Tricotti sling - any good?

So as far as I can tell it is basically 2 pouches, one on each shoulder? Is that right?
I used a ring sling for DD but could only wear her in it for a short time as my shoulders are not at their best, I find it much comfier with her in a wrap or mei tai so I am using both shoulders but I want a pouch type carrier for the new baby so I can BF easier (I never got the hang of BFing in a mei tai!)

Has anyone got one? are they any good? and can you use them in 2 bits if you want?!

Haven't used one, but have seen one used. Yes, two separate lengths of material. Don't know that they would be very safe if used independently. I had a Tricotti Slen, which is basically a great bit length of material that you wrap around and around and around until you explode with irritation. Never could get the hang of BFing in it.

I don't own a tricotti sling but I know a mum that does. She carried on slinging her DD till she was about 2 and is now onto her 2nd DD. I always fancied owning one as I think they look really comfortable - both mum and DDs.
I think its great, but judging by that mum's feeedback, the only 2 reservations I have are -
a. not adjustable - so you have to be ever so precise with the right size when ordering
b. can get really hot and sweaty during summer
Hope that helps.

Sorry, but your description of a wrap has made me snigger.
I do have a wrap that I use to carry DD on my back but I tried to put my friends baby in it once to show off and just got so tangled I gave up!
I wouldn't mind using it as 2 bits as it looks a hell of a lot easier than a wrap, I'm just curious as how it works as none of the sites say.

Meant to say - I'm thinking of getting one. But I've got a sarong ring sling already, but if that doesn't work out well for me, I'll be ordering my tricotti sling before you can say tricotti.

ProjectIcarus · 19/08/2007 20:22

I have one. I haven't used it all that much tbh. Mine is a medium and it is a bit big one me. I found it a wee bit too stretchy to use in two bits but that might have been due to it being too big.

(adds another thing to the get rid heap )

What height/size are you?

Aitch · 19/08/2007 20:23

instructions

it's great, enormously comfortable and i loved it but definitely for an autumn/winter/early spring usage. i melted in summer and stopped using it.

policywonk · 19/08/2007 20:24

I lost count of the number of times I stood in windy playgrounds with one end of the wrap lost under numerous folds of material, and turned around to find the other end trailing in a puddle, or some dog turd if I was lucky. All of this while DS2 roared at me. Got the darned thing onto Ebay toot sweet. (They hold their value pretty well, I'll say that for 'em. )

The Tricotti: first piece of material goes over left shoulder, across body, hangs underneath right armpit. Second piece goes vice versa. Baby is cradled within the folds. Sorry, this might not be very clear but can't think of a better way to explain it. It did look quite comfy, but all of the weight does go on the shoulders.

Aitch · 19/08/2007 20:25

i felt that the weight went on my back rather than shoulders, funnily enough.

Chirpygirl · 19/08/2007 20:26

greenday, that does help, I was going to order it from a site that will let me exchange as I am pg now and don't know my size properly, and the new baby is due in october, so I really wanted something for over winter....

Actually, DH will think that doesn't help as he doesn't think I need a new sling, but that's cos he is superstrong and can carry DD for ages in his amrs without a break

Chirpygirl · 19/08/2007 20:27

I'm a size 20 normally and am 5ft9, so I assume I need a 'bigmama' size?!

OP posts:
ProjectIcarus · 19/08/2007 20:31

I would be surprised if you did tbh. I am 5'8" a size 16 and a medium is too big.

I think i am quite short from neck to waist though and this does make a big difference.

Chirpygirl · 19/08/2007 20:33

Ooh, thanks for link, the next one should be big enough for the mei tai by summer so the heat thing should be okay, it looks pretty good TBH.
And good to know that you thought the weight was on your back as my back is fine.
Even if it is on both my shoulders evenly that will help as one of them is crap but the other is ok.

pw, that's why I got my lovely mei tai as the wrap was too fecking annoying, but then I found the straps of that 'dangle' in all sorts of things, and one day I got it caught in the car door...that was interesting to sort out

OP posts:
kiskidee · 19/08/2007 20:37

i wrap the straps of my mei tai once more around my waist so they don't dangle long. [small waist emotion]

Aitch · 19/08/2007 20:38

yes, i'd be prepared to try the large but send it back if necessary. i got the medium and brawny 6ft dh could wear it while dd was wee.

greenday · 19/08/2007 20:39

I was very impressed by the fact that the mum who owned the tricotti carried on slinging her DD at the age when the rest of us mum found our DCs too heavy and big for our other slings. She went about everywhere with it and it seemed so convinient not having to push a pram and having 2 hands free. It definitely served her well.

what a valiant DH. Bet he's secretly die for a sling in time though!

Aitch · 19/08/2007 20:42

oh and wrt the shoulders thing, i used to take the sling pieces over my shoulders completely, so it never felt like the baby was hanging round my neck or anything, more like my shoulders were getting a good stretch and the weight was right across my back.

ProjectIcarus · 19/08/2007 20:43

I have carried a two year old when 8 months pregnant in a cwtshi mei tai and a brightsparks peerie. Not at the same time of course

I think if you carry a lot you build up your muscles as well. I recently carried my three yr old in a ergo when she got whingy and I am definately out of practice. (dd2 not a pram refusnik lol). Still managed about half an hour though but she is only 15 kilos.

ProjectIcarus · 19/08/2007 20:44

Agree about shoulders of sling. Spreads the weight really well.

Chirpygirl · 19/08/2007 21:05

I can still carry DD in her mei tai and I am 7 months pregnant, and she's heavy!
DH is 'macho man' I have tried to put a sling on him numerous times but he always makes out it's too complicated and 'why not just carry her!'

Am a bit confusled which size to buy now! don't suppose you'd fancy letting me have a go on yours do you Project Icarus? I'd pay (obviously) but it might be easier to return to a 'nomral' person than an online shop.....

[cheeky beggar emoticon]

I got one and gave up on it very fast - the baby seems to get too hot and half the time I was worried she would suffocate. I now use it as a (very overpriced) couple of cot blankets.
