dying dyson - the same again or something else

Hello every-one, probably one of the less boring and non-controversial topics. But my 5year old upright (can't stand cylinders as I leave them behind chairs/doors etc) dyson is slowing dying on me and my wonderful cleaner. Today she left a note saying it went pop and there were sparks, so I may have been optimistic with the title of this conversation. Oh stop rabbiting - are they new ones better ie less heavy and clean right up to the edge, long hose, long flex .....

Discussed this very topic with friends today - they have two dysons, a cylinder and an upright and apparently the cylinder sooks up the dirt FAR better then the upright.
Shortly after reading this thread the belt on my one year old Dyson snapped.
Scary story aboiut Kirby salesmen PamT. This I think is why my friend seriously considered becoming a salesperson for Kirby. She thinks the product is wonderful but the sales people are awful.
Demented , did you buy one?

Just spoke tomy cleaning lady and she told me that she workd witj 2 Dyson uprights and they are not nearly as good as my Dyson (the not upright one!)

Popparoo · 19/09/2002 15:34

I agree with everyone who says that their Dyson was a terrible buy!
I think people who say theirs are great are too embarrassed to say they spent a fortune on a pup!
Mine too cuts out all the time and can't be restarted again for ages, it isn't powerful enough and bits have just snapped off. Not having a bag to empty is fine but emptying the dust container is just as bad if not worse as you have to wash it out.

PamT · 19/09/2002 15:53

I've been lusting after a dyson since they came out and have been dead jealous of all my friends with them. So it is a bit of an eye-opener to find out all these horror stories. I'll stick with my Hoover Junior Turbo (cloth bag type, 13 years old, £60 new) for now then, at least it does its job. Is the Electrolux bagless version any better than Dyson?

Popparoo · 19/09/2002 15:56

To PamT
I think this is a good idea and spend the money on yourself instead!
I wish I had, because every time I get my dyson out I feel like a fool who fell for the hype that a hoover could be worth £220.

pupuce · 19/09/2002 15:56

MIL has the Electrolux and BIL has the Dyson (again not upright).... he asked MIL if he could borrow to compare...and he was very pleased with his choice... the Dyson.
Again it may be that the not-upright ones are better generally.
I am chuffed with mine.... and I got it as a gift so am not even embarassed about its cost !

helenmc · 19/09/2002 21:47

went and got a Miele cat & dog cylinder at lunchtime today , driving home with kids - totally forgotten to go round to the pickup point and get it...ddduuur where are those brians. Any-way the suck is phenomenal ....much much better than the dead dyson.

I'm going to come out and say that I love mine and don't regret dh buying it or using it at all....

XAusted · 20/09/2002 16:38

I used to use a Kirby (2 in fact) at work and they were good but temperamental. Used to have a nervous break down if they sucked up anything bigger than a speck of dust. That's going back 10 years though. Maybe they've improved.

Best vacuum cleaner I've used (and I've used a lot!) was a Henry but I prefer uprights really - less back ache.

I've got a Dyson and agree that they're disappointing. Part of the reason I bought it was that it was British but now they're made overseas, as somebody said. Can't beat my Dyson for suction and I like the bagless concept. However, in other respects, eg, cord storage, it's badly designed. I expected more for the price. Also, mine's really unstable and falls over at the slightest excuse!

Jasper · 20/09/2002 16:50

ir the henry the one with the funny face? Red?

Demented · 21/09/2002 20:59

Jasper, no I didn't buy a Kirby, far too expensive, another one of DH's daft ideas to get the man out, I think DH secretly would have liked one.

I got, wait for it, a Dyson!!! I seem to be in the minority but I love it, it is getting on a bit now and DH has hoovered out fireplaces etc with it and it has been clattered around our flat when it was more like a building site so it looks the worse for wear. I do fancy replacing it when we move as it is an upright and the house we are going to has mostly wooden floors and I thought the cylinder would be better for them, but now I am not sure after reading that the older ones are better made. There is nothing wrong with my Dyson other than being very battered looking, probably should just hold onto it until it breaks.

We have spotted Kirby cleaners secondhand quite often, don't know if they are worth purchasing and getting serviced.

Has anyone tried a vacuum cleaner that is specifically made for allergy sufferers? If so , which, and did they work?

SueDonim · 22/09/2002 15:48

I bought a Medivac cleaner when my boys both had asthma. It's very efficient but very heavy. But they sell very long hoses (45ft?) and also now make smaller lighter versions. Look at the Medivac site for more info. HTH.

zebra · 22/09/2002 17:25

jonesmum: I thought that any VC with HEPA filters was aimed at the allergy market?

We have repaired bits on our Dyson -- DC04. DH twiddled with the power cord; occasionally clearing the floor brush. If anything, it vaccuums better now than it did when we first got it (3 yrs ago). Good thread, though. Must keep in mind. For the amount of money they cost, the sure ought to last 5 years.

XAusted · 22/09/2002 20:01

Yes, Jasper, Henry's are red with funny faces. Quite lovable as well as efficient ...

XAusted · 22/09/2002 20:02

Apologies to all grammar spotters for superfluous apostrophe in last comment.

ionesmum · 22/09/2002 21:51

Thanks, SueDonim and Zebra. Will check these out.

Fionn · 22/09/2002 21:54

Very interesting...I bought a Dyson cylinder nearly 3 years ago and although it cleans well the plastic clips keep falling off and the attachments have broken and needed replacing at various times too. So my next one won't be a Dyson unless they've improved.

honeybunny · 23/09/2002 09:11

I've just bought the Dyson "animal" Its absolutely fantastic. The suction is great andhoovers up everything. Had a miele which was utter c*. It worked great for about a week then the filter needed changing and they cost a fortune. Mine needed a new one practically every week to try to recapture the hoovers original performance. NEVER again!

Clarinet60 · 25/09/2002 20:20

I'm also disappointed with my upright dyson. I had coveted one for ages and treated myself about a year ago. Again, bits have snapped off, the belt comes off if you so much as look at a bit of fringing, it's far too heavy and the hose is so stiff and inflexible that you can't even get into half the places you need to clean. Have you ever tried to hoover a car with one? Not a pretty sight and uses up far too many swear-words.

reager · 25/09/2002 21:09

So the builders broke the clip on the wand of the Dyson. Rang to get new one. 3 weeks later - wrong tube arrived. Meanwhile (while hoovering with the wand taped to the power brush) the cord started retracting while hoovering. 3 phone calls later to Dyson customer service the thing gets picked up and repaired. Told new wand in the post. Special trip to parcel section at Post Office yesterday - wrong wand sent again. Rang customer service from the car. Sorry you have to call back with your serial number before we can do anything. Arrrrgghhh - great suction but bad everything else?

Rhubarb · 28/09/2002 20:38

Did anyone else read about the closure of the Dyson factory? As a pay-off all the workers got....a dyson!

Rhiannon · 28/09/2002 21:12

I bet Dyson hate the way everyone calls a vacuum cleaner a Hoover! R
