Overwhelmed by choice of coffee machines 2019

Hi, I’ve started this thread as the only other one I came across was from 2014.

We are currently looking at getting DH a coffee maker for his birthday. Having read which etc. He feels a pod machine would be better suited in the short to medium term as we have a 4 YO and another due tomorrow! When they’re older and we look at getting the kitchen done I think we’d want a bean to cup machine, but for now it needs to be simple to use, clean and be able to froth milk.

He is veering towards nespresso and we can recycle the pods via the post.

Anyone got any feedback on nespresso machines or other pod system? There are so many with little variations and some have mixed reviews, so any additional info is appreciated.

Budget is around £200.

Thanks.

Actually Hobby, I have just ordered this one, I will cancel the first order or return it if that isn’t possible.

After reading a ton more reviews I think the one without the milk thing is better for me as I prefer coffee with just a bit of hot milk rather than a milky coffee. The reviews say that the first machine doesn’t make long drinks. I downloaded the manual and it doesn’t look like it does. The second one was £206.99 on the eBay shop.

ChateauMyself · 26/08/2019 07:42

We used to have a bean to cup. I’ve now gone back to a drip filter machine.

So quiet. Multiple cups are so much easier.

Trial and error at the start to get the dose right for amount of water.

@LifeOfBox those are the sort of machines I have on my price watch 😍 I missed out on an amazing deal on Amazon Day so will check out eBay instead. Hope your new machine is everything you want!

daphine2004 · 26/08/2019 10:18

Thanks for all your advice and info.

@LifeOfBox good luck with your new machine - the one without the milk thing.

We are no further forward. I’m leaving it up to him as since being pregnant I’ve had an aversion to coffee. This happened with tea last time and I didn’t drink it for over four years, so not holding out much hope of being able to stomach coffee going forward.

I wonder if people actually pay the CurrysPCW price Hobby 😳. I wouldn’t. I did nearly buy a Sage machine on the Amazon sale day a couple of months ago and chickened out because it wasn’t as automatic as I wanted. My old Isomac machine made great coffee but I wanted something where I could push a button rather than fiddle about with espresso.

The one I bought said may have scratches on drip tray or something like that but there are spares galore here and a drip tray is about £6.

Think of all the money you will save Daphne 😂😂.

Good luck with everything with your baby on your due date today!🌸

daphine2004 · 26/08/2019 11:04

Thank you @LifeOfBox. Every cloud has a silver lining as it’s pointless going out for a cup of tea. Coffee is much more of a celebration - yay you’re awake, coffee!!

Just dropping in a vote for the Lavazza pod machines - the coffee is sooo much better than Nespresso - and I am very fussy about coffee. Next purchase will be bean to cup.

Obvs this is an opinion so Nespresso owners, don't all shout at me! Grin

Top marks to the DeLonghi eBay store who cancelled my first order when they read my eBay message this morning so I won’t have to go to the bother, or expense or sending it back.

My 13 year old keeps asking when it is arriving because ‘I drink lattes with my friends all the time Mum!’ Really, news to me 🤷🏻‍♀️. I won’t be encouraging her!

LifeOfBox · 30/08/2019 18:12

Hobby are you still on this? It’s here! Absolutely fine, it had made ten cups of coffee according to the stats. Looks completely new apart from the cup tray which is scratched but I have ordered a replacement. Bargain! I think it’s bigger than I imagined it to be but 🤷🏻‍♀️ oh well. Have used it successfully.

Makirocks23 · 30/08/2019 18:22

If you really want a pod machine, I hate the coffee made from them especially the ones with milk powder. I get my coffee from an ethical company who do pods that compost ravecoffee.co.uk/collections/nespresso-compatible-compostable-coffee-pods
Unfortunately nestle have no ethics!

Emus · 30/08/2019 18:31

I came on to say what @MrsPnut said - Nespresso do subscriptions ranging from £18 - £45 per month depending on which machine you want.

I use my machine at least twice a day and love it. Recycling the pods is a big bonus. I would stick to the original pods too.

Springcleanish · 30/08/2019 19:17

I have a Tassimo, Lavazza and a Nespresso (original line) , the coffee in Nespresso and Lavazza is very similar in quality, Tassimo more like good instant.

I only use original Nespresso pods, and it is my favourite as I can recycle them so easily. The Lavazza pods are all plastic and need to be emptied and cleaned to be recycled here so a faff.
I have a Latissmo Pro and love it, but the milk frother is a bit fiddly, and my old simple nespresso Inissia and aerochino was easier to keep clean and cheaper. If I could afford it I would get a Creatista.

LauraPalmersBodybag · 30/08/2019 19:33

Hi op, we decided against a pod one as I wasn’t into how much waste they create. I know you can buy reusable ones but they seemed to have pitfalls - how tightly you pack them, how fine the grind etc, and I decided it sounded like a bit of a pain.

My FIL sells kitchens, coffee makers etc. He did some thorough research and came up with this:

ao.com/product/ceg5311x-beko-bean-to-cup-coffee-machine-stainless-steel-69256-65.aspx?&WT.z_PT=SA&WT.z_AT=Bean%20To%20Cup&WT.z_MT=Search&WT.z_MAT=Beko&WT.z_FT=Free%20Standing&WT.z_PC=CEG5311X_SS&WT.srch=1&WT.z_KW=CEG5311X_SS&WT.z_DT=m&WT.z_RTM=PLA&ef_id=EAIaIQobChMI0aOH25yr5AIVA7TtCh0PlAtZEAQYAiABEgJDa_D_BwE:G:s&s_kwcid=AL!8149!3!289447681346!!!g!321138450145!&&WT.z_CN=SDA%20-%20Coffee%20Machines%20-%20Brand&WT.z_AG=SDA%20-%20Coffee%20Machines%20-%20Beko&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0aOH25yr5AIVA7TtCh0PlAtZEAQYAiABEgJDa_D_BwE

It’s bean to cup and was really well reviewed. Plus my FIL does useful things like checking the manufacturing location of the machine and knows who makes good ones, which ones are good quality in a cheaper ‘shell’ etc. Have a separate milk steamer which isn’t the most streamlined but it works well for us.

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 30/08/2019 19:33

@LifeOfBox brilliant news, so glad the machine is in such good condition and barely used. Thanks for the update :)

LifeOfBox · 30/08/2019 21:12

It’s fab Hobby 👍🏻, a great buy. Unbelievably (why you may well ask 🤣) there is a statistics button which revealed that it had made ten cups before it came to me!

daphine2004 · 04/09/2019 10:46

We, OH actually, finally made a decision. Like @Springcleanish we will be going for the Latissima Pro, we did look at the Creatista, but can’t justify the expense and didn’t want to froth the milk ourselves (I know first world problem!).

www.johnlewis.com/nespresso-en750-mb-lattissima-pro-by-de-longhi-silver/p1213143?sku=233176307&s_kwcid=2dx92700046625462209&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwb3rBRDrARIsALR3XeZCVUR_IakjoD_mfdwknFnxMEB2V_65uNZm0Wms2wGFIiBt9RKuZNQaAhEQEALw_

@Springcleanish you mentioned that that the milk frother was fiddly. How is it fiddly?

The more we looked at what was available, it became easier to know we wanted something as automated
as possible.

Thanks.

Springcleanish · 04/09/2019 11:17

A good choice! It is fiddly in that you need to take it all apart to wash after each use, I would prefer to just have a jug and wand.
Be wary of remembering to pull out the milk lever before you press go - it sounds so obvious, but it easier than I thought to forget!
Enjoy your coffee.

pooopypants · 04/09/2019 11:34

We use Nespresso and love it. Aldi, Lidl and Asda all do their own pods which fit (other supermarkets may do too but those are the ones I know). We moved from a Tassimo machine and it's a game changer.

We got a milk heater / frother with it but I warm the milk in the microwave instead now.

daphine2004 · 05/09/2019 08:16

@Springcleanish thanks for that!
