Baby slings in hot weather - any advice?

Hi - looking forward to carrying our newborn in a sling after it arrives in June, but slightly worried about heatwave predicitions for the summer - has anyone had a problem with slings being too hot for babies when it's super hot? Any thoughts or advice on how to manage this?

Many thanks

I'm planning to use a cotton ring sling with my new one (due any minute) cos I think my baby bjorn might be a bit hot for both of us.

EllieKthePA · 29/04/2007 20:17

i've got a huggababy ring sling and ds2 (2 weeks) has got very hot in it over this weekend

nappyaddict · 29/04/2007 20:17

i used a hopp last summer and it was fine.

NoviceKnitter · 29/04/2007 20:19

Thinking of going for the Kari-Me... and maybe inventing a fantastic new clip on parosol type thing!

My Hugabub feels too hot, but have a fab Gypsymama bali baby breeze wrap (from the US) which is much cooler - I think the Ellaroo wrap is similar

Novice-You need to try to get hold of Loopymumsy. She had her DD2 last year at beginning of Jul and went to Singapore with her when she was 8 weeks old. She used a sling all the time but I can't remeber which one. She's tried almost every one on the market.

If you can't get hold of her then try this website bigmamaslings
They are really good at providing advice and they have a hire service.

I tried a kari me on recently and decided not to buy one cos I thought it would be too how. They are cotton jersey and feel like wearing a big jumper!

glamourbadger · 01/05/2007 14:01

I used a baby bjorn last summer and it did get v hot and sweaty. Lovely in winter though - like a bodywarmer

BouncyTigger · 01/05/2007 14:16

I was thinking of getting a kari-me too but as I'm due in 6 weeks and we're on holiday in Oz at Christmas am worrying about it being too hot.

Can anyone recommend a similar type of wrap but cooler. I liked the kari-me cos it's stretchy and you can put it on then pop the baby in.

Thanks

TooTicky · 01/05/2007 14:22

A cotton ring sling is good. I like Better Baby Slings
And a newborn is small enough to shelter inside the sling and travel naked - well, except for a nappy. And you can drape damp muslins over sling/baby if it is really hot.

amazonianwoman · 01/05/2007 20:46

The gauze type wraps are just as easy to put on as the Kari-me/hugabub imho, even though they aren't stretchy. In fact even DH thinks our gypsymama bali breeze is easier than the hugabub. And the stretchy ones start to sag after a while, esp with a heavier baby.

NoviceKnitter · 01/05/2007 22:47

Yeah, my concern with the Kari me is that it's like a big sweatshirt. Do the Gypsy Mama gauze ones distribute weight across your middle or just shoulders?

Hi again slingers. Just checked out the Ellaroo Amazonian. Looks good - does the wrap spread weight around waist? That's what's appealing about hte Kari Me - doesn't put everything onto the shoulders. Calin Bleu have a new gauze one coming out which looks good, though poss a bit shouldery for me (I've got puny rubbish shoulders!)

Thanks for all your helpful advice.

PS What Hopp was it nappy addict? Did a search and there seem to be a few out there...

NK, where did you find the Calin Bleu details? Am also on the look out for a sling/wrap which isnt too hot, but hard to know really...
getting bogged down by all the info out there

Hi Panacotta - I just googled Calin Bleu and they have their own website (sorry can't do links.) Think it's calinbleu.com

Bogged down is right. I've finally decided on buggy (icandy cherry) and now facing whole new can of worms with sling. There doesn't seem to be anywhere that does a big enough range that you can try and load on and see what works best for you.

The Calin Bleu cool gauze do look good - kind of like Kari Me but in gauzey fabric. They've only just come out.

Pannacotta · 03/05/2007 11:16

Thanks NK.
Found the site but emailed them and the wraps not out till end of May, my baby due on 12th May!
Feel bit like giving up, you're so right, no one website with all the info/advice needed which makes the research much harder...
Have you decided on one yet?

BouncyTigger · 03/05/2007 13:14

Ooh, the Calin Bleu gauze ones look good and I'm not due till 11th June, so think I'll order one as soon as they come out. Thanks NK

redtent · 03/05/2007 13:26

Can i recomend that people looking to be able to try on a range of slings see if they have a local sling meet group? quite a few of these groups have sling libraries and members with nice stashes themselves ;)

www.slingmeet.co.uk

IME a summer baby and a wrap will be hot whatever the wrap. Calin bleu or Ellaroo or Gypsymama gauze or stretchy would be cooler than most, a ot of people also rave about vantanai wraps for the summer too. If you google most of the brands you will find uk stockists... if not I'll keep my eyes on this thread and post them.

I do think I will find myself using my ring slin g the most in the heat. I have a solarveil one (special sun protection stuff) and some cool linen ones too.

As for information.. by far the biggest collection of information is at www.thebabywearer.com There are reviews and threads and you can search away and find opinions of mums who have tried things. beware tho... when you find slings that work for you... they are addictive ;)

Pannacotta · 03/05/2007 14:12

Thanks redtent, have looked but no sling meets near me - its quite unusual in Norfolk to see anything other than a Baby Bjorn...
Can I ask which ring slings you like? We had a Huggababy with DS but didnt like it, too bulky and didnt like the padding...

NoviceKnitter · 03/05/2007 14:28

Thanks Redtent - just checked out slingmeet and in London there's now a sling library which seems a very cool idea. My current thought is to get the Calin Bleu cool gauze as my baby's not due till June either and then maybe get a Kari-me or a wilkinet, or that ultra cute calin bleu fleece one with multicoloured spots, as a winter wardrobe option. But maybe gauze will do year round and I'm just turning into a sling fashion victim. Presumably though, in terms of changing around where you're having to bear weight, it's quite a good idea to have more than one sling (a bit like shoes?)

NoviceKnitter · 03/05/2007 14:38

PS Pannacotta maybe the Gypsy Mama or Ellaroo would be good for you as baby coming sooner? Or buy one off Ebay to tide you over and get a Calin Bleu later - won't get super hot before June probably anyway.

Also, check out www.sasaslings.co.uk. You can hire slings from them on a weekly basis which could be good to tide you over or for any of us to try before we buy....
