sling advice for hands free carrying of 2 month old

Loulee · 09/10/2007 22:44

just wanting some advice please. so many slings on the market.....

Am wanting to invest in some sort of wrap sling that I can carry ds1 in completely hands free. I've got a baby bjorn but he's already too heavy in it.

also have a hug-a-baby (which was fab for dd1 and dd2 when they were a bit older and had good head/neck support) but it's no good for just now as ds likes to be upright. he's 2 months at the moment.
Any advice? Are the stretchy ones really stretchy? my back's quite small so worry there'd be too much movement. There seem to be so many to choose from...
Also want it to be relatively simple to put him in and out - incase i end up having to take him out when I'm out (if you get what i mean!)

the stretchy ones arent very good once they get older. you're better to have a woven one like a hopp, storch or didymos.

Loulee · 09/10/2007 22:58

are those all just a big length of fabric? just looked at thdidymos. seems a bit daunting to me...
only really need it for until he has good head support, then I'd probably change back to hugababy - but maybe I'm missing something??

pouch sling? he can sleep in it or have head up to look out kind of sideways, then sitting up legs crossed, then on hip once a bit older
my rockin baby sling is good, also liked freedom slings

CristinaTheAstonishing · 09/10/2007 23:11

A pouch sling or ring sling as they are easy to put in/take out.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 09/10/2007 23:12

I found my Moby wrap to be absolutely essential when Ds2 was born, I only wish I had had it when colicky Ds1 was little.

It is the long stretchy fabric style, but once you've done it 2 or 3 times it is fine.
It keeps them so snug and safe youcan even load the washing machine without having to hold them!

Piffle · 09/10/2007 23:13

tricotti is superb

nappyaddict · 09/10/2007 23:14

i found one shouldered carriers were no good once my ds got heavier that's all.

nappyaddict · 09/10/2007 23:15

you can't use the tricotti with baby on you're back though. ds loves that position now he is older. means i can carry him even when i am cooking.

nappyaddict · 09/10/2007 23:17

although saying that my friend has a tricotti and a mei-tai so she can do all of the different carrying positions.

BadHair · 09/10/2007 23:43

I have a ring sling and it's the best thing ever. Got it when ds3 was 3 months and I just wish I'd had it from ds1 was born - I've been singing its praises to anyone who'll listen.

It's really easy to get Tom in and out of - you make a pouch out of the fabric, lift him in, then tighten the inside and outside edges by tugging the fabric through the rings. It took me about 5 practices to get to grips with it but it really is easy and Tom loves it as he's close to me and upright.

nappyaddict · 10/10/2007 00:03

Bad Hair where abouts in shropshire are you (just noseying at your profile )

BadHair · 10/10/2007 01:15

North Shropshire, almost in Cheshire. Market town. Are you out here too?

nappyaddict · 10/10/2007 01:24

no but my cousin lives in telford. wrong side of shropshire though.

Loulee · 10/10/2007 09:43

Thanks for all the replies ladies

I too have the ring sling (a freedom and a hugababy) the only thing i find is that I can't be 100% hands free which i really want to be as I have 2 other dd's. I feel like until he's a bit older (he's 2 months at the moment) I won't be able to dothis with these slings. Do you guys manage it? Perhaps i should try again...

I wanted to be a ble to lean right down without fear of him falling out / or his head lolling if he was asleep. He always wants to be upright by the way + not into lying down in the sling.

Ladyoftheflowers: moby sounds good - will go check it out

OP posts:
Leoladyofleisure · 10/10/2007 10:09

I've also got the moby and loved it. I also carried ds2 on my back and hip wiht it. the only negative I found was that it is so long hta it drags on the floor when you tie it up - not good if it been raining and you are getting baby out of car unless oyu tie it before you get in the car.

The Ergo is also a great longterm baby carrier.

Loulee · 10/10/2007 17:52

just couldn't get to grips with the ergo with dd1 and dd2 - great once it was on, but i always struggled to get them in it on my back!

thinking about the moby - just saw the price of the didymos £70!! so i think we'll forget that one!

I've got hte Kari Me which is pretty good but not quick to put on. I am after the same thing as you but I think part of my problem is that I jsut don't feel confident going completely handsfree i.e. Kari Me is pretty good but I still find myself holding her as well iyswim. My DP uses same sling and finds it much easier to get on with jobs than I do.

nappynuttynormabutty · 10/10/2007 20:43

I really love my mei tai. Easy to put on and has a foldover bit that supports the head when they're little and can fold down when they get a bit bigger. HTH

Piffle · 10/10/2007 21:24

has anyone mentioned the close baby sling as in Claire Scott
it looks fab I'm going to get one I think...

NoviceKnitter · 10/10/2007 21:59

From reading posts on MN about slings, I think it's a really personal thing. If you can get to the Baby Show at Earls Court on the 19th it will be a really good opportunity to try lots and see what works best for you.

Loulee · 10/10/2007 22:08

god, how many slings are there that seem to do nearly the same thing????
I'd narrowed it down to hug-a-bub or moby wrap, but have now just looked at the kari-me that you were talking about noviceknitter - seems it's the same as the moby, but a bit more supportive?
the close baby sling also looks good - and perhaps faster to get in / out of? but as far as i can gather not so many options as the others.

I also don't want to be swathed in tons of fabric - the claire scott one looks like you don't have so many tails....anyone got one?

OP posts:
Loulee · 10/10/2007 22:09

good idea, but I'm the other end of the country unfortunately

OP posts:
Piffle · 10/10/2007 22:11

the claire scott one just slips on and is ring adjusted
I had a kari me and did not like it at all, could not secur it tighly enough and acres of fabric

Loulee · 10/10/2007 22:14

claire scott one sounds good then. it's now winning the race at the moment! Less fabric wrapping suits me. and therefore quicker to take on/off. I'm not very patient! So long as i can lean down without having to hold him / risk waking him - or load the washing as someone mentioned before...
