Has anyone ever bought a doll's house for their ds?

Does anyone know of a house/doll's house that is suitable for my nearly 2 year old ds .... I was wondering whether he might enjoy something like this for his birthday. He has a farm etc which he loves and I thought about the ELC rocket etc but figured he wouldnt really know what it was ... but would imagine he would have fun playing with a house! Does anyone else find their ds enjoys playing house - I looked at the elc one but it is very expensive and pink pink pink! any ideas?

We have a pine & red one & my mindees love it

Mind you at 2 he might be approaching the pink & fluffy stage (lots of boys do)

My DD has a beautiful dolls house that she got for Xmas and my 18 month old DS loves to play with it! How about the Happyland thatched cottage - a bit more robust and less girly, cheaper too and it plays a few noises!

We got a lovely wooden one for DS from ELC (when he was about 2) with lots of chunky furniture and a family. He still plays with it now and he's almost 5.

Gobbledigook · 16/02/2007 08:45

Mine got the very plain wooden one from ELC a few years ago (I think they were about 3.5 and 2 when they got it). Tbh, they hardly played with it - well, they sat in it and pretended it was a boat but that was about it! The roof fell off and we just chucked it in the end as it was just in the way.

Funny really because ds2 and ds3 do play with one at nursery - mind you, it's more of a fire station....

not sure my dp would appreciate it if i bought a pink and fluffy one Katymac .. he would probably think it a little strange me buying one at all! not sure why they all have to be so girly ... bizarre!

do people find that they buy it for their dds and then their ds plays with it .. or do you specifically buy it for your ds?

I just thought one with a number of different rooms where he could pretend they had something to eat, had a bath, went to bed etc would be good but some of the less girly plasticy ones are a bit small and limited.

There is a lovely wooden fire station arround somewhere

It's spectacular - with loads of accessorises

If he's nearly 2, go with happy land. My kids have played with it SO much, the thatched cottage is lovely. My 5 year old ds still loves it, and he makes 'Bobsville' (Bob the BUilder) with it.

We nearly got a dolls house this year, then eventually plumped for a little wooden tree house which has furniture, people and so on, plus animals, rope ladders, a swing etc. We felt it was less likely to be rejected as being "for girls" in a year or two (ds is nearly 4). The other thing we considered was buying the ELC wooden castle and putting furniture and people in it instead of knights and dragons. I think a dolls house type toy is a good choice for both genders at this age, lots of opportunity for imaginary play there.

cjmummy · 16/02/2007 08:56

I just spotted some furniture on the ikea web site but couldnt see the house for it to go in! Does anyone know if they do one?

FrannyandZooey - do you remember where you got yours from? That sounds good!

It was from our local dept store, and I tried searching online unsuccessfully, but they did also have them at TK Maxx around Christmas. I'll have another search to see if I can find one online.

Gobbledigook · 16/02/2007 09:04

KatyMac - is it the PinToys one - it's lovely but about £50 just for the fire station!

Heavenis · 16/02/2007 09:04

We bought one for the Ds's a year or so ago.

We bought it from toys r us they had it on offer at the time with all the wooden furnitue.

FrannyandZooey · 16/02/2007 09:05

oh here it is!

It was cheaper in TK Maxx so worth looking in there.

If you search for "tree house" on Amazon they have a few different types.

Jimjams2 · 16/02/2007 09:07

I'm going to get ds1 one for his next birthday. His favourite thing at school apparently. I took him into a dools house shop recently and couldn't get him out.

cjmummy · 16/02/2007 09:11

glad to see I am not the only one considering this then!

Yes, got him a plain wooden house that was reduced in the ELC sale for his second birthday (as well as some other stuff). He loves playing with it, taking stuff out, putting it back in, making the people have tea or visit the doctors or take the dog and cat to the vet. (He's 3.5 now, btw). Usually takes the dolls out of the house to play with them though - think the rooms are a bit small for his current level of fine motor control.

cjmummy · 16/02/2007 09:27

i think that is what i am after edam ... elc dont seem to do plain ones any more but I will keep looking. If not perhaps I will go for the happyland cottage but it doesnt seem as if there is as much to play with on that one.

We bought this for ds's 2nd birthday and then I bought a playmobil bedroom set to put in it so that it was a bit more house like (cut out two felt rectangles for bed covers - he loves putting the firemen to 'night night'!)

scotlou · 16/02/2007 12:35

here do some plain children's dolls houses (it's where we got ours - supposedly for dd but really for ds!) but they seem to be out of stock until beginning March. I found them really helpful at the time though. What I would say is that I don't think at 2 your ds will play with it much. We got it for dd when she was 2 (and ds nearly 5) and tbh she has only really started playing with it recently.
