I would like to know everyone's views on double buggies v buggy boards. What age do you think my dd will use a buggy board and how long will she stand on it before the whinging starts! Also would love to have any double buggy recommendations.

What will the age gap be?

bambi06 · 15/10/2004 19:54

what about that product which can also be a seat or a buggy board , looks great to me but i dont need to use one although i did use a buggy board when my second was born and my son was 18 mths old..he absolutely loved it but i reckon around two would probably be more safer bet

Redwood · 15/10/2004 19:59

DD will be 2 1/2. I didn't know you could get sit down ones... that sounds good.

I bought a tandem pushchair, but after a while, it got too heavy. I bought a buggy board latterly, and wished I'd got one in the first place. I would say 2 and a half is just right for the bb.

bambi06 · 15/10/2004 20:02

i think theyre around the sam price as a buggy board , ive seen them in brochures but ive spotted one in a local shop to me and ive spoken to mums whove got them and they said theyre a godsend

I had a buggy board from when dd1 was about 2 as once dd2 could sit up in the tandem double buggy she worked out how much fun hair pulling is! We went everywhere on it for about two years and at the time I did think it was a godsend even though getting up & down kerbs was a nightmare and you couldn't get it across fields/parks. The major possible drawback is that I'm quite tall my back is still in a dreadful state 2 years later, which I hadn't realised was related, but I have another tall friend with a similar problem whose doctor has said is almost definitely due to pushing at that slightly odd angle you get with a buggy board, so if you are tall I would strongly consider using a double buggy instead. Sorry

I did start a thread on this myself a little while back as I was fancying the buggy board that could be a seat too. However, the feedback I got was that people who had them really didn't like them, so I opted for a univeral buggy board instead. My dd is also 2 1/2. However, I can't really feed back on it yet as ds just born 1 week ago and so far we've only gone out once with buggy board for about 40 minutes, which was fine. Obviously time will tell.

jennifersofia · 16/10/2004 11:33

The bb/seat is from an Israeli company and is called Litaf, or 'seat 2 go'. I bought one but returned it as soon as I had assembled it because I could tell that it would be a real shin bruiser! I did speak to a lady who used one and said that she was quite unhappy with it but it seemed the best option for her. We have used a bb since my eldest was about 20 mths, and it has worked well. I don't find curbs a problem, and there are lots and lots of curbs where we live!
I have found that there are some pushchairs work better with it than others - depending on the pram handlebar - stride ratio and also how much room there is for child's head between the handlebar. I could go into it in depth and bore the pants off a sleeping donkey so I will spare you!
We use the Maclaren Techno XT with the bb and it seems to work well for us (19 mth gap). I do have to adjust my stride and walk a bit slower than I would normally, but it isn't a problem. My husband has found the adjustable handles a godsend when he uses the pushchair and bb. (He is 6 foot).
If I was starting from scratch (eg new 2nd baby) I would seriously consider the E3, which seems to be the most comfortable double buggy to push. Having said that, you can't use it with a bb if you eventually needed to, but with a 2 1/2 yr gap might not need to.

Freddiecat · 16/10/2004 12:42

I debated on this for ages (2yrs 2mth age gap).

Eventually I bought a double-buggy secondhand from another mumsnetter. I bought a double 3-wheeler and although it is big and heavy to lift in the car it is light and easy to push around.

If you want a 3-wheeler I'd almost recomend that if you have the cash you buy it new and sell on Ebay when you no longer need it as I reckon you'd almost get the cash back provided it was in excellent condition.

Mine is the Mothercare Urban Detour.

geogteach · 16/10/2004 15:01

With your age gap i'd go for the buggy board ,we did with a 2 year 2 month gap and in fact DS refused to go in a buggy from the day his sister was born. Now overdue for no3 with a smaller gap and have bought an E3 - a double buggy was the one bit of kit I swore i'd never own but needs must!

cazzybabs · 16/10/2004 15:15

Still debating wether this is worth the money. Can you have your newborn in the Maclearn reclinning with a buggy board?

collision · 16/10/2004 15:20

My baby is due in 4 weeks and ds will be 2.7 months. He has just decided that he LOVES his buggy and that the baby will not be having it. My buggy is not compatible with a buggyboard and I refuse to have a double buggy (as I wont pay out for one and I hate them) Baby will have to be in a sling for a while and ds will have to be bribed to get out of buggy once in a while!!

popsycal · 16/10/2004 15:50

i just found a buggy by maclaren on kiddiecare.com which has wider seats so older toddlers are comfortable - maclaren rally twin 109.99.

going to have a look in a shop to see what its like

stringbean · 16/10/2004 20:06

I have just bought a buggy board for ds (nearly 3) following the arrival of dd recently. We sold the idea of a buggy board to ds by telling him he could have a 'skateboard' to stand on which would go on the back of his pushchair. He hasn't really used the pushchair much over the summer anyway, preferring to walk or run, so I wasn't really sure how much use he'd get from a buggy board. Needless to say, on the few occasions he's used it recently, he's ridden on it the whole way, and refused to walk, calling out to all the passersby, 'Look at me! I've got a skateboard!'. From my point of view it's not such a big hit, as it's heavy to push them both, and I find I'm leaning forward and taking small steps to stop myself from hitting my feet on it. Going uphill is fine, but downhill is a bit of a nightmare. I still find it preferable to the idea of a double buggy though.

gloworm · 16/10/2004 20:21

ds was year and half when he started using buggy board, he loves it as he can walk for a while them hop on when he gets tired. he has even fallen asleep on it a couple of times, resting his head on the pram. he will stand on it as long as needed and never whines. i wouldnt be without it.

popsycal · 16/10/2004 20:21

can you use a buggy board with a buggy with one handle? know what I mean??

woodpops · 16/10/2004 20:59

I have a double buggy as there's only 16 months between my 2. I thought ds would be a bit young for a buggy board at 16 months. I love my double buggy but this time of year in a nightmare in the shops as they fill every bit of available floorspace with gift wrap etc for Xmas. I have this week brought a second hand buggy board and it's fab. Ds loves it. I can;t see that I'll be using the double buggy anymore. We went to Alton Towers yesterday and ds was very happy standing on his buggy board all day. He didn't winge once much to my suprise. A firend had the sit down board thing and it was awful. Impossible to push the buggy without sticking your backside out. It's just like having a set of footsteps on your buggy, huge and bulky. I wouldn't recommend them but I would a buggy board.

clary · 16/10/2004 21:46

redwood as i have posted elsewhere (fave subject) I would definitely recommned a b/board, esp with a 2.5yr old.

I have a 2 yr and a 22mth gap and both times used sling for 6months+ then buggyboard as needed. It's an excelletn thing as of course can be left at home altogether on short trips and just taken out on longer trips depending on how good a walker your older child is.

Agree with some you need to get the knack, it's not easy in eg high-heeled boots but much better than a huge double buggy. I would have thought that wd be a waste of space and money (tho you can get them cheap 2nd hand) with your age gap.

My 3 are now 5.4, 3.4 and 18months and we harldy ever use the board now for DD (the middle one, obviously!). This is mainly because if it is there she will use it (as s/one else says) when she could quite well walk. today for example she walked a really long way as she had no option!
(mean mummy)

popsycal by a one-handle buggy do you mean a 3-wheeler with a big push-bar thingy? If so that's what i've got with a buggyboard and it's fine. I worried a bit about DD not being able to stand between the handles, as she did with the Mclaren (RIP) but it's OK actually. the new stle buggyboard is adjustable to fit most pushchairs in fact.

Blimey i should be on commission here!!

hovely · 16/10/2004 21:48

it also depends whether your child needs to sleep in a pushchair. DD is nearly 3 and she still needs (but fights against having) a sleep in the day, so my best bet for getting her to drop off is in the double buggy. I got a big 3-wheeler 2nd hand and I think it is fantastic if you walk a lot, which I do, and I agree you would get much of the cost back if in very good condition. Agree tho' it is a pain in shops and there is no way it would go on a bus. So we have just acquired a bb as well, for shorter trips when in fact dd would be well capable of walking but I just haven't got the inclination to stop every 3 feet in order to 'look mummy, there's a spider/leaf/bit of paper' etc.
my double buggy is a XS Twin Twister, I think it's great, but I have come across one or two doors that it just won't go through.

redshoes · 17/10/2004 07:23

I bought a bb to use with my maclaren techno when dd2 was born and dd1 was 2.5 thinking I would avoid the whole double buggy thing, but my dd1 was too short to see over the hood and tho' started off positively ('skateboard' etc) soon came to loathe it. She also whinged over every bump and I didn't like pushing it. I ended up with a second hand double 3-wheeler which I found much easier for walking with. I used the bb/maclaren if we were going in the car eg shops. I would say it depends on your older child, whether they get tired standing (like mine did) - although you probably won't know without getting one to try! hth

webmum · 17/10/2004 10:12

has anyone fitted a buggy board to a pram?

gloworm · 17/10/2004 10:52

webmum, ours is on a m&p pram, where baby is lying flat. it fits fine. plenty of room for toddler on buggy board between pram and handle.

Seabird · 17/10/2004 11:02

Freddiecat thanks for the info on the urban detour twin - I will have a 17mo gap and have been thinking of getting one as I love my single one, so easy to push. I did read that it is wider than some standard doorways - has that caused you any problems?

ladymuck · 17/10/2004 18:44

Cazybabs,
No problem with buggyboard and MacLaren with seat reclined. I liked the Techno as it had pockets in the hood where ds1 could store drink and snack.
