Super king sized beds

Anyone bought a super kingsized bed and later regretted it when they moved?

We're taking out a small mortgage on a superdooper new mattress and I think for the extra £100 we should get a super king sized one and then get a new bedstead too. I'm 5ft10, DH is 6ft3, neither of us is a waif... And I like the idea of DD & DS joining us for eventual weekend lie-ins.

DH reckons we'll regret it if/when we come to move cos it may not fit a new bedroom (we have BAGS of room now, bedroom is over 6x4metres)

So, all you super king sizers, does your bed fit OK in your boudoir, or does it dominate it??!! Is it worth the extra ££££? (I know the answer to the latter, just need some ammunition to persuade DH and entice him into the Feather & Black bed sale this weekend )

We have one, it takes up most of our bedroom, but so what? That's what the bedroom is for. We love our giant bed.

Magdelanian · 07/12/2007 22:14

I have a superking and there is only me now(most of the time). So a bit of a waste. If you have a big room then great and four can fit in nicely. I dont!! Bought it in anticipation of a move which didnt happen and when I needed space from xp, so yes regret it now.

The main down side is its a bugger to make. A real chore.

amazonianwoman · 07/12/2007 22:17

Thanks both

Can imagine putting fitted sheets on being a faff, but I don't change our sheets that often

What style do you have bluestocking - wood, iron, divan???

Changing duvet is a problem by oneself, but can be done, but changing a double is also a faff. Changing sheet is easy. Can I just say again that I

Danae - mind if I ask which Vi Spring mattress you have? And on what kind of base? Torn between one of those and a good quality memory foam one...

So, ILiveinhope, you quite like it then do you?? Changing any sized bed is a faff, nothing can be worse than trying to change DD's midsleeper bed with The Heaviest Mattress in the World, along with an army of soft toys, cuddle blankets, dolls etc

Nope

We moved, it fitted

DH is a chronic insomniac and I don;t constantly get woken up by him anymore because it is zip & link - spearate mattresses...

Bliss!

DS uses it as a trampoline too

amazonianwoman · 07/12/2007 22:33

I'm the insomniac in our partnership, with a knackered back since DS was born, so I'm basing my (reasoned) argument on health grounds

We have a very simple wooden frame from Warren Evans and a water latex mattress. Changing the fitted sheet is no worse than on any other bed - after all, there are still only four corners! We still use the kingsize duvet, it seems plenty big enough, but if there were four of you in there rather than three it might not go round all of you.

Mines a metal sprung frame with a lovely mattress. I think it is the flipping duvet and putting the cover on it that is a pain. No probs with the sheet or, of course pillows, just the same as a double. Think I need a partner to help

nannyL · 08/12/2007 00:33

Can i ask whisper

"Do any of you have ironing borads big enough to iron a super king size duvet on (ie in 2 halves raterh than 3 thirds)"

OR do you have better things to do with your time than iron duvets?

meepingaroundthechristmastree · 08/12/2007 01:25

I only buy non-iron duvets!!!
Super king is fab - me and DH love our own space - looking forward to little DD snuggling in between us and not waking us up

foofi · 08/12/2007 06:32

We have a superking Vi-Spring - (think it's the Regal Supreme?). We got the medium softness of mattress. I would recommend the two zip-together 3ft mattresses though, as the 6ft one we have is really too heavy for me and dh to turn!!!

It's about 12 years old now so I've started dropping hints to dh about replacing mattress but he's not having it! It IS the most comfortable bed in the world. If we ever do replace it, I would go for a 7ft one next time, as 6ft doesn't feel all that big to me now!

foofi · 08/12/2007 06:33

Also both my dcs have Vi-spings. Once we had a nice bed I couldn't contemplate putting them in cheap ones!

PrettyCandlesAndTinselToo · 08/12/2007 07:15

Buy the super-kingsize if that's what you really want. Though the mattress may be expensive, it's a trivial amount compared with the price of a new house, and you can cross that bridge when/if you come to it. Unless you think youl'l move in the very near future. A house is such a massive investment that you don't buy it for the furniture you have, not unless it's absolutely irreplaceable heirloom stuff.

But it's true, a superking will not fit in many bedroo0ms, or, if it does, will barely leave you with a path around the bed. That's what would have happened with us, had we bought a superking while we had our 5x5m bedroom, and have now moved to a modern house with the normal ditsy little bedrooms.

FrannyandZooey · 08/12/2007 08:04

We love ours - it does take up most of the room in the bedroom, but what else are you going to be doing in there? it is well worth it IMO

biglips · 08/12/2007 08:18

we have one and i cant imagine going back to a double - no way!!...ive had ours for 5 years now and loving it. Dp is 6ft but got very broad shoulders and im 5 ft 8 and i used to kept on elbowing him in the face whenever i turned over in the double bed

Minum · 08/12/2007 08:36

We've got a 7'by7' bed, which I guess is a superking, and I absolutely love it, both just for the two of us, and when DSs join us. We moved from a big house to a smaller one a few years ago, and its not fitting as nicely here, but is OK, and I wouldnt go back to a normal double. We are planning a loft conversion, and the bed size is an issue in the design, but worth working out.

DontlookatmynoseImRudolph · 08/12/2007 09:17

We have one. It does dominate the bedroom a bit but not too much. I am tall and dh is wide lol and i can't imagine us ever going back to a smaller one even just a king size. It is suprising what a difference just a few extra inches can make.

Love my superking bed. Wouldn't change it now.
I buy ordinary bedding and don't iron it but have invested in gorgeous bedspread so it always looks beautiful when made. Whilst bedspread was v. pricey and has to be dry cleaned it still made sense as i can regularly replace bedding with whatever is cheap and does the job. Especially handy when children still climb into my bed and spill their bleedin drinks !

Lizzer · 08/12/2007 12:18

Love ours, bought it last month when we moved house. TBH didn't think about the possibilties of it not moving with us as well...but then we have just moved in!

Got a luverly memory foam too, I wouldn't swap either for the world (and we're tall people like you!) Dd is loving being able to snuggle in and when this little one is born there'll be plenty room for him too.

In the name of the most comfortable xmas ever, buy one now!!!

amazonianwoman · 08/12/2007 18:12

Magdelanian - hope you find a partner soon - entice one with the promise of a v big bed

NannyL - ironing duvets??? What's that then? I don't even iron single ones. I like to argue that it's unnecessarily wasted electricity...

Danae - sounds like heaven

Minum - 7x7 is ubersuperking - you lucky lucky thing!

Anyway, thanks all, DH is convinced, we're bedtesting tomorrow

NotEvenHopingForAWhiteXmas · 08/12/2007 18:23

Ours is 6ft 6 x 6ft 6. We did have a problem when we moved because the fitted furniture in the new bedroom was set up for a normal double bed so we had to have the bed facing the window as the only way it would fit in. We've had to rip out the fitted furniture and buy new to be able to put the bed in the right way round. AS DH said, it would have been cheaper to buy a new bed

I love the space though, and wouldn't want to go back to a smaller one.

(ironing duvet covers? WHY?!)
