I need a change of magazine. Have they all got worse (apart from EVE) or is it just me?

I love getting magazines on subscription. At the momemt I get EVE, Easy Living and Good Housekeeping. But the last few editions of GH seem to be full of adverts and menopause information and not much else. I quite like Easy Living but I really can't be arsed reading about yet another yummy mummy who lives in a pristine house, decorated soley in white with tasteful family antiques scattered casually everywhere. It's just so not like my home, or the home of anyone I know. I'm almost 40, and I feel like I'm in magazine no-man's land. What do the rest of you enjoy?

I just used my Tesco vouchers to get Gardener's World

janeite · 03/03/2007 20:37

I used to like Marie Claire but it's now horribly "celeb" driven. I also used to like "She" but it now seems to be trying to be "Easy Living" but without any actual, erm, content!

I still quite like Easy Living - I can cope with the yummy mummies but find the fashion really really out of my price league.

My favourite nowadays is "Ideal Home" of all things, as it allows me a couple of hours of dreaming every month and keeps dd1 quiet for a while too!

Agree about GH. Now aimed at 50-60 yr olds it seems. Lots of stuff about menopause (so depressing) & airbrushed pics of wrinklies with chunky legs. Not that there's anything wrong with that but it's no longer a good mag for me. Also, it's become coy & syrupy & I wish MIL hadn't bought me a subscription for Xmas again.

Vanity Fair usually good and Marie Claire okay occasionally.

WideWebWitch · 03/03/2007 20:46

I buy

Eve, which I REALLY like
Red, which is variable but has a new editor so may change (she used to be Company editor iirc)
GH, variable, as you say
Easy Living, it's ok
Olive, I like
Woman and Home, surprisingly good imo
Grazia sometimes and every time I think why did I buy this, it's a nothing sort of mag don't know who it's for really
Ditto Marie Clare, buy it rarely, find it irritating
New Woman I buy sometimes but don't really rate it, it's gone downhill imo
She, hmm, not sure what I think, it's changed direction and is sometimes good, sometimes not.

I think you should give Woman and Home a go. It's often full of fortysomething women who I identify with. And maybe She.

I also buy
The Observer on Sunday
The Guardian on Sat
The Ecologist sometimes
The Economist sometimes
Private Eye
Heat sometimes
OK and Hello depending

paulaplumpbottom · 03/03/2007 20:49

GH is still good for the recipes though. Its worth buying it from that alone.

choosyfloosy · 03/03/2007 21:01

Vanity Fair is fun but at that price it's an annual thing tbh.

private eye, but I actually miss the small ads more than I thought I would, i used to read them all and they've nearly disappeared.

Try New Scientist? or The Week which is a bit less depressing.

FrogPrincess · 03/03/2007 21:17

I'm getting tired of Red, very repetitive, Vogue OK, but I think I should get Vanity Fair more often, usually enjoy it when I do get it
However you can't beat the French Elle (the original and best, and it's weekly!), very different from the other countries' editions, I love it

MrsMuddle · 03/03/2007 21:47

OK, I'm going to try Vanity Fair, Woman & Home and Red. I'll let you know what I think. I will definitely not renew my subscription to Easy Living - this month's was crap, and the colour of the free lipstick was like something a four year old would wear at halloween. (I will wait until I've got next month's though - it comes with free oven gloves . I will also cancel my GH subscription and subscribe to Olive instead. I like it more and more each month. I used to get Delicious, but it got a bit pretentious. Thanks for all your help. I've enjoyed googling all your recommendations.

I meant to add - I looked at Junior, which a few of you mentioned. My DC are slightly older (10 & 11). Does anyone know if there is a similar magazine for parents of older children?

Ok, I bought Monacle today. It's by Tyler Brulé, so I don't have very high hopes for it. But still ... it's very thick, lots of very glossy adverts, and some actual content. It's British, although lots of the content is international. It's just started now - this is the first issue. I can't imagine there will be that many more ...

Nockney · 10/03/2007 23:00

Where are the magazine people? Do I need to start a new thread about Monacle? Probably should read it first ...

MrsSpoon · 10/03/2007 23:14

I am 31 but with two small DSs so feel like I am nearer 40.

I currently subscribe to:-

Good Food
Eve
Easy Living
Red

I am currently feeling like cancelling my Red sub, last couple of months I have felt that for such a hefty mag there is virtually nothing in it. Also Eve, Easy Living and Red seem to be almost sharing articles, ie an article about the website Second Life appeared in one mag one month and another mage the next month, not the first time this has happened.

Still liking Easy Living and feel that all these glossy mags have ridiculously expensive stuff in them not just Easy Living but tend to look more at the styles/colours of the clothes rather than where they came from and how much they are as I know they are out of my league anyway.

Have tried She but find it a bit up and down.

Loving Grazia just now, thinking of subscribing, waiting 'till they offer a freebie gift that I fancy though.

MrsSpoon · 10/03/2007 23:15

Blimey that's a long post about mags, I am quite addicted!

Looking forward to the free oven gloves too.

southeastastra · 10/03/2007 23:23

I only subscribe to Eve it has everything I need from a magazine.

ledodgy · 10/03/2007 23:45

Also my dd is named after it but don't tell her! I saw it on a tesco magazine rack in 2003 and thought I like that name! I'm going to think of an exciting, probably biblical story to tell her when she's old enough I can't possibly tell her the real origins of her name!

lizziebennett · 19/03/2007 17:34

I get Eve on subscription (went without for a while, missed it & re-subscribed) but we also get The Week instead of a daily paper, and I pinch DH's Private Eye as well. Don't think much of other women's mags and even Eve has too much fashion in it...
