Wii or DS, which is better?

I need to decided between a Wii to be shared between DD and DS or a DS Lite each.
Price is about the same but I just can't decide which one to get.

Each time I think I have made a decision, I doubt myself so am back to square one.

You need to make sure that you can get them with different games. We have got DS (6, nearly 7) a DS for Christmas. I do think the portability of it is good. DS has limited access to DH's playstation.

The choice of games are

Bratz: Forever Diamonds
Cooking Mama
Brain training
Drawn to Life
Glory days 2
More brain training
MySims
Sonic Rush Adventure
Surf's up
High school musical

Not sure if all the games are in stock.

Tried John Lewis, none in stock at the moment.

Why am I finding it funny that the grandparents have a Wii???

VanillaPumpkin · 11/11/2007 21:43

Or am I just jealous...I think that is more likely. I suddenly feel rally behind the times .

LIZS · 11/11/2007 21:45

lol I have an original Gameboy and SNES - how retro is that ?!

kid · 11/11/2007 21:55

Their nan bought it for their grandad for his birthday last year. He told us not to tell anyone!

I have a PS1 and DS has a gamecube and GBA. DD doesn't have any consoles.
Thought they might like something a bit more up to date.

at LIZS - i have just dusted off my original playstation for my DC and they love it. We were looking at a Wii or DS lite for xmas, but I'm going to stick with the PS1 for now and get some lego games off ebay until the children realise it's a bit outmoded [cheapskate]

LyraSilvertongue · 11/11/2007 21:57

Lizs, I have the original Nintendo console, the SNES, the N64 and the Wii. Only console missing in the GameCube.
I call it my Nintendo Museum

ChippyMinton · 11/11/2007 22:01

Kid, think you can do the vouchers thing in argos - buy £100 of gift vouchers and get a free £10 voucher. Buy the DS & one of the special offers, paying with vouchers, and get another free £10 voucher.

Enid · 12/11/2007 10:27

I have a snes, a gamecube, two gameboys, a gameboy advance and a ds lite

dd3 (18months) can say 'Nintendo'

TinyGang · 12/11/2007 10:30

DS solitary activity; Wii more sociable.

VanillaPumpkin · 12/11/2007 20:07

Can I ask, with the DS, can you make it left handed? The ad for the brain training one shows all right handed people. Please tell me they have been that clever that I could use the pen thing in my left hand without crossing the screen.

boocha · 12/11/2007 20:48

Hi vanillapumpkin
Yes on brain training you have the option of left or right handed.

VanillaPumpkin · 13/11/2007 10:53

Oh good news, thank you.

chopchopbusybusy · 13/11/2007 11:13

Have you bought them yet?
If not and you're still looking for suggestions, I'd buy 2 DS lites. I'd recommend Cooking Mama for DD and Sonic For DS from the list above. DD would probably also like brain training. Not all games are 2 player but if they are then you only need one copy of the game. I wouldn't necessarily buy the essential kit thingy although I do think you need a case which you can buy seperately. They are quite sturdy machines but a case is good in case they drop them. My DD likes Cooking Mama, Brain Training, Diner Dash and Animal Crossing. She did like Nintendogs, but I think she is bored with that now. She has Sims but rarely plays it. You can also use GBA games in it which you might be able to pick up second hand.

kid · 14/11/2007 17:20

Thanks for the suggestions.
I did buy a DS for each of them. We got Simpsons and a 42 Classic games one.
I am going to get them a couple of more games for Christmas, plus I want the brain training one for myself!

We also have a GBA with a few games so its useful to know we can use those

ChopChop, have you any ideas for a DS game which would suit a nearly 5yo girl who loves animals.

She has Nintendogs but struggles with the commands and as she doesn't read well yet doesn't really like the game - although the concept is spot on.

Her favourite is Franklin because she knows the character and the mini games are perfect for her age/ability.

We want to get her a new one - possibly a vet game - but it needs to be simple. If necessary we can get her through the difficult bits but mini games (like on Franklin) would be ideal.

chopchopbusybusy · 15/11/2007 19:17

Sorry Butkin, can't really suggest anything. DD2is 11, so not sure what would really suit a 5 year old any more!
