Grobags...anyone NOT use them?
Spod · 21/09/2004 21:54
I am wondering if my dd is irritated by her grobag at night...could it be making her more uncomfotable because she finds it difficult to shift about in a find a comfy sleep position? She's 11 months and is in a 6-18month one... (which she loves and calls it her 'stars' cos it has stars on... obviously). What do you reckon... and what would i use instead...blankets pointless. tia.
zebra · 21/09/2004 21:56
Yup, we hate 'em.. well, my babies do. Fuss wildly about not being able to roll over, move around. Found it easier just to put several baby gros on them and turn the heating on in their room for half an hour around 4am to keep the chill off. Around 2.5yo they can manage to keep a duvet on themselves (usually) at night.
Good luck...
lalaa · 21/09/2004 22:04
I don't now since my dd learnt how to stick her legs straight in the air and undo it. (She's 23 months now though!) She thinks it's most amusing.
I also know someone who has never used them and her dd doesn't have any covers, just wears pyjamas.
I use a thin quilt and blankets, and I go and check on dd before I go to bed to make sure she's covered up. When your dd gets to 12 months you could use a quilt....

I used a fleecy sleepsuit over a cotton one on my 2 ( more mobile than a grobag)
pabla · 21/09/2004 22:08
As an alternative (when grobag in wash) I have used a fleecy all in one over pyjamas/sleepsuit wih blankets.
lou33 · 21/09/2004 22:09
Never used one either. My youngest two like to have their legs free from restriction, and are always trying to kick the duvet off. They have always been happier that way since newborns.
poppyseed · 21/09/2004 22:13
Never used them with DD but tried them with DS and found them to be a pain in the a**e. They got trapped up in his legs when he turned over and woke up. I use vest, grow and fleecey grow in layers, and if it's really cold I use the duvet grabbers that you can buy from Great Little Trading to hold on his cot blanket. Result=Happy baby
KangaMummy · 21/09/2004 22:22
We have never used them thought they were too restrictive but I know loads of people swear by them so I guess it is up to what works for your kids.
tex111 · 21/09/2004 22:45
I never used them because I thought it would be too retrictive. DS has always moved around a lot in his sleep. A friend told me a horrible story about her son vomiting while wearing his grobag and being unable to turn over which put me right off of them.
Don't want to highjack the thread but where do you guys buy the fleecey sleepsuits? I'd love one for DS but can't seem to find them anywhere.
hana · 21/09/2004 22:48
have never used grobags. Think they were just getting 'mainstream' when dd was about 1?? In the winter she wore a vest plus fleecy pj's with feet - has always kicked covers off but it's never been a prob. Lighter cotton pj's when weather is cooler.
tex - you can get fleecy ones at mothercare and woolies, they do seem harder to find over here than back home! Most of dd's are from Canada. Maybe it's the weather!!
polly28 · 22/09/2004 01:27
have just ordered fleecy pjs from lands end for my two.www.landsend.co.uk
They are quite expensive but really good quality.
I got a good one from woolies last winter aswell
tassis · 22/09/2004 13:11
tex111 I've seen fleecy sleepsuits in both mothercare and M&S.
tex111 · 23/09/2004 08:55
Thanks, I'll look our for them. DS tends to kick his covers off now but I know he gets cold.
Flip · 23/09/2004 09:01
We use fleecy over suits as well in the winter months. I get mine from Woolworths Ladybird collection.
SoupDragon · 23/09/2004 09:18
Never used one, just let DSs sleep however they wanted - they never woke up through cold.
Spod · 23/09/2004 21:36
thanks ladies... have put dd in a vest and fleecy pj's (no feet on them though so socks too!, which she manages to get off in her sleep!!!). If it gets colder i'll put her in a cotton babygrow too.... and get pj's with feet! Just couldnt work out haow many layers she needs. Its such a shame cos she loved her 'stars' grobag... gets so excited shen she sees it! maybe I'll sew some on her pj's!
Sleepyheads · 29/09/2004 10:19
Hi-I hope this doesnt just come across as a blatant plug, but I noticed your conversation about finding suitable nightwear and thought I'd just let you know about Sleepyheads, a small nightwear company that I run. All the nightwear is made from 100% Cotton, and is what I call 'winter weight' fabric - so its really warm, very soft and snuggly but being 100% cotton, its fully breathable aswell. Thought it might be of some help. We do also sell grobags for those of you who do get on with them ! The website is www.sleepyheadsmailorder.co.uk, or if you'd like anymore info just post a note here and I promise I'll get back to you.
chimpie · 07/11/2004 23:31
This may sound stupid but do you put your babes in long sleeve long leg sleepsuits in grobags? or long sleeve no leg vests?
gingernut · 07/11/2004 23:47
Depends how warm the room is. Most of the time in winter, when the room was about 18C, I used sleepsuits (long-sleeved with legs) with vest underneath. Then if it was warmer I'd use a sleepsuit with no vest, or just a long-sleeved vest (no legs). I used to check on him to make sure he was at a comfortable temperature.
HTH.
linnet · 07/11/2004 23:55
Grobags weren't around when my dd1 was a baby. But I've got one for dd2. In the summer I just put her in a sleepsuit with no vest underneath and she was fine like that. The past few weeks I've been putting her vest on with her sleepsuit, our house can get quite cold in the night and she was waking because she was cold.
chimpie · 07/11/2004 23:55
Thanks, I feel like I dress dd according to how I would like to feel so I would like bare feet in bed, most of my friends have their babes dressed in 75 layers and make me feel like I dress dd in too few, she always feels warm at the back of her neck so she must be ok, I know babies have thinner skin but surely they hate being wrapped up till they sweat?
gingernut · 08/11/2004 00:15
On the grobag thermometers they do give some guidance as to what clothing to use, and they suggest a vest and PJ top if the room is 18C, i.e. nothing on the feet. I only used sleepsuits because we didn't have any PJs and he seemed fine with that. I agree, most people seem to wrap their babies up a lot. Our ds was a very toasty baby and tended to get overheated if anything. As long as you're happy she's at a comfortable temperature then that sounds fine to me.
