How do you store your kids books?

helbel3 · 23/03/2007 12:06

Do you use a conventional bookcase, then, they try and get a book and everything else falls out?

Anybody got one of those display bookcases, dont hold as many but children can see what is on display www.tidy-books.com?

Anybody use anything different? I would love to know before I buy.

Thanks

ordinary bookcase, but all the good ones end up stored in DD's bed ..

Azure · 23/03/2007 12:26

When they were / are little I used a wide, low basket kept on the floor so they could easily see and flick through the books. Now DS1 is older (5) he has a bookcase in his bedroom.

nogoes · 23/03/2007 12:27

I have got a tidy books display. Ds really loves it, it holds about 70 books and the rest are stored in our bookcase or in his bedroom.

dd has one of those book shelves in her room
It is wonderful IMO as they are nice looking and don't take up too much room

works for us - anyway

Hulababy · 23/03/2007 12:32

When DD was younger they were in plastic storage boxes in her room, in the liunge and in the play room - all easy for her to get too.

Now, some are on her room on a shelf - mainly the ones she can read herself. There are always a handful at the bottom of her bed! And the rest are the bottom three shelves of our tall bookcase. She must have 150-200 books in all at the moment; think I need another clearout!

katzg · 23/03/2007 12:37

the DD's have a row on our pine book shelf in the living room and also a row on top of the chest of drawers in their bedroom, held in place with book ends. oh dd2's baby books are also in a plastic crate in the living room.

They have too many books but then i'm from the school of children can't have too many books!

helbel3 · 23/03/2007 12:38

thats the thing, ds1 has a bookcase in his room with about 200 books, the ones he has outgrown get passed to ds2, ds2 is the room I need the bookcase for and already has about 100 books. Then as ds2 outgrows them dd gets them, she is nearly two and already has about 50 books.

Then what do I do whilst out shopping yesterday, yes you got it, bought more books for everybody

I have the paint your own bookcases from GLTC. I am happy with them as they're not very deep so don't take up loads of room.

helbel3 · 23/03/2007 13:03

oh mine would never end up getting painted I think, is au naturel in at the moment

Ds (3) has a bookcase from www.tidy-books.com and it is fab. He can see most of his books at one glance and can easily choose one without loads more falling out. I love it - and it doesn't take up much space either. (Bit pricey though).

Pannacotta · 23/03/2007 13:31

We have the tidybooks one too, in DS's room and it does hold a lot. He loves picking out books from it and I think it looks great too, simple but the colour of all the book covers looks really cheerful in a small person's room...
Then we have a shelf for his books in our sitting room as well.

Pannacotta · 23/03/2007 13:32

Forgot to say that app it can be used to store CDs/DVDs etc as they get older (I bought the plain one in white for this reason so it doesn't date as much as the one with the aplhabet on it).

that is the one I have been looking at from tidy-books.com, have either of you screwed it to the wall or rested it to the wall. Both dh and I diy challenged

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 23/03/2007 13:45

That worried me too as have an allergy to drills! My DH just screwed it lightly to the wall without using a drill, he may have used a bradawl or just a screwdriver can't remember. The screws provided seemed to go in ok its not a prob honestly...

Pannacotta · 23/03/2007 13:46

You can get it from Jojomamanbebe with free delivery and the 10% discount makes it cheaper than buying from tidybooks (its exactly the same).

nogoes · 23/03/2007 15:15

You need to drill it to the wall.

helbel3 · 23/03/2007 22:28

ok, been sufing the net. whittled it down, let me know what you think pros and cons, what you would go for if you have time, PLEASSSSSE

  1. www.tidy-books.com
  1. www.johnlewis.com do search on star bookcase
  1. www.gltc.co.uk firestation bookcase
  1. www.vertbaudet.co.uk reading shelf
  1. normal

Sorry to be a complete pain in the ass, help really appreciated.

DS1 has the JL star bookcase, which fits neatly into his room and looks nice. The main disadvantage is that tall books can only go on the top shelf as the lower shelves are too short. DS2 has boxes of toys on the bottom shelf (e.g. one for Playmobil), which helps to keep his room tidy.

janeite · 24/03/2007 16:44

DDs each have a bookcase in their bedrooms. They have another shared one on the landing. The pantry also has a shelf full of their books. Currently we have more children's books than adults', as we recently did a huge cull of the adult books and only kept ones that either we want to read again, or non-fiction/reference/poetry/drama ones or that we really couldn't bare to part with.

janeite · 24/03/2007 16:48

Haven't looked at the links but persoanlly I'd go for a normal one, rather than a specifically "children's" one - good bookcases last forever; and even cheap ones last a long time! I'd buy a sturdy normal one, that will fit in as he grows up and changes the decor in his room.

MarsLady · 24/03/2007 16:49

I store them in their bookcases. They store them on the floor!

NomDePlume · 24/03/2007 16:53

in an ikea bookcase (hensvik, I think)

brimfull · 24/03/2007 17:01

I think that childrens bookcase is a brilliant idea,Children's books never stay on the bookcase ime.Too many different shapes and sizes.
Only thing that puits me off is it looks kind of institutional, like a school.

Ds's book are crammed on the bottom shelf of our bookcases.

panacotta-good idea about jojomamanbabe!

helbel3 · 24/03/2007 17:49

oh my god too many choices, I have been in his bedroom all day sorting toys etc.... Far too many toys as well as books, got two black bags for the charity shop.

will also be putting some Bob the builder bits on here for sale later if anyone interested.
