Calling Enid and/or others knowledgeable in the ways of posh wellies

I want to get my dad a pair of spectacularly fantastic wellington boots to do his muddy walks in (birthday approaching fast). They need to be ones that he will swoon over because they are fab in every way a wellington could be fab. I googled those Aigle ones you mentioned on the pricey but worth it thread, Enid, and they look brilliant, though I do see what you mean by pricey. But I'm confused with the different linings. Are the leather lined ones the best as the price implies or does it depend? If so, what does it depend on? And are any other brands worth considering? My dad really is a sweetie and deserves the lovliest wellies possible so I will be eternally grateful for any advice from you or anyone else with wellie expertise.

LOL

Aigle are one of those funny brands that are premium in the UK but you can pick up in the hypermarket in France. (I bought the DCs wellies for about £3 a pair in France last year)!

ScummyMummy · 04/03/2007 23:45

Thanks. So you guys think Hunters could be better? Do you know anything about linings? [hopeful]

Can't help you as I'm not at all a posh wellie...

Lovely idea though

ScummyMummy · 04/03/2007 23:54

Thanks, welliemum!

I agree re Hunters.
I bought mine over 20 years ago (!!!)
They are a perfect fit and still going strong as the guy in the shop said they would.
So good for the planet as well!
But wish mine were blue and not green...... not being a properly posh person!

Hunter's?

I've had mine for years and years.

Just the normal green ones.

ipanemagirl · 05/03/2007 09:22

my trendy friends have the fabulously colourful ones ala Glastonbury.
Are these still in?

i fancy the red ones

Overrun · 05/03/2007 09:26

I am so envious of you all wearing hunters, my calfs are too big Now why did I own up to that? I have cheap green dunlop ones, which do the job, but I do have a fab barbour

ScummyMummy · 05/03/2007 09:34

The red ones do look rather cool, pesme. I've seen some v nice aubergine ones on another site too. But I am getting distracted- my dad will want a boring colour, I know. So will cotton lined ones be warm enough? He's a year round walker, very keen and always wears his wellies but we're talking suburban woods and farms and fields and parks rather than country proper.

My ancient Hunters were Not Warm in the snow a few weeks ago! My friend had sheep skin lined boots and a smug warm look on her face when we took the kids sledging the other day. I would have given anything to have WARM feet!

monkeymonkeymoomoo · 05/03/2007 09:39

Littlelapin - you wore wellies to a wedding!!??? How utterly decadent and too cool for school

MuminBrum · 05/03/2007 09:40

I thought Le Chameau Chasseur were the Rolls Royce of the boot world?

Hunters are past it now, I'm afraid!!!

The ones to go for are Dubarry (tres chic but very expensive), Aigle (and yes, leather lined if at all possible as they are fantastic!) or Le Chameau.

If you wear wellies regularly as I do (spending a few hours a day in them usually) it's generally worth spending more on them - they are more comfortable and tend to last longer than the cheaper ones.

Hope this helps!

ScummyMummy · 05/03/2007 09:43

Ah! Some info on linings at last! So you think go for lined, ig? Would neoprene or leather be better for year round use?

OP posts:
ScummyMummy · 05/03/2007 09:48

yep- will def get green or brown or black or somesuch, fio. Colour isn't my main worry- my dad would be horried with coloured wellies! Ooo- the wellie wearers are out in force now. Le Chameau Chasseur sounds like haute cuisine- I'll have a look.

OrlandoTheMarmaladeCat · 05/03/2007 09:50

I have the Chasseur wellies, and they are utterly fab. They've lasted forever and are worth every penny!
