How do you store your kids books?

Do you use a conventional bookcase, then, they try and get a book and everything else falls out?

Anybody got one of those display bookcases, dont hold as many but children can see what is on display www.tidy-books.com?

Anybody use anything different? I would love to know before I buy.

Thanks

In the living room, piled haphazardly onto 'paint it yourself' MDF bookcase, which has NOT yet been painted by myself. I haven't even constructed the second one in the pack.

And ... under DD's bed. I should get a drawer-on-wheels effort and formalise it, probably. They're very handy there, I can tell her there are NO goblins/witches/Ploppers/Spooky Spoons under the bed as there are so many books there's not room for Bad Things.

Best thing I've seen yet is something a friend used to have - plastic-covered wire thing, very institutional-looking, but really really practical for different sized books.

we have a children's bookcase in the hallway upstairs- books on shelves that dd2 can reach are insdestructable chunky board books. - also faves in bedroom and keep a stash in kitchen shelves ( I think cookbooks SHOuLD go there, haha......)

I like the look of this sling bookcase from GLTC

My dad made us 'flip boxes', rather like the ones you get at the library, but smaller/narrower, for the boys to flip through for their favourite picture books.

BonyM · 24/03/2007 18:17

We have one of these from Verbaudet which is fantastic. Ours is in pastel colours though - they've changed the colourway since we bought it.

BonyM · 24/03/2007 18:20

Ah - see it is on your list. Def. recommend it. DD2 is only 2 and can put all her books away herself! A couple of my friends are after them as well since seeing ours! Cheaper than the Tidy Books one as well .

Pannacotta · 24/03/2007 18:33

I still like and recommend the Tidy books one over the others, esp in the plain white.
DS loves it and it has been much, much easier to keep his books tidier since we bought it, since he loves not only to take books out but to put them back too!
Also, as said, you can use it for kids CDs/DVDs once they no longer have picture books etc so it will last a while.
Sure you could also sell it on easily once shelf life is over.
Worth the money IMHO...

amidaiwish · 24/03/2007 18:58

we have the tidy books one too - it is so narrow that it doesn't intrude into the room at all. we have it just in between two doors at right angles to each other.

we got ours here

helbel3 · 24/03/2007 20:09

Who'd have though so many of us would comment on storage of books, Bonym how many books can you get in the vertbaudet reading shelf.

Everyone else who had the tidy book one, how many books can you store, and have you all got them screwed to the wall.

Hi roisin, argos have something very similar to the sling bookcase, two sling sections and two storage buckets underneath!!! oh the possiblities are endless.

yes we screwed ours to the wall
the number of books depends on the size of the books... but a lot! you can get quite a few board books deep for example. each shelf is about 3" deep.

Blackduck · 25/03/2007 10:43

Normal bookcase (slimline, which does mean the books stick out a bit), cheap and cheerful - and in his room.... (also on the floor of every room in the house, on the bed, by the bath... - but as my side of the bed has a spare library I can't complain...)

twinsetandpearls · 25/03/2007 10:57

Dd has a slimline bookshelf in the hall where her smaller books go, she has a crate under her bed where some larger books go and she can flip through them and the storage box system from vertabeudet which stores books in a similar way to the reading shelf, it is the one on page 3 of storage systems although dd one is pastels with painted flowers.

Oops, sorry helbel, just seen your question - there are 6 compartments and each is approx. six inches wide so depends on width of books - I would say 8 thickish board books per compartment or a lot more thin books! I reckon we have close to 70 in ours but there is room for more.

Other plus points - won't tip over and doesn't need fixing, has wheels so can be moved easily if required (although not easily by a child unless empty of books!), low enough for all books to be easily reached by even very little ones.

Can you tell that I love it?

helbel3 · 28/03/2007 12:37

ah yes bonym, wondered about the weight, have visions of ds1 ds2 pushing eaching other round in it, or worse still, pushing their sister round in it
