What to buy for a 2 going on 3 year old who wants to carry round a battery or pound coin all day....

So ds2 has his quirks. He has spent the entire week asking for a battery or 'pund coin' which he then wants to carry round with him. He even wants to take them to bed!

Neither is particularly healthy or safe for a 2 year old obviously - so what could replace them.

I have asked him why he likes them:
'Me love them, Mummy. Sit in my hand all nice and safe'

Oh, that's lovely. What about a very tiny soft toy? Or a gadget -- perhaps a torch: Teso used to do little animal-shaped torches that I think would be safe.

We're the same as we get older, I think. Don't iPods and phones fill the same function?

And my 8 and 12 year olds have just got a penknife each, with 15 tools, to keep in their pocket in case they need to descale fish, etc.

popsycal · 27/10/2007 07:30

It has to be tiny, I think, yes. I need to get him something - he won't settle for a 2p or 50p or 10p: 'POpping out of my hand, Mummy'. Or a 5p or 1p or 20p: 'Can't feel it to touch, Mummy'.

So I am looking for something of a very specific size and shape....

Ah, it's different from what I thought. I was just thinking of the emotional thing of having a treasured friend to 'complete' you. But I guess this is as much a tactile thing -- he wants exactly the right sensation in his hand.

Really hard to think of something so small and yet safe. Hope yiu find something.

popsycal · 27/10/2007 07:39

that is the problem.........
the safery thing, although he is certainly not a boy who puts things in his mouth/nose.....

thanks though shaun

Aha how about one of those keyring trolley token thingies?

ShaunOfTheThread · 27/10/2007 08:23

If it's the bankrupcy thing rather than safety that makes a pound coin unacceptable, what about those little washers that go with nuts and bolts.

ShaunOfTheThread · 27/10/2007 08:24

ooh keyring trolley token thing is good idea. They are nice.

FrannyandZooey · 27/10/2007 08:32

ooh I love him

'Me love them, Mummy. Sit in my hand all nice and safe'

OOOOOOOH

popsycal · 27/10/2007 08:35

He is quite gorgeous.

The trolley thing might work....

Found some plastic money in the play food box. No good.

'Too hot, Mummy'

Little plastic animals so he can keep them in his hand nice and safe and look after them?

charliecat · 27/10/2007 10:41

search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=keyring+coin

Those keyring coins have pictures...see if any of these would take his fancy.

rosealbie · 27/10/2007 10:43

My ds has some large magnets which we got from a museum shop I think but probably in toy shops. They are around 4-5 cm long and 'pellet' shaped. I'm not sure if the size would be an issue though for a 2 year old but they are lovely to hold.

Actually on second thoughts, they are no safer than a battery and magnets aren't the best 'toy' so sorry, no help at all.

popsycal · 27/10/2007 10:51

will look at the key rings thanks

The little plastic animals MAY work. At DH's parents' house there is a box of little dinosuars and he does like to carry around the smallest of them.

Wondering if plastic would do though - as the plastic money wasn't cold enough....

Maybe I should just stop pandering to him and Just Say No

Awww no, don't say no, tis looooooooooovely

Shivs1974 · 27/10/2007 11:01

Hope you find something that works. have to say that he does sound adorable!

popsycal · 27/10/2007 11:01

He likes stones and pebbles too. He LOVES going to my sister's house as she has some of those shiny stones in her fireplace. He is in his element

If you could see his grin
Good job he is cute - think I would lynch his non-sleeping self before now if he wasn't.

He just shouted to me:
'Muuuum - where me penny? Not in my hand now....me pund coin pleassssee'

OP posts:
GreenGlassGoblin · 27/10/2007 11:33

how about a nice polished shiney stone - rose quartz or tigers eye or similar? Lots of adults have them - a bit new-age-y I suppose - gift shops sometimes sell them and they are nice and cold and smooth and come in lots of different shapes and sizes...

pollywollydooooooooodle · 27/10/2007 11:45

he sounds gorgeous....can i have him???

could you get him a little bracelet and hang a polished stone/coin off it on a little chain so that he can hold it but not swallow it....a cobbler/keymaker would probably put a hole in a coin for you

moopymoo · 27/10/2007 11:53

this might be controversial but i think i would just let him have them - the pound coin particularly. esp if he doesnt seem to want to put them in his mouth. my ds now 3 plays with lego and playmobil all the time both of which have much smaller parts than this. i would keep an eye out and if he started sucking them or something i would stop him but otherwise my instinct would be let him have something that he enjoys. maybe i am just soft too

popsycal · 27/10/2007 11:59

moopymoo - he is clutching at a 'pund coin' right now........whilst eating his lunch. The whole bilions of germs on coins thing bugs me a bit too

I am liking the idea of a polished stone though - attached to something too....

He LOVES those shiny polished stones. Will see what we can find. There may even be one lurking somewhere.

I am betting he will still revert back to his 'pund' though

Large dice or a largish polished stone/gem
