Best sausages?

Is there such a thing as a really good quality meat sausage?

Having looked at the labels most of them seem to have less than 50 per cent meat.

Anyone got a top sausage?!

Duchy originals free range pork ones are good, so are Helen Browning's organic chipolatas. You can get both in Sainsbos, Waitrose etc.

unicorn · 19/11/2004 09:30

ta marina.. do they have a high meat content?

We have the M&S Premium Pork Sausages - they have 93% meat content.

Marina · 19/11/2004 09:33

Very. Over 85% I think and the filler is tasty and good quality. Duchy are slightly spicier (more liberal use of black pepper I think) than the Helen Browning, which are aimed specifically at the younger market. While we're on the subject, Helen's bacon is the best I have ever bought in any supermarket. Also organic. Worth every penny.

JanH · 19/11/2004 09:36

Sainsburys Taste the Diff and Tesco Finest both have c 90% meat. (However you have to be aware that, particularly with the cheaper kinds, "meat" includes stuff that you might not choose to eat...)

Marina · 19/11/2004 09:38

Nail on the head there, Janh! Some of the very best sausages are not ultra-high in "meat" content - good quality filler in moderation is what makes a sausage a sausage IYSWIM!

Carameli · 19/11/2004 09:55

we usually get the tesco finest ones, they are yummy. Also in waitrose there were some lovely ones with paprika and some other stuff. But I am not sure about the meat content %. They were delicious though.

agy · 19/11/2004 09:59

I'm not veggie but my favourite sausages for taste are Linda Macartney ones. No meat at all!

GeorginaA · 19/11/2004 10:08

We're fond of Richmond sausages in this house... not sure of the meat content though

Marina · 19/11/2004 10:13

Georgina, my mum adores them too! Erm, they look a bit pink and smooth-textured for my liking

babster · 19/11/2004 10:15

Tesco Finest chiplolatas - yum!

bottersnike · 19/11/2004 11:12

Both Duchy and Helen Browning sausages are wrapped in pork skins too, rather than beef skins, which cheaper sausages are.
This means A) healthier and b) you don't have to prick them before cooking.

Marina · 19/11/2004 11:14

I didn't know that bottersnike.

JoolsToo · 19/11/2004 11:14

Tesco's Finest certainly are fine.

We also had some Lincolnshire ones from the butchers counter at Booths - they were scrummy!

Marina · 19/11/2004 11:19

There was a very appreciative piece in the paper about Booths last week JoolsToo. They sound like a really excellent, slightly old-fashioned supermarket. Plenty of regional produce etc.
Wish we had them "down south"

PuffTheMagicDragon · 19/11/2004 11:27

Top sausages in our house are the Duchy Originals ones (Prince Charles' one and only good idea ).

Marina · 19/11/2004 11:28

But Puff, he bakes a mean old shortbread too!

JoolsToo · 19/11/2004 11:29

Marina - we use one at Ulverston - its a pleasure to shop there (never thought I'd say its a pleasure to go to a supermarket but there you are!).
The quality is excellent but as you'd expect it more pricey than say Tesco.

fio2 · 19/11/2004 11:40

I get them from our butcher, or Walls low fat sausages(which are lovely in caseroles)

JanH · 19/11/2004 11:43

We have Booths here, in fact for the first few years we lived here it was the only supermarket . They sell some fantastic sausages from a butcher in Cumbria, Richard somebody, if it comes back to me I'll post the name.

MInd you we also have Cowmans Famous Sausage Shop so I shouldn't be buying them in a supermarket at all . There is a downloadable price list - some incredible varieties (Thai Pork, pork and cheese, pork and pineapple, pork and plum with mulled wine and spices...) - and they do mail order but overnight delivery for up to 10kg is £15+.

enid · 19/11/2004 11:56

ooh second the Helen Brownings organic ones, they look a bit weird as they are pre-cooked but the kids love love love them. 'Her' ham is delicious too.

Any chance of getting to a farm shop? Usually very very good quality - our local ones are 95% meat and deeeeeeelicious.

enid · 19/11/2004 11:56

I dont like Tescos or Sainsburys - way too salty.

Marina · 19/11/2004 11:57

Jan, Richard Woodall in Waberthwaite, I think! Can you tell I am a pork products fetishist

JanH · 19/11/2004 12:01

Yes, Marina - forgot you have Cumbrian connections! They do one called "gluten-free" which presumably means very little filler but they are delicious. (I do like meaty sausages.)

enid, how does "pre-cooked" work?

LunarSea · 19/11/2004 13:06

95% meat sausages from R Brown in Birmingham. NIce ones too from Farmer's Fayre in Kenilworth (or their other shop at Hatton COuntry World) for anyone in the Warwickshire area.
