RECOMMEND ME A WASHING MACHINE PLEASE...

After a few months of an intermittent grinding noise, and a week of a burning smell, our washer/dryer has given up the ghost. Engineer due out tomorrow but has said probably not much point in repairing due to its make. (it was a cheapo bought in desperation a few years back)

I want to replace it with a washing machine, NOT a washer/dryer. (have weaned myself off the tumble dryer part, can cope without it, save some money and some of the planet...

Sooo, budget probably only £300, can you recommend me a simple (only ever use one programme anyway) no frills, no fuss, solid, longlasting washing machine???

TIA
xx

If you subscribe to their free trial, Which have recently tested 72 machines from 200.00 upwards. Well worth looking at here

Don't know about prices but most of the German brands have a good rep - I have a Siemens one (but I think it cost more than £300) - they did a free 5 year guarantee on parts when I bought mine iirc.

Bosch also are good...

Do you want a "normal" one or a "built-in" one to go with your new kitchen?

www.biasco.com is a good website to get ideas of prices

My Bosch something-or-other is brill. A shade above £300 if I remember rightly.

NoodleStroodle · 03/04/2007 15:38

Bosch - mine has been on at least twice a day for almost 10 years (!) and has only gone wrong when we made it - bra wire, ear-rings etc Wouldn't have anything else. Expensive to buy but worth every penny. A plumber told me that the German machines are all made with metal components but others replace with plastic ones and these wear out.

NoodleStroodle · 03/04/2007 15:39

Sorry - I only every wash on a 40 short wash and always comes out lovely. really easy to use unless you are DH

ucm · 03/04/2007 15:40

Someone told me that John lewises electrical stuff is made by Bosch but they put their name on it. I bought their own make dishwashed recently and I have to say it's excellent. What I also like about their stuff is that it comes with a 3 year guarantee.

this is in your price range

babygrand · 03/04/2007 15:46

I think AEG are good.

hippipotami · 03/04/2007 19:39

UCM, you are a star! Am very touched that you looked one up and linked it for me. Thank you xx

Am avoiding AEG at all costs - we had a nightmare machine of theirs (expensive too!!) a few years ago. After many breakdowns AEG replaced it FOC, but the new one was also a nightmare and in the end we threw it out and bought our current cheapy one...

Like the idea of Bosch, not sure the budget will stretch. Will definately have a good look at John Lewis though!

Thanks all, you are fab!!

I have had a Zanussi for the last 9 years and it is used at least twice a day with no probs at all !!!

ucm · 03/04/2007 20:12

No worries Hippotami, just remember the 3 year guarantee is free. So they can't be that bad otherwise JL would be swamped (pardon the pun)

Skyler · 03/04/2007 20:25

I think John Lewis machines are Zanussi ??? .
My Zanussi died after 6 years but was used lots (cloth nappies) in awful water in Cyprus for three of the years.
I also think Bosch are v good. I actually bought via Dixons website and had shockingly great service, phone calls to book and confirm delivery and say en route etc etc. You can sometimes get discount codes too.

Skyler · 03/04/2007 20:26

We got a Miele this time and it is great, but obv more expensive.

Skyler · 03/04/2007 20:34

Here is one

DontlookatmeImshy · 03/04/2007 20:36

Either Bosch or Meile but they tend to be a bit more pricy.

I found this site really helpful when we were replacing ours here

IIRC somewhere they recommend that if you have a limited budget then go for a basic model from a quality manufacturer rather than a top of the range model from a cheepo manufacturer

drosophila · 03/04/2007 20:41

Second Bosch. I buy cheapo TVs and stuff like that but somehting like a washing machine that jsut has to be reliable I push the boat out.

chocolateface · 03/04/2007 20:45

My Bosch is brilliant. We rented a house with one in, and loved it so much bought our own when we moved out.

ucm · 03/04/2007 21:14

I have promised myself a Miele as they give a 10 year guarantee, I may be wrong about this. But if they do, they can have my 650.00

Blessed2 · 04/04/2007 12:58

I recommend my Bosch Excel WFX2867 which was a WHICH? best buy in 2005. Check ebay or one of the comparison sites to see if they are still available. It should be under £300 now. Plus, maybe someone will check the WHICH? internet site for you later today and give you more choices (if you ask really nicely!)

Skyler · 04/04/2007 15:15

My Miele is the really basic model the W1512 I think and cost £465 but I managed to get £50 off. It only has a 3 year guarantee but I have heard such good things I am confident it will last much longer. We shall find out if it was money well spent in 10 years or so

hippipotami · 04/04/2007 15:28

Thank you all! One of my friends (from RL ) also recommended Bosch. So will definately look at those. Would love a Miele but will have to persuade dh to up the budget a bit...

Blessed2, please could you, if it is not too much trouble, perhaps take a look at the Which site for wm's in my pricerange, I beg you with lots of cherries on top??

hoover- 5yrs parts and labour warranty and copes very well with all of our nappies etc!

Pannacotta · 04/04/2007 23:18

Bosch or Miele. Have had both (sold the Bosch when we moved and upgraded to a Miele). Both excellent though the Miele average wash is slow, slower than the Bosch.
No probs with either at any time - Miele has coped with cloth nappies for 2 years and both coped well with v hard water.

cece · 04/04/2007 23:20

Bosch here and love it apart from the beeping at end of a cycle. Can't seem to turn it off

hippipotami · 05/04/2007 11:32

Thank you guys!! Dh just went up the local independent electrical shop in our village and returned with a Bosch. Now we need to find a way of lifting it up the stairs. (our washing machine lives in a built-in boiler/hotwater tank cupboard in our bathroom)

Am hoping for a long and clean life with my new 'toy'!!

(and can't wait to tackle the mahoosive pile of washing on the bathroom floor!)

Best buy according to your budget Tricity Bendix AW1260 £282!!!! According to WHICH? they are supposed to be reliable, but I've never used their brand so I don't know. Latest Bosch, which I think is the lasted upgrade to the model I have is Bosch WFX2868 £389!!!!
