going to a party - thought would be handy to have him in a sling rather than holding him

but not sure how much use we'd get from it?

Get one, they are fab....especially if they are teething and need to be held all the time.

I carry one year old DD everyday and love being close to her and much easier on the bus than carting around a pram

Tutter · 15/09/2007 13:41

thanks

which did you go for?

LadyTophamHatt · 15/09/2007 13:41

I got one to use with ds4 for the school runs.

It was FAB and he weighed alot more than a stone.

I think they are handy to have, and if yo get one that means they can sit up in it, on your hip when they get bigger its even better.

Bloody lost the thing on hoilday though.

or borrow one if not.

LadyTophamHatt · 15/09/2007 13:42

i have a wilkinet one you can borrow if you don't wantto buy one...

SpawnChorus · 15/09/2007 13:44

Yes get one. DS was 10lb 9oz at birth and I used a wrap sling (hugabub). It was soooo good. DS is getting a bit big for it now (he's 13 months and his head kind of gets in my face), but he's not too heavy. The weight gets ditributed quite evenly with a wrap sling. You could also look at getting the Ergo sling (with a newbirn insert?). This is what I'm planning on getting for DS now that's he's a bit bigger.

GreebosWhiskers · 15/09/2007 13:46

I've got a mei tai that I usually carry 20lb 10mo ds in on my front. We're just back from hols where I was able to carry 2.5 stone 2.6yo dd around for hours on my back - it was brilliant! Definitely recommend the mei tai. I bought mine 2nd hand off SabaSaba & she was selling a few at the time - not sure if she'll have any left tho'.

TooTicky · 15/09/2007 13:50

I love these
Ds2 went in it from newborn until he was nearly 3! (He's a skinny little thing though!)
Brilliant for the first year for any size baby.

LadyTophamHatt · 15/09/2007 13:53

(obv, the wilinet one wasn't lost on hols...it was differnt one)

MrsBadger · 15/09/2007 13:54

depends how big they are, but after getting fed up with wrestling with my wrap sling (great for trips to town, tesco etc, no good for 20min here and there) I improvised a pouch sling for dd v successfully with an old pashmina knotted together at the ends - worth a bash?

Tutter · 15/09/2007 14:01

you see i tried one of those pouch slings with ds1 and it just felt wrong

like i was hoicking a bag of spuds over my shoulder

surely a structured one a la baby bjorn is strudier and lets the baby see more of the outside world?

Tutter · 15/09/2007 14:01

(thanks lth, but party tomorrow)

I have a lot of different types

Last count I had 2 ring slings, 4 mei tais, one pouch (for water), 6 wraps...I think

Ring slings best for ups and downs.
Pouches easier for young babies and shorter journeys for older children.

Wraps are super comfortable and best for long walks etc, take a while to get the hang of tieing, bad for taking child on and off outside in wet weather, unless you can tie very well. My favourite for a back carry.

Mei Tai, best all arounder, not as comfortable as a wrap but easy to use, quick to tie and untie.

There is a mei tai for sale on mumsnet atm...Kozys are fab carrier.

Else try www.thebabywearer.com

BabiesEverywhere · 15/09/2007 14:03

Kozy on Mumsnet

HTH

MrsBadger · 15/09/2007 14:04

bjorn type may shag your back, esp with heavy baby
but easy to get from mothercare this pm...

Tutter · 15/09/2007 14:05

wow

anyone ever mention the word addiction to you?

i like the look of the mei tei

but have to be able to buy today/tomorrow

so, mothercare or john lewis really

OP posts:
BabiesEverywhere · 15/09/2007 14:05

Just adding that baby bjorn are very uncomfortable for bigger babies plus they are badly designed, as the baby is held up by their crotch.

There are much better soft structured carriers (SST) on the market if you want one.

Tutter · 15/09/2007 14:06

ooh mrsbee thou art a mind reader (x posts)

OP posts:
Tutter · 15/09/2007 14:06

ok then

so which of thse would you go for (assume they are all the same £)

OP posts:
Tutter · 15/09/2007 14:08

or these (john lewis)

BabiesEverywhere · 15/09/2007 14:08

Depending on where you are in the country, you might be able to rent or borrow one from a local sling group.

If you are near Bolton, I could lend you one to try ?

Tutter · 15/09/2007 14:08

ah, nowhere remotely near, unfortunately, but thanks

OP posts:
BabiesEverywhere · 15/09/2007 14:10

The only non crotch dangler is this pouch
www.mothercare.com/gp/product/B000ILDYPE/sr=1-7/qid=1189861713/ref=sr_1_7/026-1677279-1373267?ie=UTF 8&m=A2LBKNDJ2KZUGQ&n=44458031&mcb=core

What about making your own ? From bed sheet or a length of jersey/fleece ?

Tutter · 15/09/2007 14:12

i'd be uncomfortable making my own, tbh. scared that it would rip/break/come undone

convince me that they aren't darned uncomfortable in those premaxx type ones? looks awful! think i'd rather be supportd by my crotch

OP posts:
BabiesEverywhere · 15/09/2007 14:12

Rent from Lucy, give her a call...she might get one in the post today
www.rumplebums.co.uk/acatalog/Try_A_Sling_.html

or this site
www.slinginghappy.co.uk/index_files/Page319.html

Or post on here in your area, many groups have sling library for borrowing or members will lend out their own to local mums.

BabiesEverywhere · 15/09/2007 14:16

I have not used any of the mainstream carriers so I have no idea how comfortable they are, none of them look good tbh.

No sew wrap
