I just had the little pulina one for dd's birthday party - where you pull the streamers off the bottom rather than hit it - they all loved it!I was thinking it would be v. v. easy to make with a cardboard box and some strong tissue paper.

Not sure it would break easily enough. Go with the papier mache. Or buy one.

see www.partypieces.co.uk. It's the Pulina one

JanH · 06/09/2004 10:26

I have paper lampshades with thin cane (?) bits inside instead of wire - that would work?

Blu · 06/09/2004 10:51

Go on holiday to mexico or brazil or wherever they come from, for two weeks, and bring one home. That sounds the best way to me.

JanH · 06/09/2004 10:58

Oh Blu, of course that's the ideal solution, I don't know why nobody else thought of it

lou33 · 06/09/2004 12:45

I saw pinatas for sale in asda a couple of weeks ago.

lou33 · 06/09/2004 12:46

They also sell them in Urchin.

slug · 06/09/2004 16:17

Buy a big balloon. Put stuff inside it and blow it up. Cover with paper mache. Pop balloon before paper has hardened completly. Paint and decorate.

My sister makes them this way and they're always fabulous.

Chandra · 06/09/2004 16:24

The original pinata that really breaked, did so because it was made of terracota covered with paper, but you don't want to do that, having a blindfolded children trying to hit something with a long stick is already dangerous

Ok I will ask.

What the hell is a pinata?

Chandra · 06/09/2004 16:37

according to the latest trends anything made out of paper with sweets inside that you hang high enough for a child to break it with a stick, originally for Xmas.

My pinata story.....when we were in la we went to my friend's ds's bday party where they had a pinata (very common at children's bday parties in la...large hispanic community)...The pinata was an effigy of spiderman. Everyone happily whacked the thing with all their might. When it was my ds's turn he held the stick and looked at me. I tried to help him hit it (he was quite a bit younger than all the other kids). He burst into tears and said "mummy, but I don't want to hit spiderman."
