dying dyson - the same again or something else

Hello every-one, probably one of the less boring and non-controversial topics. But my 5year old upright (can't stand cylinders as I leave them behind chairs/doors etc) dyson is slowing dying on me and my wonderful cleaner. Today she left a note saying it went pop and there were sparks, so I may have been optimistic with the title of this conversation. Oh stop rabbiting - are they new ones better ie less heavy and clean right up to the edge, long hose, long flex .....

I bought the cylinder Dyson about 3.5 yrs ago, as I wanted to be able to use all the tools without having to unclip the hose. I found it really good, was quite happy. MIL thought it was terrible because it hurt her back to use it (so would any other cylinder cleaner) so she bought a dyson upright, and never stopped telling me how superior it was...
guess what she gave me for my 40th Birthday!!!
So we are a two dyson family!
The cylinder is brilliant for hard floors, woodwork, dusting etc. The upright is great for doing larger areas of carpet, especially synthetic or new carpet.
I would rather have had a diamond bracelet though

what is a vacuum anyway?

Cha · 02/10/2002 14:21

helenmc - how is the Miele cat & dog bearing up? I am SICK of going on hands and knees with dog's hairbrush to get fur out of carpet before hoovering. And how much does it cost? Does Currys have it???

helenmc · 02/10/2002 18:54

Cha - it's good on our 'lovely' nylon carpet. Awful to say haven't used it as much as our wonderful cleaner. Will find out tomorrow what she thinks. I got it in John Lewis for £179 and you send away for a upholstery head.

Back to the vaccuum saga, bought the Sebo 4x today and it is brilliant! I am really pleased with it, it seems to run along by itself, DH says watching me with it its like a labrador puppy straining at the lead!!
I think any company who offer 2 years labour and 5 years on parts are standing by their product. JLP said trying to get a Dyson repaired takes weeks and is a nightmare, they end up loaning out vacs for ever, probably going to get worse for service now Dyson are moving abroad.

My 3 month old Dyson is going back to Costco. The Sebo is so much lighter and easier to use, lets hope the aupair likes it!

Does anyone have any opinions about the vax vacuums/carpet cleaners, as I am thinking of getting one? Thanks in advance.

RobinW, do you think it was more hassle than renting a carpet cleaner though? We need something because our 19 month old makes such a mess and manages to avoid any sheet we spread underneath, and my hoover ( a miele) is packing up, so I thought I would combine the two. I have a steamer but it takes an age to get results, (30 mins for a small orange juice stain about 3 inches long!) I'll be having to hire a carpet cleaner weekly at this rate.

I've just bought the new Dyson cylinder DC08 with the 12 cyclones and the suction head, it is absolutely brilliant, you can see the carpet being lifted as you go, it also can hoover under the bed (unlike my old upright Dyson), and is not so heavy. It is also much better than an upright on hard floors like tiles and laminate, my old upright Dyson used to blow the dust under the furniture where i couldn't get to it!!

Ive read this v interesting as I want to get a Dyson soon as I loath my electorlux boss, what a total waste of money it's been can't slate it enough.Anyway being terrible at making decisions is it better to get the root cyclone or the ordinary ones, any difference in suction power?I think I want a cylinder one having used both at other houses.Where's it best to buy one too, argos?Has anyone seen any offers on.It's such a lot of money I need to way things up before going for the best one.Thanks.

Alibubbles · 21/11/2002 09:55

I took my Dyson root cyclone back, too heavy and the handle kept popping out when in use, or was a swsinwe to get out when you needed to use the 'wand' so in my opinion I don't think it is very good. My Sebo seems to doing very well, it's a lot lighter, okay it has a bag, but apparently uses one about every 8-10 weeks and they are sealed, no dust escapes, I hated emptying the dyson.
At least the carpets look as though they have been vacuumed!

Thought I'd add something positive to this thread. We bought a Dyson cylinder 3 years ago and although I think it cleans very well have always found the plastic clips very flimsy. The plastic on the stair tool snapped after a year and I had to buy another one. Recently the plastic clip on the end of the main tube broke so the two larger attachments keep falling off when I vacuum.
In a recent Ms Angry of west London mood I wrote to James Dyson (knowing Dyson have a reputation for customer service) suggesting that stronger plastic be used and saying I was disappointed with the quality of the machine although happy with its cleaning power. I also said that I would probably not buy a Dyson again.
I posted the letter one afternoon and the next morning at 9.30am received a phone call from a lovely chap called Stuart who said they were interested in my comments and apologised for my bad experiences with the machine and are sending a new tube free of charge as a gesture of good will! I was so impressed by this rare example of excellent customer service that I probably will buy one again.
Now don't all write those letters to Mr Dyson at once!

just reading this old thread re Dyson's as ours is on it's last legs and was wondering what to replace it with. Several posters have comented on the Dysons cutting out - this happens when motor overheats , usually because the filters are clogged up and need changing, or if there is a blockage. Having said that, I will not be buying Dyson this time because I don't think they last long enough. (5 years). But thumbs up for customer service. When mine stopped working about 2 years ago it was £35 for it to be collected, repaired and returned, all in about 4 days, plus they had replaced a few battered bits and fitted upgraded bits, such as the plastic clip that holds the flex.
