That's similar to the link I was looking, althoguh more products on your US/Canada lsit . However they have made the same products for a few years and it seems unlikely, from what they say elsewhere on the website, that all batches have been affected in the same way and it is only Dora etc bought since May 2007 with the lead paint problem. Interestingly none of this appears on the Trading Standards Recall page.

LIZS · 14/08/2007 18:55

oh iswym re:magnets . Will have to extract dd 's from her bedroom tongiht.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 14/08/2007 18:57

DD has the polly pocket House Of Style. Cost £30 and is the biggest heap of junk ever and is never played with. I am praying it gets recalled and I get £30 for it. It has magnets.

contentiouscat · 14/08/2007 19:03

The american site said the information only related to American consumers & to go to the site relative to your country. The UK site is crap and has no info at all on it - the helpline closed at 5.00.

I seem to remember that last time I e-mailed them they replied really quickly, although that was with regard to buying something rather than returning it! I would imagine they are going to be flooded with e-mails so its a shame they didnt sort their site out really!

I was on the other thread too - I have the tiny sarge bought as part of a set from Disney - it has no country of origin on it so I guess I will have to contact them.

nutcracker · 14/08/2007 19:11

Dd1 had one of the effected polly pocket products but threw the main part out a while ago. She does still have some of the dresses and ponytails with the magnets on though.

She is nearly 10 and i'm confident that she wouldn't put the magnets in her mouth as tbh she rarely plays with any of it, so have said she can keep them.

SlightlyMadSpider · 14/08/2007 19:37

Between them DTDs have at least 4 full play sets involved on the US site (an I can't imagine teh UK & US lists will actually be different) and 3 sets each containing about 4-6 outfits.

It is going to be a hassle if I have to send them all back and sort them all out....

sparklygothkat · 14/08/2007 22:19

dd2 has the Barbie and Tanner too, brought about 2 weeks ago, she loves it but is it affected??

SlightlyMadSpider · 14/08/2007 22:20

It is on the BBC list SGK....

LIZS · 14/08/2007 22:21

Hard to tell. Mattel would actually be doing themselves a favour by offering more detail instead of telling everyone to email or ring.

sparklygothkat · 14/08/2007 22:22

didn't know if it was before a certain date IYKWIM. Do I have to phone Mattel or just take it back to Toysrus, Dd2 is going to be gutted...

SlightlyMadSpider · 14/08/2007 22:22

SGK. On hte US Mattel website which is more thorough about what is affected and what is not it says the following...

"J9472 and J9560 Barbie® Doll and Tanner?
The affected part involved in this recall is the blue scooper with a magnet at the tip, which is used to pick up the plastic-coated
metal pellets (the pellets are not magnets).
Please examine the end of the blue scooper. If a silver metal tip is revealed your product is affected and you should return
your scooper to us for a replacement. If your scooper has a white plastic tip, you are not affected by this recall. If your scooper
is purple, you are not affected by this recall."

RubberDuck · 14/08/2007 22:24

Bear in mind that with the magnets it's not just an issue of something small being swallowed, but if TWO magnets get swallowed then they can click together in the intestines causing a blockage. This can cause severe illness (and in some extreme very sad cases, even death).

This is why they're recalling polly pockets with magnets, even if the other pieces are also very small.

SlightlyMadSpider · 14/08/2007 22:25

SGK it seems to be the basic design which is at fault. As far as I can tell if the magnet is exposed it is a problem. If it is concealed is is fine. It is not a batch problem but the newer designs are probably OK, and older ones a problem.

SlightlyMadSpider · 14/08/2007 22:26

RD...I understand that and am not disputing the recall.

BUT surely 2 small pieces could be swallowed intact and still stick together and cause a blockage or perforation?

sparklygothkat · 14/08/2007 22:27

am at Misdee's so can't check but have phoned DH and he said he will look.

SlightlyMadSpider · 14/08/2007 22:28

ACTUALLY DDs have a number of products called "Braidies".

They are doll like things that can be worn in you hair like braides and have magnetic bits to hold them to other accessories.

We have had a serious problem with the magnets coming away (more so than withthe PPs). I wonder if they will be recalled by their manufacturer?

RubberDuck · 14/08/2007 22:29

I think that 2 small pieces are less likely to stick together unless they are magnetic.

Of course, small sharp bits falling off will be a problem too and can cause damage, but being magnetic adds an additional hazard - just something to factor in when deciding if it's worth returning it.

SlightlyMadSpider · 14/08/2007 22:31

I am referring to small pieces which have a magnet within them.

Hulababy · 14/08/2007 22:38

We have the PP limoscene set. Have emailed and await reply as to what I am supposed to do next.

RubberDuck · 14/08/2007 22:38

Ah right... sorry

LIZS · 15/08/2007 09:00

I'm still confused - for example I've seen the Snow Cool hotel set in a sale (might have been Argos)recently and it is still showing in Amazon etc. Should n't all potentially affected sets have been withdrawn from sale for the timebeing. Noone can know how old the stock in their stores is without a full stocktake, it isn't sold in strict rotation of delivery ? Also with an offical recall it is required that ads are taken out in places like retailers and national newspapers giving details of products affected and the action consumers should take but I have yet to see any for this one - are Mattel instead relying on the media to do their job and save their budget

bagpuss · 15/08/2007 09:09

Liz, I am rather annoyed about this actually. I feel very let down for dd - she wants her Polly Pocket stuff (about £50 worth) and I have no idea if we will get a replacement or refund. I have e-mailed mattel along with the masses and am awaiting a response but it doesn't look like it will be anytime soon if they cannot even get their website right.

MimieD · 15/08/2007 09:47

For all those people who do not want to get rid of their PP toys as kids are older; you might want to re-consider after reading this
