Good idea or completely ridiculous?

I am actually considering getting one of these

Would you snigger if I walked past you in the street wearing one?

I'm really not sure what to do about ds this winter. He gets really warm in the ergo, too warm to wear his coat so was considering babylegs for his arms and legs plus a hat. But then what about me? I can't wear my coat over the top as he's in the back carry (only option he's nearly 2 and weighs 30lbs) and I can't wear my coat underneath as I would boil to death. Last winter he was in a front carrier and I was able to wear my coat over the top, but open.

The papoose coat really does seems like a good solution, but it's so ridiculous!!

Anybody got one? Or do you have a solution to my problem?

I think it looks grest! Very stylish-but then models always look good in these things don't they? Then we Real Women put them on & think what the F* did I buy that for???!!!

Could you get one on approval?

newlifenewname · 23/09/2007 01:12

It's pretty...grey....

mamama · 23/09/2007 01:41

I do agree that they seem like a good idea. I wouldn't wear it though. I just bought the carrier and stuck DS in it in his snowsuit (it's v cold here though). When he was tiny, I had a big coat and used to wear DS in the carrier and then put my coat on over the top.

Aitch · 23/09/2007 01:58

what about wearing a really broad scarf/shawl? you could cross it over so it would keep your front warm. i think i might snigger a wee bitty bit if i say you in that thing...

seeker · 23/09/2007 06:39

My friend has a lovely black coat that has a complicated serices of zips to accomodate slings and back carriers. It's much less......droopy... than this on one I'll ask her where she got in on Monday if you like!

I think this one will get even ....droopier ....with wear!

SpacePuppy · 23/09/2007 07:38

My worries would be "do I need someone's help to put it on?" It looks cosy, but is it really practical?

mawbroon · 23/09/2007 13:01

Thanks for your replies.

Bossybritches - I can't find anywhere locally that stocks it otherwise I would go and try one on or have a look. That would confirm it's ridiculousness or not!

Mamama - I understand what you're saying about the snowsuit, but it's not cold enough here for that I don't think. There really is a tremendous amount of heat generated between his front and my back! I am talking nonsense about having him in a front carry last year. He was in a front carry the year before and I just wore dh's coat and fastened it round both me and baby. Last year, he was in a (different) backpack, but we lived somewhere else and we went everywhere in the car so it was just a quick dash from the car to wherever we were going. This year, I am using the bus a lot more and wandering about town, in and out of shops rather than going to a shopping centre, so I need a solution which doesn't involved getting ds dressed/undressed everytime we go in or out of a shop. IYSWIM

Newlife - yes, grey or grey. I'm worried about looking like an elephant.

Aitch - I'm so hard you wouldn't dare snigger at me Have been thinking about your shawl idea but I'm not sure what you mean. Would the shawl go round both of us? Wouldn't that look just as daft as the elephant coat?

seeker - yes, please ask your friend where she got hers. I can't believe that this is the only baby wearing coat available.

Spacepuppy - agree with you. Looking at the picture, I still have no idea as to how I would actually put the darned thing on!

I've just found this. It looks much better, but can I justify almost a hundred quid on a coat

OP posts:
bossybritches · 23/09/2007 13:59

That looks more practical maw, it's two coatrs in one really a lighter one AND a fleecy one so you have combinations for our variable weather. Might be a good investment, should last a while too.

mawbroon · 23/09/2007 14:09

I'm just wondering if it's going to fit over ds though. These are all much smaller kiddies in the pics. I might phone them up and ask.
It's our variable weather that's the problem isn't it! And this coat also does when pregnant, so if I have any luck ttc no 2 then it would be useful for then too. Except I will no doubt time it impeccably so that I am huge in the summer.

NotADragonOfSoup · 23/09/2007 14:23

Oh god no, don't do it. It looks like a discarded elephant skin!

themoon66 · 23/09/2007 14:27

The coat is vile... step away from it now.

MaryAnnSingleton · 23/09/2007 14:28

it's vile, sorry,but it is....

NotADragonOfSoup · 23/09/2007 14:28

I'm sorry but I wouldn't snigger, I'd probably wet myself laughing once you'd gone out of ear shot.

Get yourself a thinner coat and a pashmina type scarf. Carrier over the top of coat, pashmina to add warmth where the carrier-plus-warm-baby isn't.

NotADragonOfSoup · 23/09/2007 14:38

Make your own poncho? In a bright funky fabric it would look better than the elephant skin. And be cheaper.

edam · 23/09/2007 14:44

The first link is hideous. Sorry. If I saw someone walking past wearing that I'd be hard put not to snigger.

themoon66 · 23/09/2007 15:00

Am actually quite in awe of someone who is prepared to carry around a 30lb child. Well, 30lb of anything really. It would knacker me. I always used a buggy and wore whatever coat looked good

mawbroon · 23/09/2007 15:06

OK deffo not the ergo papoose coat then. Thank fuck I didn't post this under style.

What about the kindercoat as per my link at 13.12?

I don't want to have any kind of coat under the baby carrier. I want something that I can take on and off whilst ds is still on my back, so thinner coat underneath carrier wouldn't work.

Poncho is not a bad idea, but I need something waterproof as will no doubt piss with rain every day from now until next May.

OP posts:
mawbroon · 23/09/2007 15:11

themoon66 - I hate the buggy with a passion. Especially on and off the buses. It is just one giant pain in the arse. DS is starting to walk a fair bit now so I don't have to carry him all the time, but if I am trying to get somewhere at any kind of speed, or it we are somewhere busy and dangerous then I carry him. It's pretty easy really and seeing I hate doing "proper" exercise, this has kept me fit without actually breaking sweat!!

OP posts:
Aitch · 23/09/2007 15:12

i mean like a broad scarf more than a pointy shawl. like those wrap slings, kind of. so you could put it round the back of your neck like a scarf then cross it over your body at the front and then tie it at the side and the baby would be in his carrier at the back. and yes i know you're hard as nails, mawbroon but your dh is puny and has a silly moustache...

Aitch · 23/09/2007 15:13

oh well if you're determined to go waterproof then the second link was okay.

Boco · 23/09/2007 15:14

It reminds me of a pantomime elephant. Although it looks practical.

mawbroon · 23/09/2007 15:16

Leave pawbroon oot o this Aitch. Jings, I'll hae tae send Hen an' Jo roond tae sort ye oot if ye dinnae hud yer wheesht.

moljam · 23/09/2007 15:16

i think theyre great idea.i wanted one when we used our ergo but they didnt do them small enough.

mawbroon · 23/09/2007 15:22

That was another worry about the ergo one moljam. I am only 5ft 2" and there is every possibility that it would trail on the ground.
