an hour!

OP posts:
RGPargy · 11/01/2008 20:43

ProjectIcarus - i do have her facing in towards me and i have tried pulling the sling up onto the back of her head but she is so little her head just falls really far to the side.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 11/01/2008 20:43

Okay!

have emailed you

WendyWeber · 11/01/2008 20:45

They've got one of those smallish padded ones that you can use with the baby facing either way in Lidl atm for only £9.99!!!

No idea how good it is or not but what a bargain (and Lidl stuff is German, usually good quality)

Disclaimer: have only read OP

NoIHaventChangedMyName · 11/01/2008 20:51

FWIW I found the freedom sling awkward. Couldn't get to grips with it. Not so the one I have now. Which reminds me to sell it on ebay!!

ProjectIcarus · 11/01/2008 20:52

Facing outwards without legs tucked in froggy style is not good for babies hips. Instead of being in a sitting position they are dangling with all their weight on their the pelvis. As the baby gets bigger the position is made worse by the jostling of the parents legs as they move around.

RGPargy · 11/01/2008 21:00

NoIhaventchangedmyname - which one do you have?

PI - what are you on about? We've not mentioned frog style carriers lol.

OP posts:
ProjectIcarus · 11/01/2008 21:08

Those baby bjorn alikes. They are horrible for babies spines.

see here for many instruction videos here

Froggy style legs. babies legs with knees up and feet crossed. This is the correct positioning in a ring sling in a front facing carry.
