It has to be a chair and it has to be high... SO WHY IS IT SO HARD TO CHOOSE ONE???

Gaaah!

Help me, MN.

I need a high chair for master Kif.

Dd1 had an old Graco model (seems discontinued).

I liked very much that this chair had a very deep, wide, removable washable tray. I feel this is a 'must' - I get bored of spoon feeding and 'managing' her feeding very quickly. Dd1 - a la BLW - just got served this and that on her tray which she'd thin down with her drink and then slosh around the tray. I didn't need to stress about things making a big mess on the floor or spoiling everyone else's meal.

I didn't like how it was a hygiene hazard from first use, and seemed to require you to clean it with a toothbrush to get into the crevises and the daft 'armchair' stylee upholstered vinyl cushion. I look longingly at wooden styles like trip trap - thst can be used w/o a cushion, or with a changeable simple cushion - for what looks like 'wipe and go' cleaning.

I found the 'features' plain daft. Why oh why would I need my child to sleep in the reclined highchair? The blighter eats three meals a day every day - why do I need to fold the chair into a postage stamp? Height adjustment? It was really very big and quite ugly.

I feel like I've looked at every chair out there - and I'm depressed that my perfect chair (I'm imagining a trip trap but with a big deep plastic tray) doesn't exist . I really want to get this right, because I thunk he'll spend a lot of time in it watching me and Dd cook, do craft etc. Current best option is to fetch graco from my mum - but it's fourth hand already.... so I'd really rather save myself the drive and get a spanking new one. Would like it to be good for his back ove long use.

HEEELLLPPPP MEEE PLEAASSSEEE!!!!

I've said it before but you can't beat the Antilop from Ikea - dead easy to clean, completely toddler and mess proof. No gizmos with it and it fits them for ages.

It does not have the tray you yearn for but does pull right up to a table so my dcs didn't need a tray but were tucked up at the table and could intereact with all of us.

Rosa5 · 11/04/2007 07:54

peg perego prima pappa is a total bug**r to clean food gets stuck everywhere and you cant get at it unless you use a toothbrush.I wouldn't buy another. It does fold up pretty well and it is adjustable heights to use at the table without the tray.

DimpledThighs · 11/04/2007 07:57

there is one in ikea that is simple but that is the beauty of it. Metal frame that folds, comfy plastic chair in blue white or red and a snap on tray.

Asthetically I thought it ws quite funky (but not traditional) and it is easy to pack away for storage if need be.

pansypants · 11/04/2007 07:58

trip trap does a tray thingy now, loads on ebay, last time i looked

Jelley · 11/04/2007 08:02

You can get a tray for the antelop for an extra £3

I'm a bit iffy about whetrher ikea build quality is good enough for a safety product. The antilopp looks a mite flimsy... no?

trip trap plus plastic tablecloth on table works a treat for us...same as a tray i reckon (but bigger as is the table).

GooseyLoosey · 11/04/2007 08:52

Antilop not flimsy at all - I could have sat in it (and that is saying a great deal!). We gave ours to the pub over the road when we had finished with it and its still going strong!

MrsBadger · 11/04/2007 08:54

Ikea Antilop
you can get a tray for it
not flimsy at all (and psahw at a high chair being a 'safety' product)
they even deliver now.

Either that or get a Handysitt which takes up precisely 0 floor space though appreciate it has no tray.

Pannacotta · 11/04/2007 14:09

How about the Svan wooden high chair (can get it from kiddicare, sorry links dont work for me0?
Has a tray which you can remove and think you can also pull the tray up and behind the chair when not in use. A friend had it and liked it.
We have the Tripp Trapp which DS still happy to sit in at 2.4 (minus the rail bit).
He ate solid food - no mush - from the start and I found it fine, just have to clean the table (as opposed to the tray) a lot...

Kif · 11/04/2007 15:07

Thanks, everyone.

Hmmm. Thinks thinks thinks.

Y'know my pet hate, btw? High chairs without a fixed crotch bar/strap (i.e. safety harness essential). Daft!

Conversely, I'm much less obsessive than most over pushchairs! Each to their own!

MrsBadger · 11/04/2007 15:34

cheat and use the 5pt harness from reins
some even have D-ring bits for attaching to highchair

Kif · 11/04/2007 17:35

Anyone else have an obscure chair to recomend that may tick all my boxes?

I've eaten at the tree of all knowledge and from henceforth my life is pain and regret.

if love were a highchair....

DimpledThighs · 11/04/2007 19:05

my my that is some funky high chair - bet it doesn't look so funky when it is covered in old porridge.

hana · 11/04/2007 19:08

push a tripptrap to the table, and put an oilcloth on the floor around that part of the table. thye do get less messy as they get older!

yhes, we have to sort out getting a 3rd yet, still waiting for dd3 to be able to sit up

MrsBadger · 11/04/2007 19:20

well, if we're getting all designery I give you this

MrsBadger · 11/04/2007 19:23

or there's the ear trumpet look

or one with pneumatic lift

or a really adjustable one...

oranges · 11/04/2007 19:26

I love the one where you saw the legs off yourself to fit.

Gingermonkey · 11/04/2007 19:59

rofl at sawing the legs off - I'd get it all wrong and baby monkey would be all wobbly . I have a Mozzee, it looks lovely but is rubbish (think I'm going to get an antilop, used one on holiday in Mallorca and it was so good)

Kif · 12/04/2007 09:28

oh, mrs badger - see these tears of joy and envy - those are some highchairs (apart from the wooden one which is looopy!)

I notice they don't have visible prices... isc it like 'if you vhave to ask you can't afford it'?

Have Antelop and Tripp Trapp.
Antelop is best of all.
Beautifully designed, sturdy, cheap and easy to clean.

They use them in my ds's nursery and they are still going strong after 7 years.
