No idea really but is at tasteful to buy one of those little bangle type bracelets girls you to have when I was a child? Or a religious type toy like a Noah's Ark? Could you browse a religious bookshop for ideas? Told you I had no idea!

Lonelymum · 15/09/2004 20:03

Meant to say "girls used to have "

tassis · 15/09/2004 20:04

children's bible story book? silver bracelet? piggy bank?

acnebride · 15/09/2004 20:15

I was about to post about dedicating trees via the Woodland Trust, which I've always had great reactions for, but they seem to have stopped doing it. Luckily Future Forests do the same thing.

discordia · 15/09/2004 20:19

Go to a Christian bookshop and there'll be plenty of ideas. I would go for a Bible for little children which can be read aloud to your niece. Lion produce a nice one.

ladywallopofcod · 16/09/2004 08:03

thanks for all those ideas
they got ds3 a lion bible - I only wonderi fheir ds1 hasone already

my dd got some lovely presents when she was baptised.SOme that might be suitable are:

frames from spaceform.com they have lovely glass frames there.

royal doulton: my pal gave her a china bowl from a children's selection.

I also remember that I gave a friend a jemima duck musical statue(think I got it in John Lewis) don't think it was over £30.

Money boxes: again think it was Royal Doulton, they had them in the shape of a book with the rhyme for the day the child was born on ( Mondays child is..... etc)
hope this helps

mummytosteven · 16/09/2004 09:19

spode do some nice traditional (i.e. not disneyfied!) winnie the pooh children's crockey

fairyfly · 16/09/2004 09:32

If you want something particularly catholic how about Rosaries. You can get tradional ones, or a little bracelet. At this site you can have them custom made. So say you could use your nieces birth stone, or favourite colour etc. Or just design what you think is tasteful. Also you can get the back of the Crucifix engraved.
I still have mine from being baptised and treasure them.

CountessDracula · 16/09/2004 09:35

Are you at all crafty? The sweetest thing that dd got was from her grandparents combined. My dad found an antique child's chair for peanuts and restored it and MIL made a tapestry to upholster it with dd's name and DOB on it on the back and an A to Z with pictures on the seat. It really is a gorgeous thing and I'm sure dd will treasure it forever.

ladywallopofcod · 16/09/2004 09:48

hmm I am not catholic ff so the whole thing is rather bemusing! but will haev a good lok at that site. I wonder if I know what a tetelful rosary si ! ( as a c o fe vicars daughter!)

that is a good idea
am not crafty

fairyfly · 16/09/2004 09:53

A tasteful one in my opinion just looks like a bracelet and doesn't have a dobbing great crucifix hanging off it.

ladywallopofcod · 16/09/2004 09:53

Do oyu know I saw that and thought fab but I dont htink they weill stay whre they are forever unfort

CountessDracula · 16/09/2004 09:56

How about

Name a star
Adopt an animal at local zoo/wildlife park
something from tiffany

aloha · 16/09/2004 10:01

Small item of jewellery for later- charm bracelet? You can buy charms as she gets older. A case of wine (again, for later!). Or start a collection for when she is 21. Money or Premium Bonds. Silver photo frame for pic of her in her parents arms at the Christening to keep for life. Lovely edition of classic book? Or selection of same?

fairyfly · 16/09/2004 10:05

If you want to be talked about for years and give the priest a heart attack i reccomend these
Really tempted to take them along to a Baptism myself just to see my mothers face. Joy.

CountessDracula · 16/09/2004 10:06

ROFL FF!!

marialuisa · 16/09/2004 10:17

well a rosary HAS to have a crucifix but know what you mean about "tasteful". Coddy if you're not RC I'd get something secular like the clock you mentioned; Bibles etc. (even at kiddy level) have different editions for RC.

But my DD got the tackiest baptism present going-a statue of her name saint made out of lava and decorated in sparkly gilt! it has pride of place in our dining room.

fairyfly · 16/09/2004 10:19

I meant a tiny one, i know it has to have one, just not a dobber

soapbox · 16/09/2004 10:21

How about a really beautiful leather bound photograph album which her mum can fill with christening photos to keep for when she is older?
