Please! Im looking for a family car, but I will doing a 2 hr commute to uni every day in sept, initialy looking at a picasso, now Im just wondering if I can get anything that'll be cheaper on petrol and will go more miles to the gallon, but still have 5 doors as I have 2 boys....

What have you got?

Zafira 2 litre diesel - a tankful costs about £50 and does about 500 miles.

New Zafiras have a 1.9 diesel engine, I don't know if that uses less though.

Busybean · 07/05/2007 13:49

Oh, I like the zafira, what sort of price can you pick them up at a dealers do you know?

OP posts:
Tutter · 07/05/2007 13:49

er, don't buy mine (2.0l, £56, not very far )

WendyWeber · 07/05/2007 13:50

Are you looking for new or used, Bb?

WendyWeber · 07/05/2007 13:55

Under £14000 for a new one here

Busybean · 07/05/2007 13:56

Used really, dont like the idea of spending loads on a new car, then it depriciating in value as soon as I drive it off the forecourt.
My father died earlier in the year, so it'll be some of the inheritance money I spend on it soI want to be sensible in my choice and practicle as I will be driving 100miles a day to uni and back, so 200 miles a day.

does diesel usually do more to the gallon than petrol? is diesel more expensive?

OP posts:
WendyWeber · 07/05/2007 14:00

£10 - 12K for a newish low-mileage one.

MuffinMclay · 07/05/2007 14:01

Diesel is usually more economical if you have a high mileage (and sounds like you will). I'm sure I read somewhere that if you do over 10,000 miles per annum then diesel works out cheaper than petrol.

Nemo2007 · 07/05/2007 14:03

we are picking up a 3yr old zafira on thursday that was £5200 and is immaculate. 1.8 petrol engine

WendyWeber · 07/05/2007 14:03

In bigger cars diesel is much more economical and the more miles you do the better value it is. (It's generally 3p-4p a litre more than petrol)

Also diesel engines will happily do a lot more miles in a lifetime than petrol ones - you're looking at 1,000 miles a week on your uni trip so that's important too.

Busybean · 07/05/2007 14:05

nemo, wow, thats sounds like a bargain what mileage has that got?

OP posts:
WendyWeber · 07/05/2007 14:07

c 3-yr-old, low mileage, £8-9K

Nemo2007 · 07/05/2007 14:08

27000 the garage actually had 4 immaculate zafiras with really low mileage between 4500 and 6500

WendyWeber · 07/05/2007 14:08

Bear in mind you will spend probably 50% more on fuel with a petrol car...

motherinferior · 07/05/2007 14:10

No idea. It's red. Oh yes, I know, it's a Mini Cooper, very fetching, two stripes down its nose.

Nemo2007 · 07/05/2007 14:10

will say they advertised at 5800 but we got it down to 5200 and also got him to do 3mths part and labour and 6mths tax and 12mths mot..pmsl

Busybean · 07/05/2007 14:12

WendyWeber -so diesel will be cheaper? Im confused!

OP posts:
WendyWeber · 07/05/2007 14:18

The diesel car will do 45-50mpg, the petrol one 30-35mpg, so you will be buying a lot more of it

Busybean · 07/05/2007 14:23

ok, I see. Sorry for my ignorance, it'll be my first car you see!
So will a smaller engine size= more miles to the gallon?
Im starting to think that maybe dp could get a larger family car, that he could drive to wrk and we could use for family days out, then I could get a small 5 door, that would still be practicle with kids, but small and economical.....

OP posts:
WendyWeber · 07/05/2007 14:45

That would be a great idea if you can manage it.

Have a look at Fiat Panda Multijet - it's very highly rated in all the motoring reviews (except by Big Jezza I expect ) and a really cute and cool car! And 65mpg. What more could you ask for?

sniff · 07/05/2007 14:45

smaller engine = les petrol less insurance & less road tax

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 07/05/2007 15:01

4.5 litre Range Rover. £60 to fill up. Gets me to the end of the drive.

Actually that's a normal week of school runs, feeding animals, moving animals

CarGirl · 07/05/2007 15:05

I had a fiat sceicento which was had a 25 litre tank (so less than £25 to fill) and I could do 280 miles on a long journey!!!!!! You need to look at light cars perhaps a punto or something???

Automatic espace 2.2 petrol engine more than £60 to fill and only does 300 miles!

Ivor · 07/05/2007 15:07

Oh Duchess, your my kind a lady
I have a silly big truck, I'll not put the stats down as I've misplaced my tin hat and I don't think the OP is looking for an F150.
