Pampers or Huggies - and why?

I'm a market researcher and have recently been briefed on a nappy project. I've been trying to appear knowledgeable to my client - after all I have had two children - but the nappy market has changed so much since I had mine I have no idea what you would buy or why!

My boys are almost 15 and 12, so you can see how long ago it was! We were the decade that had gender specific nappies, and the market was dominated (I think) by Pampers. Huggies was really only doing pull ups then.

So what do/did you use and why? It will really help me get up to speed, so thank you very much if you can help!

huggies are poo
i love pampers ( five babies!!)
Use active fit in day
babydry at night

I bought packs of Pampers and Huggies before ds was born. We thought we were really rubbish as putting on nappies because of all the leaks (well, to be fair that was a good part of it) - kept running out of clean clothes!

I changed to Tescos when the brand nappies ran out and they fit so much better. I think probably different brands suit different babies though as my friend found Tescos useless.

As a new mother I was definitely swayed by the adverts and assumed the big brands would be superior for some reason... Will be switching to reusables soon though as the environmental aspect (and cost!) bothers me. I'd really like to see the big disposible brands trying to "green" their products. It would definitely influence my choice of purchase.

Having just typed this though I realise that there are more environmental friendly disposible options already and I don't buy them - not sure why... I think I just assume they won't be as good

Reusables or tescos economy

Never ever pampers or huggies - both repulse me for reasons I can go into if you really want to know! - to do with the company behind them more than the actual nappy

petrified · 21/02/2007 00:08

The first month huggies were best.

I now use pampers as much as I can afford because I find huggies and tescos explode when DS poos.

whatkatydidntdo · 21/02/2007 00:10

With all 4 of mine I preferred Huggies but would have either, Huggies or Pampers depending which one was on special offer!

eidsvold · 21/02/2007 00:17

i used pampers more than huggies when I lived in the UK. Really liked the active fit but also used Tescos own brand.

Lazylou · 21/02/2007 00:29

Have always used Pampers Active Fit and in my experience of changing nappies, they are the best. Never liked Huggies, found them too bulky and a bit papery. Would have considered using Tesco/Sainsbury's own but DD is out of nappies during the day now and I've got a massive stash of Pampers that we have been using at night (because they were on special offer)

Marscentio · 21/02/2007 00:30

George nappies in ASDA. Cheaper than the titled nappies and better.

Out of the two, Pampers. I found Huggies would last a full night & the lining tended to rip. DD had permanent nappy rash when I used them for a month while in Oz (Pamper not available here)

Pamper Active were also a bit useless, the didn't fit how they said they did & they leaked everynight.

After a while I discovered Tesco own (Not the value brand, the other one) and wish I had discovered them a long time before I did. No leaks, no splitting, lasted the night, cheaper too.

In Oz now so use Snuggles or Babylove....avoiding Huggies like the plague!

sandcastles · 21/02/2007 04:02

I found Huggies wouldn't last a full night

eidsvold · 21/02/2007 04:21

sandcastles I find snugglers horrid and use either aldi pull ups or huggies mainly with my two - only cause huggies now do nappy pull ups. Big baby love fan for ages.

macneil · 21/02/2007 06:00

Huggies, because they have pictures of the Lion King and Pooh on them, and Pampers has Big Bird from Sesame St, and my husband won't put up with Big Bird, he hates him. This is not a joke.

sandcastles · 21/02/2007 06:15

Eidsvold, we haven't got Aldi down here in SA, that I know of.

Haven't noticed a prob with Snuggles, but babylove do seem to fit better

BecauseImWorthIt · 21/02/2007 08:16

Thank you so much - this is really helpful. Also makes me very grateful that I no longer have nappies to change

Just one other question - before I get into trouble from MNHQ for running a research group online rather than just asking a couple of questions - what's the difference between ordinary Pampers and Pampers Active Fit?

active fit have really elasticated, "stretchy" fastening tabs at the side so this allows baby to move around more with ease and allows more flexibility, actifit are way better {smile}

pelvicflawed · 21/02/2007 11:43

Bought pampers to start with becuase DS was small and they were the only micro size nappies we cound find. Carried on with them for a while before moving to Nature Baby and then reusables (wasn't happy with env impact of disp nappies but it took us a while to get there as we were 'like bunnies in the headlights' when DS was born) Of the supermarket ones Sainsbury's in my experience were absolute rubbish, but Tescos's were as good as Pampers.

AitchTwoOh · 21/02/2007 11:49

am really interested in this as we've just started using pampers actviefit after finding dd had red marks on her legs with huggies.
can anyone recommend a supermarket brand with fabric-y tabs like activefit?

SlightlyMadScientist · 21/02/2007 12:01

Either if I have vouchers. Pampers by choice. Huggies just seem a bit less flexible and wider between the legs. Tapes are also a bit wider and more rigid. Scrathes DDs tum and thighs. Have tried tescos and didn't like them (although prob better than Huggies). Maybe I will try them again now she is a bit older and a different shape.

I think different brands suit different baby shapes. All my babies were skin and bones but I can see how huggies would be better if they had a bit more meat on them.

On the other hand maybe I am just too used to pampers and when I change I see all of the differences as 'faults' IYSWIM.

SlightlyMadScientist · 21/02/2007 12:04

I think tescos do an 'active fit' equivalent. ~They certainly do their new baby in yellow like pampers, there standard ones in greeny/aqua like pampers and they also do a purple packet which I have always assumed is an active fit equivalent. Maybe someone who is registered with them for online shopping could confirm.,

Enid · 21/02/2007 12:11

I only use Tescos own

cheap and dont cause nappy rash (pampers do on dd3)

SlightlyMadScientist · 21/02/2007 12:27

Boots do an 'active stretch' too . 5yrs ago tescos and boots nappies appeared to be identical - even down to the pretty pictures. I suspect you will find them in tescos.

tinkerbellie · 21/02/2007 12:29

definately prefer pampers as used huggies with ds and they leaked like hell

also the same for the baby wipes the shops own ones are great the huggies ones dry out especially the ones that come in that fancy resealable packet that aren't supposed to dry out

BadZelda · 21/02/2007 12:49

I've always used Moultex with my LO - never have any leaks, nappy rash or other problems, and they're 70% biodegradable as well as being cheaper than pampers / huggies? Slightly thicker though, due to not being made entirely of plastic...and possibly not that easy to get hold of if you're outside London? (But then waitrose / tesco stock Nature nappies which are nearly as good.)

AitchTwoOh · 21/02/2007 12:51

thanks sms. don't shop from tesco, too scary, but i've got a boots round the corner so will go and look there.
