Driving with no insurance

So, one of my friends disclosed to me that she drove her partners car, for a pretty lengthy journey (5 hours ish). The vehicle is insured but she is not a driver listed on this. This occurred yesterday and she wasn’t pulled over or anything by the police but she is incredibly anxious and will not stop bothering me about it. I don’t know much about all this but is she safe as she wasn’t pulled over? Looking for something to reassure her and stop her from constantly texting me about it Confused

If nothing happened, I'm sure you'll be fine, but don't do it again. It's shockingly selfish.

P0lka · 01/07/2020 18:55

Is she insured on another vehicle? I'm covered for driving other vehicles, as long as the other vehicle's policy allows it?

If she's that anxious in general perhaps she should have checked before driving...

TerrapinStation · 01/07/2020 18:55

Unless she gets a speeding ticket through the post what does she think is going to happen? She didn't have an accident, she wasn't stopped, what else could there be?

littlebutterfly1 · 01/07/2020 18:55

She wasn’t in a crash or pulled over by the police but is worried there’s some sort of camera that can catch her? Yeah she definitely won’t be doing it again

I know of people who have done this. Literally nothing ever happened because they didn’t speed or get pulled over etc. For all of them, it was a one off thing, so just tell her to screw her head on and not do it again!

Well, yes, a speed camera could well have caught her if she was speeding but of course there's no such thing as a camera that magically knows if a driver is insured to drive a particular vehicle, that would be great to detecting dangerous uninsured drivers though.
FartingInTheFence · 01/07/2020 20:03

Your friend is a fucking utter cunt for driving without insurance and its people like her that force premiums up for the rest of us law abiding motorists.

I hope she gets caught soon and banned.

ShyTown · 01/07/2020 20:12

Bit weird that she’s that worried about it now but didn’t do anything about it before hand...

If she has her own fully comp insurance then it’s likely she was insured 3rd party and didn’t do anything illegal. Even if that’s not the case then nothing is going to happen now unless she got caught by a camera for speeding, driving in a bus lane, running a red light etc so she can calm down. Hopefully she won’t do anything so stupid again, the ridiculous thing is she probably could have been added to the insurance for the day for a relatively small amount of money!

kirinm · 01/07/2020 20:12

If she has her own car and insurance she may be covered to drive other cars. Even if she got a speeding ticket for example I doubt she would be identified as the driver. But yeah, she really shouldn't be driving without insurance for obvious reasons.

FartingInTheFence · 01/07/2020 21:01

I take it you have never seen/heard of front facing speed cameras or the like?

kirinm · 01/07/2020 21:55

@farting I haven't! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I've never had a ticket or been pulled over so didn't realise.

megletthesecond · 01/07/2020 21:57

It was a stupid thing to do. Hopefully she won't do it again.

TerrapinStation · 01/07/2020 22:00

So the owner of the car would happily take the speeding points for her?

Apart from the front cameras I don't think you're thought that one through fully.

DonaldJTrumpet · 03/07/2020 10:55

Your friend? Hmm.

It would be rare that someone over 25 who has fully comp insurance (although you don't need fully comp for this privilege) would not be insured on another persons car (third party only) without the owners permission.

If she wasn't pulled over or received a speeding ticket then no legal entity will know that she's a dick. I have never been asked for proof I am insured when I have got a speeding ticket either.

That being said if your friend really is that worried perhaps she should follow the old adage; if you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Driving without insurance is one of the stupidest things you can do.

This

Bargebill19 · 05/07/2020 12:54

She is a total idiot. Insurance could have easily been purchased online or over the phone to cover the journey and would have cost very little compared to what an accident could have cost.
No excuse for such twattery.
I hope you report her.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 05/07/2020 21:39

No-one knows if they were insured or not.

It is also possible, but unlikely in this case, to drive without insurance perfectly legally.

DonaldJTrumpet · 05/07/2020 22:03

@VeniVidiWeeWee I don't think they were driving on private land for five hours. What other situations allow you to drive without insurance?

Regularsizedrudy · 05/07/2020 22:06

Why is this your problem to fix for her? Tell her to google it

Shmithecat2 · 05/07/2020 22:07

It will come down to whether she has her own car/insurance and if her policy covers her to drive 3rd party on another car as to whether she's done anything illegal or not. But as there was no incident whilst driving, its highly unlikely anything will come of it 🤷🏻‍♀️

VeniVidiWeeWee · 05/07/2020 22:22

@Donaldjtrumpet

Many. Look at s144 Road Traffic Act.

DonaldJTrumpet · 05/07/2020 22:28

@VeniVidiWeeWee I was thinking maybe service vehicles but it simply doesn't make sense to me. What happens if they crash?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 05/07/2020 22:58

(1)Section 143 of this Act does not apply to a vehicle owned by a person who has deposited and keeps deposited with the Accountant General of the [F1Senior Courts] the sum of [F2£500,000], at a time when the vehicle is being driven under the owner’s control.

This is used by VERY high-net worth individuals. If they crash they're still liable but can afford to pay.

Elai1978 · 05/07/2020 23:04

@VeniVidiWeeWee I believe that was removed last year.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 05/07/2020 23:31

@elai1978

My apologies and thank you for posting the correct information.
