I'm thinking of getting one for DH for father's day. I was looking at HAlfords and they have a variety of tomtom and navman.

Any thoughts/experience most welcome.

Also, do you have to subscribe to a service, like you do for a mobile phone?

Hi Ele, dh has just bought me one for the car. It is a Navman and so far so good. Easy to use and you only have to subscribe if you want traffic reports to avoid sbarl ups etc. One problem and I don't know if this is for all sat navs is that it occasionally tries to send you down one ways or blocked/closed roads, so you have it ignore it for a fair distance until it recalculates a new route from your position.

NoodleStroodle · 16/05/2007 14:19

Tomtom - v good, easy to use and so far hasn't directed me off top of cliff or onto a railway line

ComeOVeneer · 16/05/2007 14:19

That should read "snarl" ups .

Eleusis · 16/05/2007 14:20

Mind if I ask what model so I can look it up?

We have Tom tom and it is great. We haven't subscribed for any extras as we just get traffic reports from the radio. If you wanted this you would need a bluetooth phone. I highly recommend the TomTom. Idiot proof.

Eleusis · 16/05/2007 14:21

Hi Skyler. It's been ages. How are you?

OP posts:
Skyler · 16/05/2007 14:21

We have the 500 I think.

ComeOVeneer · 16/05/2007 14:22

Tis a navman F series, the brochure is in the car and it is raining, so will look when fetching dd from school. The man in halfords said to dh if all we needed it for was getting from A to B without getting lost we didn't need anything more fancy. (makes a change for a salesperson not to try and sell you the more expensive items)

Skyler · 16/05/2007 14:23

Hello
I forget it is you with your new name .
We are all great, hope you all well too.
The 500 we have does Europe in a little detail too and we are taking it to Spain and Portugal this year to visit Dh's Dad. We still need directions but this gives me a great sense of security that I can never truly get lost!

NoodleStroodle · 16/05/2007 14:23

Think 500 - and I have updated with speed cameras

ComeOVeneer · 16/05/2007 14:33

Oh yes, we have the speed camera thing too. TBH it is rather annoying with the high pitched "ping" to warn you of an immenent camers.

NoodleStroodle · 16/05/2007 14:33

Less annoying than points though?

Eleusis · 16/05/2007 14:43

Found a tomtom go 510, but not 500. Is the Tomtom Go newer than the Tomtom One?

OP posts:
NoodleStroodle · 16/05/2007 14:43

Mine is Go 500 but that might have been updated

ComeOVeneer · 16/05/2007 14:43

Ah depends wether you are a good girl and never speed or not

NoodleStroodle · 16/05/2007 14:45

[battens down hatches for tirade against me from MNers who have never gone over the speed limit]

Bagpuss30 · 16/05/2007 14:46

We have a Tomtom One. Its ok for our very basic needs although it did get rather confused when we went to Cadbury World last year and sent us down a side road full of terraced houses .

snugglebumnappies · 16/05/2007 14:46

have a tomtom one, it's easy to use and update but i have had four so far as they keep boody braking

ComeOVeneer · 16/05/2007 14:47

Don't worry the pedants will probably be after me for "never..or not"

Eleusis · 16/05/2007 14:55

What, COV? You mean you drive the speed limit??? I'm very dissapointed in you.

OP posts:
justaphase · 16/05/2007 14:56

The Thomson One is the new one. Have it and love it.

I recommend the Europe one - it works out a lot cheape than having to buy even one extra map.

Eleusis · 16/05/2007 15:32

Thompson One? Is that a typo or something dofferent from Tomtom One?

OP posts:
Skyler · 16/05/2007 15:36

The Go510 is the updated version of the Go500 I believe.
The Tomtom One is the very basic model I think (unless it is the one for motorbikes??)
We went for the one with Europe as I felt we would use it on hols to France and trips to see Dh's dad. The 700/710 is even more detailed but wasn't worth the extra money for us. I think the 300/310 is a good one but the offers they had on in Halfords meant the 500 was only £20 more than the 300, so worth upgrading for us at that price.

Skyler · 16/05/2007 15:40

I am out of date here. I have just looked at the Halfords page and they now have two versions of the TomTom One, regional or international [confused emoticon], so I withdraw and just say I think TomTom is the best one

justaphase · 16/05/2007 17:11

Sorry, Tomtom One

Thomson is the company that is trying to buy Reuters which I was just reading about
