I need a change of magazine. Have they all got worse (apart from EVE) or is it just me?

I love getting magazines on subscription. At the momemt I get EVE, Easy Living and Good Housekeeping. But the last few editions of GH seem to be full of adverts and menopause information and not much else. I quite like Easy Living but I really can't be arsed reading about yet another yummy mummy who lives in a pristine house, decorated soley in white with tasteful family antiques scattered casually everywhere. It's just so not like my home, or the home of anyone I know. I'm almost 40, and I feel like I'm in magazine no-man's land. What do the rest of you enjoy?

I stopped buying easy living the month they had a 'make it yourself' leather monkey for a child for over £200 on their 'best buy' page.

It was a Bill Amberg toy (who just happens to be married to the editor - and his products are in every edition).

vanity fair is very up and down but i still get it every month. oddly, i find the mix of glamourous film stars, christopher hitchens and gruesome high-class murders very addictive. graydon carter's been very outspoken about the war and the war on civil liberty as well, which is fairly brave for an ed of such a big mag. he's canadian, which helps. pass me a salladegasquatzoonaberry, nqc.

greenday · 02/03/2007 11:23

Grazia for a quick fix. But for longer reading, I like Eve and Marie Claire (although I do agree that standard has gone down). InStyle is great for times when I fancy flipping through pages and looking at pretty pictures of clothes, bags, etc.
Funnily enough, I've noticed that in the last few weeks, I've been loitering in the magazine section ... finding myself wanting to buy something but not knowing which to buy. They all don't seem enticing enough. Been ending up with the papers instead.

lunavix · 02/03/2007 11:24

I'm a little younger than you, (shouldn't make a difference though!) but I get Organic Life, The Green Parent and 4 kids.... just my interests I suppose. I'm not hideously interested in Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, or the latest 'do.

puddle · 02/03/2007 11:24

I like vanity Fair too. I also get Red but it invariably makes me feel inadequate in some way.

Grazia is just dull - way too much about plastic surgery and extreme diets.

expatinscotland · 02/03/2007 11:26

I think I'll stick with Good Food and Oprah!

Nockney · 02/03/2007 11:33

He is indeed, aitch. I'm pretty sure he founded Spy, which was the Best Magazine ever for ages.

I'm almost feeling ill enough to start a game of 'name the random Canadian musicians other people have on their shelves'.

AitchTwoOh · 02/03/2007 11:36

yep, he was the Spy guy. absolute when he was appointed VF ed.

AitchTwoOh · 02/03/2007 11:38

does no-one buy Private Eye? that's my treat. tbh i'd rather read a newspaper than a glossy, by and large, it's become much easier now the tabloid format is gaining currency. (although i wish the graudian had just gone for it, as i'm still not in love with the berliner).

gscrym · 02/03/2007 11:39

Which one has a good range of Freebies? Used to get some good ones with Red.

Nockney · 02/03/2007 11:44

I've tried to read Private Eye, but unfortunately it makes no sense to foreign old me.

RanToTheHills · 02/03/2007 11:50

prospect? I remember being able to get areally good one from the US when I was in London.I'm not american but liked it's longerarticles and analytical content.
Allthe women'snoes seemto havedumbed down(uneless I've dumbed up with age?)

allmytimeonmumsnet · 02/03/2007 11:54

Junior
Juno
Permaculture!

amylou · 02/03/2007 13:12

Yeah I used to like She too until it changed its format and its awful now! I buy Essentials - find that a good read, usually has a nice freebie and has a wide range of items

expatinscotland · 02/03/2007 16:25

I had a look at EAsy Living. Terri Hatcher was on the cover. I immediately put it back.

Sorry, she's a munter and I'm sick of her.

bossykate · 02/03/2007 16:27

i subscribe to:

  • Time Out
  • Eve
  • Ideal Home
  • Good Food magazine
nogoes · 02/03/2007 16:28

I read Red and Junior every month and sometimes I read SHE and period homes.

bossykate · 02/03/2007 16:28

am thinking about subscribing to the economist.

LittleSarah · 02/03/2007 16:30

Hate womens magazine generally.

Really like Vanity Fair, also get food mags (especially Good Food) and occasionally a current-affairsy one.

oxocube · 02/03/2007 16:33

Only ever buy Good Food and get the odd Good Housekeeping passed on. My Mum saves up Bella and Best for me when I go home

bubblerock · 02/03/2007 17:01

I tend to do the trial offers of magazines and haven't really found one that I would pay full price for regularly. I get cosmo at the moment (3 issues for 99p)but I won't subscribe, I'll just trial another one. Take a look Here for offers. Just remember to cancel the DD once you've received the first issue.

foxybrown · 02/03/2007 17:08

Red are doing 6 for a quid, Instyle, Marie Claire and Delicious have got 3 for a quid. Just don't forget to unsubscribe!

expatinscotland · 03/03/2007 20:14

Anything that costs over £3 I don't buy.

I love how they all start out reasonably-priced, then start hiking the price.

Posey · 03/03/2007 20:28

I've been reading Junior since it started (about 9 years). MIL got me a subscription about 5 Christmases ago and hasn't bothered to cancel it.
Read, variously, Easy Living, Eve, She, Woman and Home, Health & Fitness, Healthy, and anything that has an appealing freebie.
