Kia Piccanto or Honda Jazz?

gail734 · 12/02/2018 19:35

Quick, I’m about to lease one of these. Which one will I go for? They both have 1.3L engines. I’m limiting myself because I like an automatic, but I’m not a petrolhead - I just need a car to get to work. Any opinions? I had a Civic before and loved it. Is a Honda more respectable than a Kia?

Jazz owner here. Have owned 4 so far - first one when l was pregnant with DS14.

Current Jazz is 10 this year and I'll get another one once it starts costing me money to fix.

Toomanycats99 · 24/02/2018 17:34

Only just seen this but love my jazz. Inherited sisters which lasted until 13 years with no issues. Has the new one 2 years (was 3 years old when got it) don't care if they have old person image. They are reliable, loads of space and nice to drive!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 24/02/2018 17:41

I've got a Kia Picanto and previous car was also a Picanto. Honestly they are great little cars.

thegamblersmrs · 24/02/2018 19:31

@FancyThatFenceEdge yes I do know how to use the ventilation system and I have in fact read the manual but thanks for your tip!

I've never had a car where the warning light goes off so often, and as for the warning light now going on when it lost pressure and was flat the AA man seemed very surprised by this and ushered me to the garage.
They said it's a fault with the jazz. The light should have gone on at that point and shouldn't be going off as often as it is. Every time I check and hasn't lost psi.

thegamblersmrs · 24/02/2018 19:32

Oops forgot to say it's brand new, bought mid December.

"When my tyre was flat to the ground (I didn't realise as it was back tyre so didn't feel anything) the warning light didn't go off"

Sorry, but that AA man sounds like a tool. Tyre deflation warnings on most/all cars that have them do not activate if the tyre is flat as a pancake. There has to be air/pressure in the tyre for it to work.

Sensor fault? Possible. Software glitch? Possible. ECU update release needed? Possible.

As for the tyre deflation warnings, it could be something as a simple update. I have trawled through nearly every Honda possible (not the NSX!) and a software update cures it.

Your car is new/under warranty. Get supplying dealer to check all updates are done.

bigbootsj · 24/02/2018 22:08

Can I just say, my auto picanto had a gearbox fault, to repair/ replace it was upwards of £700 (minus labour may I add!!) but the jazz if it was to go wrong would be (£150!) It's a no brainer! My jazz, an automatic, has done over 140,000 and never had a single problem with it, its brilliant!

Any explanation?

thegamblersmrs · 25/02/2018 02:18

It's going in next week for them to take a look. It wasn't as flat as a pancake when I started driving, I checked them.

Sure the AA guy knew what he was talking about. Maybe I'm not articulating myself well enough.

Still only giving my opinion on how I'm finding my car in a nutshell I hate it.

SuperBeagle · 25/02/2018 02:34

My mum drives a "new" Honda (not Jazz) and I drive a "new" Kia (not Piccanto) and she's had far more issues with her car than I have had with mine.

Anecdotal, of course, and I'm aware of Honda's reputation for reliability, but I would choose a Kia over a Honda comparing our experiences. I would happily buy another Kia in the future.

SuperBeagle · 25/02/2018 02:35

Tyre warning light goes off twice a week but no change to tyre pressure. When my tyre was flat to the ground (I didn't realise as it was back tyre so didn't feel anything) the warning light didn't go off.

This is one of the issues my mum has had. Her car is only two years old too.

It shouldbe noted that tyre deflation warnings have nothing to do with reliability. Reliability is to do with the engine.

SInce you gave no info, we have no idea what "issues" your Mums mysterious unnamed Honda actually has Confused

thegamblersmrs · 25/02/2018 07:36

@SuperBeagle it's just bad luck isn't it, that's the reason I went with Honda too having had one for years and being so reliable. That said after I bought it (recommended by my father and my in laws) the in laws then said they heard of a lot more faults with the jazz that with the bigger cars.

The garage are very helpful and has 3 years warranty which is great.

Does Kia still do 7 year warranty?

reddington · 25/02/2018 08:09

What complete nonsense! Any fault with a car could be considered a reliability issue.

SuperBeagle · 25/02/2018 08:34

She has a 2015 Honda HRV, for clarification.

She's had issues with the handbrake, the headlights, and with the fixture (not sure of correct term) between the dash and windscreen. All of these have been repaired under warranty, which is fine, but for a $30k+ car, it shouldn't have had those problems in the first place.

Reliability is not exclusively to do with the engine, either. A car has reliability issues if any part of it can't be relied upon to work (obv).

thegame Yep, still has a 7 year warranty! Full size spare tyre, too, which is such a plus in a country like Australia.

FancyThatFenceEdge · 25/02/2018 08:53

Yes the new (Mexico built) HRVs have lots of issues. And is also precisely why the USA refused to have them and instead build their HRVs in-country instead.

Any fault with a car could be considered a reliability issue.

Not really no.

Heated door mirrors that wont heat up for example, has zero connection to reliability since you could still drive the car, unless its causing an electrical shortage which then doesnt allow the car to start. But thats another matter entirely.

Fact remains, if the engine doesnt allow you to drive, that is the biggest reliability issue. If its a defect like the inoperative heated mirrors, a car, as per design, will still be useable and thus its mechanical reliability hasnt been compromised. Very big difference.

But lets not get into semantics. We'd be here all day.

bigbootsj · 25/02/2018 09:47

Italian any explanation? Well the automatic gearbox for the KIA was more expensive than what the car was worth but if the Jazz needed to auto gearbox replacing it would have cost us £150. Different makes and models part vary in cost, that's it really. Maintenance is by far cheaper on the jazz than the pic*nto

TwitterQueen1 · 25/02/2018 10:00

Honda Jazz’s are driven by old people who need to take a new driving test! Harsh - and not true Melanie!

Boots are important to me - being able to get anything in is super useful and the Jazz's boot is great. I've had my car for 3 years now and find it great. Definitely would recommend it.

It's not my ideal car, but I bought it because I couldn't afford a sporty number, I use it for very short journeys only (I wfh) and I could easily get 3 DCs and dog in it.

blaaake · 25/02/2018 10:11

The jazz is very nice. Picanto is far too small, I drove one and it felt like a biscuit tin on wheels!

italiancortado · 25/02/2018 11:02

if the Jazz needed to auto gearbox replacing it would have cost us £150.

But the gearbox is more than £150?

CrystalTits · 25/02/2018 11:11

We adore our Jazz. No reliability issues with it, it’s very economical and the space is amazing - boot and magic seats mean we've carried wardrobes/straw bales x 3/ bikes etc in the back without any problem. Really recommend it over a rollerskate-on-wheels Picanto, the drive quality & comfort is completely different.
Ps not old either! 😀

bigbootsj · 25/02/2018 11:15

No Italian it isn't. We found one for £150.

italiancortado · 25/02/2018 11:24

No Italian it isn't. We found one for £150.

That's the point I was getting at. You personally found one, but generally people won't.

LaundryHepburn · 25/02/2018 11:29

Jazzy jazz and the magic seats. I bought a double bed and mattress from Ikea and got them both in. I'm on my second, they're great. And I'm not old...

bigbootsj · 25/02/2018 13:46

I'm not a car expert italian, why wouldnt anyone else be able to find one? There were loads around that price. Just do your research rather than paying a mechanic to fleece you. Its not too difficult
