Pampers or Huggies - and why?

I'm a market researcher and have recently been briefed on a nappy project. I've been trying to appear knowledgeable to my client - after all I have had two children - but the nappy market has changed so much since I had mine I have no idea what you would buy or why!

My boys are almost 15 and 12, so you can see how long ago it was! We were the decade that had gender specific nappies, and the market was dominated (I think) by Pampers. Huggies was really only doing pull ups then.

So what do/did you use and why? It will really help me get up to speed, so thank you very much if you can help!

I use mainly cloth but I have been reduced to pampers on trips away

I don't buy them cos they make dd come out in a rash

boots don't; neither do asda ones

I use Tesco's for ds (purple packet) they have stretchy tapes. I wouldn't use Pampers or Huggies because they just don't fit him properly as the tapes don't stretch the same way as the Tesco ones.

Having said that I did use Pampers for dd but first baby an all .

Pampers Active fit are softer & much more stretchy than Pampers Baby Dry. I always found the Baby Dry nappies a bit plasticy.

We used Pampers Baby Dry for DD, moving onto Pulls Ups when she was about 15/16 months.

Tried various Huggies and Pampers Active Fit - didn't get on with those at all; too many leaks.

Think you have to just try a few and see which suits your baby most - no perfect match for all babies IME.

Used pampers newborn but bought huggies newborn so I could get the free changing bag

Huggies don't absorb the poo and I have had poo overflowing from the nappy when I have opened them. Have had poo seep out on to duvet, cushion, my top & dh top when she was wearing a vest & bodysuit.

In fact I am going to send the packet (hardly used) back to huggies as I wouldn't want to pass them on to someone else

Other Mnetters recommended Tescos own and they work well too

pampers for the dts

huggies cause horrendous nappy rash on the dts.

But with the older two, it was always huggies, as pampers don't fit as well, and do tend to leak. Shop brands are never as good.

Am really surprised that there hasn't been more of a mention of the more eco-friendly disposables, TBH. When not using washables (on our DC, you understand!) we have over the years used the 'Nature' ones (not bad but tapes can dig in a bit), Moltex Oko (nice but pricey, and somehow just didn't fit DS) and Bambo Nature - like these a lot.

kbaby · 25/02/2007 11:31

I used pamers on DD as they fitted her better but on DS I use huggies as they seem to contain his wee more. Huggies have a softer inside but the tapes do dig into DS thighs

DD has been out of nappies for about a year now, but I used to swap between brands. I found one sort would be good for one stage, and then they'd start leaking, or the fit would be odd and I'd swap to another. I can't really remember which were best for each stage, but I do know that it's been different with each child, although I don't know whether that's because of changes in the nappies or differences in the DCs!

Thank you all for this - it was really helpful. We've run our research now, and one thing more that would be really helpful is if you could list the main associations that you have with each brand.

What does Pampers stand for? What does Huggies stand for? In other words, how do the two brands differ in their associations? So far, it seems to us that Huggies stands for greater softness and flexibility.

What do you think? If you had to advise each company on what their strengths were, what would you say?
