Our telly has blown up! Dh is delighted as he thinks he won't have to suffer Big Brother. I have other plans. Can anyone recommend a nice new telly for Enid?

I know nothing about tvs. Our is/was a Sony, not flat screen, 28".

Spose I'll have to get a flat screen. What's the best make then?

get something like this

LCD, Freeview and HD ready

Spidermama · 22/05/2007 22:39

I bought a lovely big telly from ebay because it was quite pretty and only cost £86. When I got it home imagine my surprise to discover channels I'd never seen before. CBeebies, UK TV History, E4 and the like. So many I had no idea TV could be like this.

It hasn't increased my viewing, but the kids watch it more I must confess. So be warned.

If you don't mind not bothering with HD and all that, you can pick up a bargain second hand as everyone's in a rush to get onto the next thing.

iota we dont have cable (isnt freeview cable?)

we have sky atm (rural area, satellite dependent)

dont care about HD

would quite like a little flat screen as it will take up less space in small sitting room

iota · 22/05/2007 22:42

we have Freeview via an aerial, not cable.

Enid · 22/05/2007 22:43

ahhhhhhhhhhh

ok

now am even more confused

SenseiAitch · 22/05/2007 22:44

freeview isn't cable. it comes out of the sky...
but you can get a box in asda for £25.

WendyWeber · 22/05/2007 22:47

We have a little flat screen, 24", it was much more expensive than even a 28" and I've now decided 28 is actually quite a good size for a flatscreen (but my cousin has a 32 and her DH can watch it was he walks back to the house from the car parked 50 yards away )

If you're happy with sky then just carry on, but if you have a good signal to your aerial you can buy a cheapie freeview box separately, plug it in and pay no subs

Enid · 22/05/2007 22:48

no we have a shitty shite signal

hence being in thrall to sky

WendyWeber · 22/05/2007 22:49

Ohhh, just realised you mean one of those really little flat screens, LCD or plasma? (our TV is still huge)

WendyWeber · 22/05/2007 22:50

Same here - we have our aerial on a sodding great pole on a gable end, interfering with flight paths probably.

How much do you want to spend?

Enid · 22/05/2007 22:51

no I think we will get a 28"

our telly atm is 26" apparently and the flatscreens are smaller?

Oh i think I will go to local leccy shop in town and get them to sell me something (prob totally overpriced)

OP posts:
iota · 22/05/2007 22:51

sWW -the freeview box is built into the Sony TV - no need for a separate box

iota · 22/05/2007 22:52

you can get a good TV a lot cheaper on the internet rather than in a shop

sykes · 22/05/2007 22:53

I don't think the size of your screen impacts on your tv? We live in revoltingly unrural surrey and as we don't do Sky we can't have a free box or something. But we still have a flat tv.

Enid · 22/05/2007 22:55

i know it would be cheaper on internet

but they are lovely independednt company

they have stuff in stock, deliver the next day, take away your old stuff and install the new stuff

and I can just pop in and berate mr marsh if it goes wrong

OP posts:
sammac · 22/05/2007 22:55

Apparently the Sony Bravia is the best one around, so the guy in John Lewis said. Go for LCD not plasma, so the guy in JL.......Watch out as some of them do not include the actual stand and it will not worj without it so is a hidden cost, so the guy etc meant that the sony one worked out cheaper than some of the cheaper ones iyswim.

SenseiAitch · 22/05/2007 22:56

do you have a digital aerrial, enid? they only cost about a hundred quid and make a Big Difference. ask Mr marsh what he thinks.

WendyWeber · 22/05/2007 22:58

LCD TVs 20"-24"

widescreen TVs 25"-29"

Ordinary widescreens are v v cheap now but, as I said, huge

Enid · 22/05/2007 22:58

ok now Mr Enid wants a new whizzy tv

have decided in fact I can make do with portable in bedroom and kids can watch dvds on pc

but he is now having none of it

off to bed xx

We bought ours from the shop in town too, also a video; bought DVD player off t'interweb because we wanted multi-region and they aren't allowed to sell them, but they still came and installed the lot for us - sweet .

Enid · 23/05/2007 09:17

we need a dvd too - didnt know that about multi-region - deffo want one of these so that dh can bring back dvds from china and the US.

I need a new kettle too so hopefully they can do me a deal

OP posts:
SofiaAmes · 23/05/2007 09:28

Trick with dvd players is to get the cheap brands (not panasonic) and then get the "crack" off the internet to turn it into multi-region. Go to ASDA, see what they have on sale, go to internet, make sure you can find a crack for it and then go to ASDA and buy dvd player.
Make sure you get tv with built in tuner and then you can get HD channels right out of the air for free. Once you have seen them you won't want to go back.

Enid · 23/05/2007 09:31
