the polystyrene inside one of my britax carseat is broken...

...snappped neatly in two so it goes back together to form one complete bit and with the cover back on you'd never know

It's the head part and i'm guessing head protection is a big part of what carseats are about so i don't feel happy continuing to use it

anyone any thoughts?

do you think I could get this part of the seat replaced?

(I think it's a freeway but not 100% sure)

I had one like that. I didnt worry about it much and carried on using it.

Is prob going to turn out as the most dangerous thing EVER to do, i expect. Maybe mn hosts a car seat expert and ill feel incredibly stupid.

zippitippitoes · 10/11/2007 20:08

get a new one it is fucked sorry

AllBuggiedOut · 10/11/2007 20:12

Phone Britax. They sent me a replacement bit of polystyrene when I realised I'd been sold a seat with one missing from the bottom!

lomond · 10/11/2007 20:14

Get a new one, I wouldn't take the risk!

goingfor3 · 10/11/2007 20:14

It's broken, won't provide the safety it should in an accident.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/11/2007 20:15

I imagine that would seriously affect it's shock-absorbing qualities. Phone Britax to check and ask if they can send you a replacement piece.

you can also buy new shells (ie the plastic bit) from Britax so I'm sure getting a new bit of polysterene would be available.

Lubyloo · 10/11/2007 20:30

Mildmanneredjanitor - I used to be a manager for Mothercare and you should not have been told that your seat was safe to use. You should be able to get a replacement shell.

If the polystyrene is broken, ie not glueable by the shop, then the seat needs replacing. End of.

NAB3littlemonkeys · 10/11/2007 20:36

TMMJ please tell me you are joking?

goingfor3 · 10/11/2007 20:37

If a carseat gets dropped even if there is no visable damaged it still shouldn't be used let alone one which is clearly damaged.

zippitippitoes · 10/11/2007 20:37

of course it's not safe..just the same as a helmet that gets it's integral parts damaged..your child or a few pounds

MerlinsBeard · 10/11/2007 20:38

its snapped not missing a chunk - you needa a new seat

ok you carash the car seat is in two bits the child will not be correctly secured in the seat on impact as the seat is ALREADY BROKE it can't help

callmeovercautious · 10/11/2007 20:42

Definately get a new one like yesterday! Just as if you drop a crash helmet you should scrap it!

tassisssss · 10/11/2007 20:44

thanks all!

it just snapped in our hands when removing the covers to be washed so rest of seat is fine

i'm not using it at present (thankfully it's a spare)

hopefully britax can replace the part

(TMMJ, my 4 year old's in a britax hi-liner which is a great booster and back seat and is reduced to £19.99 in argos - bargain!)

My son came off his bike last year in the summer holidays. I was advised to get him a new helmet. They said it is similar to a car seat in that you can't always see the damage. They were fab, checking over the bike and rewiring the brakes which hubby had put the wrong way around. The helmet did its job perfectly as his head was perfect and his mouth and nose were a mess.

If in doubt, get it checked, get a new seat. This is your childs safety at stake.

We had that happen to our britax freeway and bought a new seat. I wasnt happy even though it could technically have been taped back together.
