Stop me before I spend £46 on a Boden coat for dd!

I don't want to do it! But its waterproof (although showerproof would do), plain (no logos - bliss) but brightly coloured and fleece-lined! It could just be the perfect walking to school coat! Can anyone recommend another (pref. on-line) company where I can get a similar coat?

I bought this coat last year too, would recommend getting a bigger size as they look lovely big too. We found it fab - really cosy and very rain proof, my dd had the duffle coat too for freezing days which was lovely too. Go for it!!

Ellaroo · 12/08/2004 20:22

Enid - you must buy it! A coat is something that will be worn EVERYDAY unlike any other item of clothing and so must be perfect. Imagine wrapping her up to go out each day in second best - it would be heartbreaking for you (I doubt she would care at all!) to know that the perfect garment was out there being worn by someone else's dd!!!! Anyway, my trick for justifying buying my For All Mankind jeans (£145!!! Don't judge me, I know that is an obscene price but they were my post-birth treat, I'm only putting this in to reassure Enid that if she goes for it there's someone out there with an even guiltier conscience than hers!) is to divide the price by the amount of times the garment will be worn throughout the year - this gives you a price-per-wear figure, which for a coat should end up being quite reasonable.

However, just to confuse you further, Jo Jo Maman Bebe have wonderful fleecy coats that the water and snow just seems to fall off/sit on the top of. My daughter has had Jo Jo's Polartec coats and snowsuits since she was born and they are fabulous. I think they are around £30 and for the pink-obsessed come in either fuschia and also a lovely baby pink with a lovely baby blue zip and piping....heaven!

p.s....

if you decide not to buy it console yourself with the following:

A) Johnny Boden tends to give the most tantilizing descriptions of the clothes - could you be being seduced by this rather than the actual garment.
B) A good friend wrote to Boden with some suggestions for making it even more wonderful than it already is. Bizarrely, in return she got a rather suspect signed photograph of what we think may be Johnny Boden himself!!! The photo is of someone who is really quite attractive and it is accompanied by his signiture - but surely no-one could be that vain - perhaps he has confused himself with a filmstar???? - do you really want your dd walking around in a madman's coat?????

(however, I am still intending to place a boden order myself once I have got final approval from dh, so don't let the above put you off too much). x

have been having the same dilemma Enid, as I haven't seen anything else I like (allergic to writing on clothes, fur lined hoods, etc etc). But am trying to decide whether it's fair to buy it in navy with red lining for dd (4.5) therefore meaning it would be cheap in a cost per wear way as it would be passed on to ds next winter. She wouldn't mind at all, being fairly unbothered about that sort of thing but have visions of her in therapy in 20 years sobbing over her lack of girly clothing and not being accepted by her peers . Am I insane? And can you get gymboree online btw?

golds · 12/08/2004 22:14

Go for it, I'm quite tempted myself, like the duffle coat too, oh no, youve got me started now

Skara · 13/08/2004 00:31

oops, bought coat and several other things so am now skint but hurrah for the mumsnet discount

marialuisa · 13/08/2004 09:24

Yes skara you can get gymboree online. Extra 20% off at the moment, but proper winter coats not in yet.

fairydust · 13/08/2004 12:13

oh my god forget the waterproof coat i want the duffel coat for dd from boden

enid · 13/08/2004 12:22

still can't decide...but haven't found a viable alternative yet. Dh hit the roof when he heard the price...but I think he thinks I should be making all my own clothes for them anyway

OP posts:
Twinkie · 13/08/2004 12:24

Yep agree fairydust - I would spend that little extra and get the duffle too!!

clairabelle · 13/08/2004 12:32

I have just ordered that duffle for dd. It is to die for If anyone is interested I am going to put her duffle from last year Boden pink one on ebay. V good condition 3-4.

honeybunny · 13/08/2004 12:59

enid-just remind dh how much he spends on a shirt or sky tv for a month. This is £41.40 on something that will keep dd1 warm and dry for 2yrs, and then provide another 2yrs for dd2. I still say cheap at the price!

Blu · 13/08/2004 13:18

Oh Enid - just buy it! All your arguments are sound...and by the end of the winter you won't feel any different financially for having splashed out. The mud/sponging argument is a clincher for me!

WideWebWitch · 14/08/2004 11:06

Erm, I'm not mad keen on it either. Enid, buy it if it really is what you want though. Have you looked at Muddypuddles stuff? It's not pink though, I'll grant you but I quite like the red one and it's only 20 quid.

frogs · 14/08/2004 19:50

Additional help needed to stop me spending 45 Euros a go on kitting out my three little pixies in these .

juniper68 · 14/08/2004 20:33

Sorry frogs but I'd do it. JAKO-O stuff is fantastic. My two wore their outfits whilst on holiday and got loads of comments. Plus I think they're good value.

juniper68 · 14/08/2004 20:33

Oh BTW they're beautiful sweaters

juniper68 · 14/08/2004 20:34

So u did it then enid?

enid · 05/09/2004 08:41

I'm in an updating mood...still havent bought it - am now totally skint as a company I was freelancing for has gone bust and its unlikely I'll get paid (£1,800!!) so Boden coats are a thing of the past for a while!

Enid, woolworths have gorgeous afghan coats at half price, so 15 quid, in their sale. Not v practical but warm and lovely to look at. They have hoods.
