will the weight of the car make a difference then? I guess heavier car=takes the engine more power=costs more in fuel?

Panda looks good!

The price on that link I posted below is fantastic - a used one here is over £7500

QueenofBleach · 07/05/2007 15:25

1.8 ford focus ghia diesle estate, £45 ish to fill up and somewhere between 450 and 500 miles.

NannyL · 07/05/2007 20:18

1.2 reanault clio

about £35 to fill up which will drive 375 - 420 miles depending how much is motorways / town driving etc

Enid · 07/05/2007 20:19

multipla 1.9 diesel
about £50 to fill up
does about 500 miles

mumfor1standfinaltime · 07/05/2007 20:31

Don't get mine.
I have a 1.8 Nissan 200sx turbo with 2 doors.
Not practical at all! We are debating changing it, but we haven't yet.

Tried to fill tank once, I got to £55 and daren't go any further. Don't use it to commute to work, we both walk to work as live close to city, but still spend around £150-200 a month on petrol sometimes and spending £65 a month on insurance.
Have been wondering if a brand new car would work out the same regards to monthly payments, lol!

cornetjo · 07/05/2007 21:47

We have a Citroen Berlingo which has a 1.8l engine, costs about £43 to fill with diesel and we usually get about 500 miles out of it.

We are thinking of buying one of these to make our own fuel. It will be very economical then:

VW diesel Passat estate, don't know about engine size, but pretty powerful, kicks *rse when it comes to overtaking. About £65 to fill up. Usually about 800 miles a tank, but managed almost 900 miles once.

AlwaysWatchingCastawayAt2am · 08/05/2007 01:02

skoda, diesel, 1.9, £35 to fill, does 400 miles.

MrMariella · 08/05/2007 01:10

Sherman tank. £900 to fill up. Bit heavy on steering. No parking problems. Bit much for school run. Other dads get tank envy. Won't talk to me. Bastards.

kiskidee · 08/05/2007 02:02

1.9 golf TDI. (deisel version of the GTI) £47 to fill 420miles. I think the break horse power also influences mileage. it is 130bhp.

for a family car & motorway driving i would not go lower than a 1.4 engine as i had a 1.2 clio and it made me feel a bit vulnerable on the motorway and boy was it noisy at anything over 70 mph. [mechanical ignoramus though}

sibble · 08/05/2007 02:17

i had a daewoo matiz before i moved to nz. very cheap to run, great little nippy car for town i LOVED IT, but i wouldn't venture lightly onto the motorway with it, you have to put your foot flat onto the floor to get up to any speed

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 08/05/2007 10:30

for lonely MrMariella. Do the school dads talk to your wife though?

BikeBug · 08/05/2007 10:36

1 litre Toyota Yaris, £30 to fill up, does 300 miles on that. Use it for town driving and 45 minute commute to work, plus occasional trips over the pennines to see the parents. Lovely car, provided you never want to do more than 70mph ever, and don't like overtaking anything other than milkfloats

dh says disels are noisy bags of shit

(have people carrier atm and this is his opinion of it)

MrMariella · 08/05/2007 10:50

Im afraid dh has it wrong, olive. Diesels have become incredubly more refined in recent years >, and have become smooth, whilst not losing any of their robustness or economy....>!!!

hertsnessex · 08/05/2007 10:52

saab 93 tdi sport 1.9 around £50 to fill it, does around 400-500miles, depending on if its is long journeys or around town

Cx

oliveoil · 08/05/2007 10:53

well ours is a brand new one and is noisy

girls like sitting right at the back though and it means I can't hear them fighting

MrMariella · 08/05/2007 10:53

Duchess - she doesn't like driving the tank. Not enough mirrors.......
