Wii or DS, which is better?

I need to decided between a Wii to be shared between DD and DS or a DS Lite each.
Price is about the same but I just can't decide which one to get.

Each time I think I have made a decision, I doubt myself so am back to square one.

Ds lite

fab little machine and they can play their own games on their own in their rooms or games like super mario kart together.

wii takes over your sitting room and they'll fight over which game to play

That was one point I made to DH. With the Wii, they won't be able to play it if we are watching TV. I am worried that the DS could get damaged easily though. If we do go for the DS, I will have to make them put them somewhere safe when not being played, like in my bedroom!

Why can't they just be happy with a snakes and ladder board game or something

So glad my DCs are still small, I don't have to make these sorts of decisions. However, my teenage brother is console mad and always buys himself the latest one so we get to have a little go.

Wii is fab, unlike anything I've ever used before and my DS1 (4) has had a go and really didn't mind having to wait his turn to share the remote. I really liked that you have to be active to use it, so not just sitting idle and a great idea for a miserable day when they can't get out to exercise.

My brother left his DS Lite with us when he went off to Uni so I've been playing that and the grown ups in the family love brain training, I'm not looking forward to having to hand it back next month lol. Also great that they can take them out with them on long car journeys etc. But wouldn't you end up having to buy two copies of some games if they don't want to share?

vnmum · 11/11/2007 18:55

we have one of each. our DS is only 2 but he still likes to have a go on the wii.

the wii is great as all the family can play together, it can take upto 4+ players and DH and i very often play it instead of watching telly. it also keeps the kids active which other consoles dont.

the DSlite is also good and they can share some games although some do need two copies. the brain training is good and the mini games on super mario world are also pretty addictive.

if you do decide to go for the wii, ive heard they are in short supply in the uk so look on european websites eg amazon.de as there are loads available in germany

kid · 11/11/2007 19:41

I thought they would only need one copy of a game to share, I wouldn't buy 2 copies of the same game, unless I could get them cheaply off Ebay.

I have managed to work out a way to get a good deal on 2 DSs, but the offer expires on Tuesday so its going to be difficult to get them.

I still think the DS is the better choice for us at the moment. I don't want to spend too long thinking about it as I keep changing me mind!

DS this year, Wii next year. I don't think it will be old hat by then as it is so revolutionary IYSWIM.

we are getting a wii next year maybe as dd1 still fascinated by her ds lite so no need for a wii here yet

can I just say it is such bolleaux about the exercise bit

yes its fun pretending to hula hoop in front of the telly but lets not overthink it - it is still a computer game, get em to run around outside if you are worried about exercise!!

LyraSilvertongue · 11/11/2007 20:00

I'd get the Wii. We have one and we all play it together. The DS is more solitary and more sedentary, but the Wii is sociable and active.

cremolafoam · 11/11/2007 20:01

vote for wii . not about sitting around on your own which i like.you need to get up and be active with it. she can play herself at tennis and is working hard on her harry potter score.her friends love coming over to play against her or even online.her best friend who now goes to differesnt school can meet her online and play her whilest they are both at home. i don't mind it being on the living room tv.

tryingtocookacurry · 11/11/2007 20:08

I would recommend geing the ds lites. They are very sturdy little things, the only thing that I have to keep an eye on with my ds is him losing the little games.
Also, I think they can link their ds together and interact with them.

LIZS · 11/11/2007 20:24

How old ? A Wii would be more family orientated, ds mroe independent. Would n't get either much below age 6.

MerlinsBeard · 11/11/2007 20:33

Have only read the OP so far but i pulled a muscle in my arm on a friends WII a DS/DS lite would be better, they can play games together or seperatly and you won't have a remote thru your tv or t'other childs head!

DD is almost 9, DS will be 5.8
I love the idea of taking it out in the car, especially now I have become a more confident driver and can drive further (with my satnav anyway!)

They don't do sharing that well. Their nan and grandad have a wii which they are allowed to use frequently.

I still prefer the idea of getting the DS Lite. But can still be convinced the wii is better.

I am still looking what deals I can get. I thought I could purchase Argos vouchers but I'm not sure that would work now.

Is that true of all games, cod , do any need 2 copies of the same game to work.

Marina · 11/11/2007 20:53

I read this as a parent's dilemma a la "chips...or daddy?"

kid · 11/11/2007 20:56

right, choice made but where should I get them from?
Do I really need the essential kit or would the money be better spent on games?
Seen a deal in gamestation for console and 2 selected games for £124.99

Or I can get the console, 1 game and the essentials kit for £120 from argos.
I never thought I would buy these for my kids, but looks like I was wrong!
