Overwhelmed by choice of coffee machines 2019

Hi, I’ve started this thread as the only other one I came across was from 2014.

We are currently looking at getting DH a coffee maker for his birthday. Having read which etc. He feels a pod machine would be better suited in the short to medium term as we have a 4 YO and another due tomorrow! When they’re older and we look at getting the kitchen done I think we’d want a bean to cup machine, but for now it needs to be simple to use, clean and be able to froth milk.

He is veering towards nespresso and we can recycle the pods via the post.

Anyone got any feedback on nespresso machines or other pod system? There are so many with little variations and some have mixed reviews, so any additional info is appreciated.

Budget is around £200.

Thanks.

I got a nespresso Vertuo machine for my office at work. After it arrived in realised that the vertuo pods are massive and you can only use them in the machine. You can't use supermarket ones.

We order the pods direct from Nespresso and they do next day delivery. The coffee is amazing for machine coffee, everyone who tries it says it's really good. You get the crema on the top and they make lots of different strengths and some flavours. The flavoured ones are nice because they are not sweetened.

It works out at about 40-50p a cup. All of us in the office agreed this was better than spending £2-3 per day on Costa coffee.

Aeropress for £25. Milk frother for £50. Makes the best coffee ever.

daphine2004 · 25/08/2019 08:29

Thank you. I hadn’t realised about the different sized pods. Is the crema the like frothy milk?

Delonghi dedica makes lovely coffee

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 25/08/2019 08:44

Don't spend that much on a pod machine. The way the pod business model works is that the machines are cheap to buy, then you're hooked in to regular purchases to buy the pods.

I love my coffee and have the following:

Bialetti Moka stove top pot - delicious but more time consuming, quite nice as a weekend ritual
V60 drip filter - so simple, so delicious; my current go-to
Aeropress - used this day in day out until I recently tried the V60
Nespresso pod machine - easy to use but I haven't used it for months

A bean to cup is on my wish list and I'm keeping an eye on prices.

What kind of coffee does he drink? I just drink black coffee so none of my methods involve frothing milk but you can buy separate milk frothers.

La Marzocco Linea Mini here... amazing italian machine, not pod based.

LifeOfBox · 25/08/2019 09:02

Lavazza make pod machines, great reviews and nice designs. I keep toying with buying one. I use a stovetop machine and cafetière after XH took our isomac machine and burr grinder with him when he left 😡.

These are currently half price with a discount code. But the new machine has a bit more functionality (Americano for instance). I am very tempted but not quite enough to have ordered one yet.

Lavazza coffee is much nicer than the other pod makers imo (maybe because I lived in Italy for a bit and survived on it).

LifeOfBox · 25/08/2019 09:14

Just to comment on cost of pods. I have done the sums and was surprised. Lavazza generally £4.40 for 16 = 28p each.

Bag of Lavazza espresso £4 ish and I use about 18g in my stovetop = 28p per espresso.

I used one in a holiday cottage recently and the convenience is a big attraction.

daphine2004 · 25/08/2019 09:54

@HobbyIsCodeForDogging love your username!

He likes espresso and lattes. I’d said £200 as that’s our birthday budget and thought we could get something nice with this, but we’d looked at all different kinds of machine before he decided yesterday that a pod system would be best given the need for ease.

I would love a bean to cup and built in would be preferable!

We do have a cafetière and a stove top one as he likes Turkish coffee too.

Thanks for the suggestions I’ll have a look at them. @LifeOfBox it’s all about the convenience. I think we live our lives through life hacks just to squeeze a few more hours out of a day!

We have a vertuo machine and the milk frother thing but we don’t use the frother now. We just heat the milk in the microwave then run the coffee in to it, quick stir and you have a latte with a thick foam layer on top.

LifeOfBox · 25/08/2019 10:03

Me too Daphne. My alarm goes off at 5:30 to feed walk the dog before I have a shower, get a reluctant to get up teenager out and about and get to work for 8am.

I have to drink my coffee while I walk the dog these days and think the convenience of a pod machine - vs all the other methods I have tried over the last few decades might just swing it for me! At £150 that new machine isn’t expensive imo and the coffee costs more or less the same.

The kit XH took with him cost £750, the lovely man 😎 took it with him and sold it on eBay for £120.

MrsPnut · 25/08/2019 10:09

Nespresso do a subscription, pay £1 for the machine and then pay £25 a month for 12 months which is credit in the nespresso store to buy capsules.
The credit lasts two years and the machine is yours.

We have a nespresso machine and aeroccino milk frother and absolutely love it. We hand our bag of used capsules back to the man when he delivers the new batch and we use the milk frother to make a beautiful base for hot chocolate as well as to make lattes.

Frannibananni · 25/08/2019 10:11

I've had a really good Italian machine I bought after having child one, a pod machine after child two ( easier ) and then a areopress after child three (quieter) now back to the good old French press as I lost a part for the areopress.

LifeOfBox · 25/08/2019 10:14

I use an aero press at work as I work in a very old building and the drains can’t cope with washing out a cafetière. It’s ok but I don’t absolutely love it.

My cafetière is a stainless insulated one and perfectly fine (can drink the second cup hot after my dog walk) but I still find myself tempted by the Lavazza pod machine. Definitely not a necessity!

cubesofjelly · 25/08/2019 10:27

I also recommend an Nespresso Vertuo. Years back we bought an original Nespresso machine and made very good use of it. Late last year we decided to replace it with the newer Vertuo model, as we liked the option for different lengths of coffee built into the machine (eg 230ml), rather than having to boil the kettle as well to make a longer coffee.

There are often some good deals around, so take a look. They’re often on some sort of sale, even if not they’ll regularly do deals like buy the machine and get £40/50 etc gift card which you can use to buy coffee.

We got the VertuoPlus, for a coffee machine it doesn’t take up too much room and you can move the water chamber around to fit your space. It’s currently discounted on Nespresso’s website. They’re easy to maintain, same reasoning as you we went for this for very low fuss, good coffee. We do really like it and stopped buying most coffees out or on the way to work, for instance, as it’s just very easy to make a nice one ourselves.

We did use an Aeroccino for a while but in the end we gave it away as it just wasn’t that great - it works fine, but like others have said actually it’s nice enough just warming some milk in the microwave! We drink coffee black more often than we used too, because the coffee is nice. And yes, we previously had all sorts - cafetière, moka pot, filter drip etc - still think our Nespresso has been the best of them all.

You get a sampler of different capsules with the machine, which helps you work out which ones you really like. We now know which ‘notes’ to go for when trying new blends, but of course you can also taste them in store if you have one you can visit.

I really don’t work for them Grin this sounds all a bit lovey for Nespresso, but just sharing our experience!

LifeOfBox · 25/08/2019 18:42

I wouldn’t want to be tied to Nestle. But that could just be me.

I have taken the plunge this afternoon and bought this OP.

Not a pod machine after all 🤷🏻‍♀️. Massively discounted at the DeLonghi eBay outlet as it is £586 at Amazon and £749 at CurrysPCW. Looks fairly automatic.

The description of manufacturer refurbished is interesting, hopefully I will get an overstock or damaged box machine!

daphine2004 · 25/08/2019 22:27

@LifeOfBox I hope your spur of the moment purchase wasn’t inspired by my thread?! 😅 the refurbished doesn’t sound bad at all. Think you’ll do well and it definitely looks like a good machine.

I actually had a look at their eBay shop as DH has been looking online ALL DAY. He likes the look of the Creatista Sage? and Lattissima Pro. Don’t think the pro was on there, but made me think about Facebook marketplace or the other eBay outlets if he decides what he wants. He is also costing up the subscription packages to see what might work best.

I’ve fed back from this thread which was really helpful, thank you all!

I’ve suggested he looks at a cheap one with a frother and see how he gets on of he is still struggling with deciding. I think it’s a bit like buying a car as it’s only on having it a little while you sort of wished it did X, Y and Z. You promise yourself that the next time you get a car it must have certain things that you realise are essential.

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 25/08/2019 23:02

@LifeOfBox what model did you go for? Can't get your first link to work unfortunately. It never occurred to me to look on eBay for manufacturer refurbished models so thanks for that!

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 25/08/2019 23:11

If you are really thinking of a bean to cup in future it’s worth doing the maths.

Pods are expensive in the long run and - however much nestle like to pretend otherwise - not good for the environment.

A cheap pod machine + say 2 years of pods is a big chunk of the cost of a bean to cup machine.

LifeOfBox · 26/08/2019 01:27

No Daphne 😂. I have been toying with it since my XH took our machine in March!

I bought this one Hobby. It was £256.50 on the DeLonghi eBay shop.

MadisonAvenue · 26/08/2019 01:32

We have a Nespresso and I buy Amazon’s compatible pods, they’re around £9 for 100 and we all like them.

IncrediblySadToo · 26/08/2019 01:59

A lifetime ago, I had a built in one that took a huge bag of coffee beans and ground then fresh for each cup and it was plumbed in for water too.

Life changed.

I now have a Phillips senseo and because the ‘pods’ are actually ‘pads’ (like tea bags!) it’s environmentally friendly as well as very easy to use!

At work we have an older model Nespresso

At various times I’ve used machines with the milk frothed like in the first picture but I’d never buy one like that. It’s just another component that needs washing and is a bit fiddly.

I much prefer the frothers like in the second picture.

But I just heat the milk in the microwave (well I did until that died, now I do it on the hob! Well actually doing Keto at the moment so just add cream🤣).

I like the Nespresso coffee- but even though they say they recycle the pods, I’d rather not use them in the first place. (But if you go that way, get one that takes the small
Pods as there’s much more variety to choose from!)

My friend has a Tassimo and they love it - in fact when the last one died they’d replaced it within a couple of hours!

I don’t like the pods of milk though, I only like it fresh.

I’m sticking with my Philips senseo for now, but when he dies I’m not sure what I’ll do as the range of coffee isn’t very good for him anymore 😢

I like the bean to cup as you’re not limited with the coffee you can use - but it’s not a one handed job to make as a pod machine is.

Good luck choosing!

I have the George Clooney coffee machine - it is a shame he didn't come with the machine.
