Buggy boards v double buggies

I would like to know everyone's views on double buggies v buggy boards. What age do you think my dd will use a buggy board and how long will she stand on it before the whinging starts! Also would love to have any double buggy recommendations.

I had this dilemma. DD2 is now 6 weeks and DD1 was 3 in June and was v. attached to her pushchair. After posting up much the same question on MN I decided to buy an easy to push 3 wheeler for the newborn and a buggy board for DD1. We hid the old pushchair in the garage 3 months ago and started to make her walk instead. It was much easier than either of us had anticipated and when she's tired we have "races" - as she always wants to be in front / the winner, this works quite well. She now sees the new pushchair as her sister's and loves the buggyboard. We do try to be quite strict and say she can go on the buggyboard when she's walked to x. This works well too and when she is tired she is happy to stand on the BB.

Hope that helps.

I've just ordered an e3 - yes the baby seat is low, but they're designed for offroad use so the baby shouldn't be anywhere near car exhaust pipes . Will report on it when it eventually arrives...

pollyanna · 20/10/2004 16:02

Can you attach a buggy board to the E3 once it is converted to a single pushchair again?

jennifersofia · 20/10/2004 17:50

Nope, you can't have bb on E3, I checked it out pretty thoroughly. The problem is that there isn't room for the child's (on the bb) head in the 'u' space of the handle bar. Does that make sense? That is the only thing that put me off the E3, which seems generally brilliant. Has anyone else had any experience? I am not sure what people do when youngest child has outgrown the underneath toddlerseat.
Guddy - I used to have the bb on the Citisport and the only way that I could fold it up properly was to take the bb off (the bb itself, not the housings which are the bits that the metal arms fi into on the pushchair frame). If you try and fold the frame and the housings are in the way, you could possibly adjust the housings to go lower down on the frame by fiddling around and swapping them so they point away from you rather than towards you. Basically, it is possible, might just take a lot of fiddling.

jennifersofia · 20/10/2004 17:57

Whoops Guddy, just realised that I completely misread your question which had already been answered... If you meant can you lift the bb up out of the way when you are using the pushchair and not the bb, there is a strap for this purpose as someone mentioned, but I couldn't use it on the Citisport because the basket was in the way.
Bronniemuldoon, I think there is only one make of buggyboard and that is made by a Swedish (?) company called Lascal. Anyway that is the most common one, and it is well made.

I was wondering about the buggy board thing too. I still use mine as a double when I have both children with me as they are both very comfortable in it. There is a make of buggy board called Kiddy Board which is designed to fit onto 3 wheelers. I haven't yet tried it with the E3, but I expect it should work as it attached to the rear axle.

Also, when we are out and about for the day, going for a walk or something, the baby sits at the front and my toddler who is 2 1/2 hops in the back if he gets tired. Technically you're not supposed to do this as the heavier one should go at the front for balance, but he loves it, is comfy enough to sleep in it and I'm always there to hold it. When my baby is 2 1/2 I'll be really upset if the older one still wants to go in the buggy! Hopefully therefore solving the problem of the younger one getting too big for the back seat. It takes up to about 13-14kg (you'd need to check this though), so I would imagine it depends on how big your kids are.
Hope this helps anyone who's still umming and erring over an E3.

That is really interesting, BMC, that your eldest can go in the toddler seat of the E3. I just assumed that by the time that a) my eldest wouldn't physically fit in the toddler seat (as well as being over the 'recommended' weight limit, but I wasn't too worried about that bit) and b) 1+ yr old would be too squirmy and fidgety to put up with being snugged away in the bottom. But it sounds like you don't have this problem. Does it work for the 2.5 yr old to hop in/hop out in terms of access?
With the buggy board and the E3, fitting it onto the frame wasn't a problem, it was more the issue of space for the child's head. They can't stand 'outside' the handlebar because that would be too far out, but the material of the chair doesn't leave enough space for them to stand 'inside' the handlebar.

guddy · 21/10/2004 07:34

Thanks jennifersofia

Yes i thought u could lift the bb and fold it when u dont use it.........a good reason for me to get another pushchair
i get dh to fold the buggy its too fiddly for me.
Some mn mums have said in other posts that citisport cant cope with the bb anyways.
eyeing for the maclaran.cant decide between the quest and techno.

redshoes · 21/10/2004 09:36

BMC Ihad wondered about that arrangement - seems sensible. But, you can't recline the main seat with the extra seat on the back - can you?

elliott · 21/10/2004 10:04

BMC that's interesting - I tried to get my ds1 to 'hop into' the back seat of the E3 but he wasn't keen and it did seem a bit of a tight fit (he's nearly 3 but only about 11kg). There's two years between my two and I'm assuming it will be ok for ds2 in the back seat till he's about 18 months - and really I don't think a three and a half year old should be being pushed about in a buggy!
On the subject of buggy boards - what age do you stop using them? I'm assuming that once I ditch the double (which I actually only use for walking to work - 30 mins - anything shorter or less time pressured ds1 will walk) I'll go to a maclaren/buggy board combination - but presumably once they are getting towards 4 they are really too big to push on a board? So is it worth it?

bibby · 12/11/2004 21:56

my 2 were born 15 months apart and up until now i've used a double buggy combi we2 which i can highly recommend, am starting to think about buggy board now eldest has turned 2. Is there a buggy anyone can recommend without having extendable arms??

mummytummy · 12/11/2004 22:07

DD1 was two weeks short of 2 when DD2 was born, so we bought a double buggy. We bought the WEII Combi which is absolutely brilliant, very lightweight (its lighter than my single buggy) and very easy to fold (it folds in half, then in half again). DD1 is now 2.6 and I've now got a wrist strap for her which she gets on really well with.

Wheresmyfroggy · 12/11/2004 22:13

What is WE2 Combi? Have been looking at doubles as we have DD who is 1 and another due in April. Have been looking at E3 as it folds small enough to fit in car while still carries newborn and toddler.

mummytummy · 12/11/2004 22:35

WMF, I've just tried doing a link for you, but I'm a hopeless technophobe. If you look on babyenterprise.com, they have a listing for WE2 Combi double buggy. It's just one some awards I think.

Wheresmyfroggy · 12/11/2004 22:36

Thank you MT-Will have a look at that!
