Where would you recommend I buy a new washing machine?

Aghhhh. My machine started squirting water the other day. I thought it was a leaky seal but realised it was coming from the door itself. Then it turned into a fountain and I realised there was a hole in the glass door!!!!!! The load was mostly socks and pants with a pair of jeans. Can only assume the button on the jeans has hit the door. There is a round chunk missing on the inside. When I opened the machine half the glass stayed where it was. Not very happy.

Anyway machine was on its last legs anyway so time to get a new one.

Been looking at sites but I find it mind boggling trying to work out who is best. Any recommendations. My conscience tells me I should go local but my wallet says I should look for the best deal online. I need it fast. What do you suggest?

Thanks.

John lewis own brand has good recommendation I think and deliver quite quickly.

TheBlonde · 16/01/2007 10:55

johnlewis.com
heard good things about kitchenappliances.co.uk

CocoLoco · 16/01/2007 11:07

Do a price comparison on pricerunner.com to make sure you're not paying way more if you go local.

Or buy through johnlewis.com BUT go through quidco so you get cashback.

tenbygirl · 16/01/2007 11:29

We got ours from here;

www.redhillappliances.co.uk/

very impressed, cheaper than anywhere else, free and fast delivery.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/01/2007 11:30

This is the appliance website that our architect and builders all recommended. Reliable, cheap.

Skyler · 16/01/2007 11:33

I have to say I was very impressed by Dixons of all people. They had the Miele I wanted at the cheapest price with free delivery and I then found a discount code to make it even cheaper. They delivered when they said they would (ordered Sun del Thurs) and called me to confirm the del before hand. I was worried and went for price in the end but they didn't let me down, although the delivery was from Curry's

yossa · 16/01/2007 11:33

bought a whirlpool condenser dryer for £190 in asda this morning! they have washing machines too - is cheaper than any i can find online

tinkerbellie · 16/01/2007 11:37

just need to say to you do not get a hotpoint one, we havehad one for three years it cost £350, and it brakes every six months, it has had two new motors, new soap box etc, and when thefilter gets blocked you can't empty it yourself as it is under the machine
my sister has had one since feb (hotpint again) and it has broken twice, the full electric panel as gone!!

saltire · 16/01/2007 11:38

My mum got a servis washing machine from her local Tesco extra, i think she said it was £199. Good model, does the job. I suppose it depends what you want from it. My MIL has a state of the art washing machine, which cost about £800, and uses 3 programmes on it!

JanH · 16/01/2007 11:38

Comet can often deliver in 2 days and they carried my washer up a flight of stairs

Also when I had a dryer from them - also carried up flight of stairs - the delivery bloke wired it into a wall-socket for me (in bathroom, no plugs) because I couldn't manage it, even though he wasn't supposed to.

I've been very pleased with Comet (lots of people aren't though)

JanH · 16/01/2007 11:39

(Oh, and Bosch machines are brill - less superb than Miele but much less superb prices too )

Piffle · 16/01/2007 11:39

comet are devils spawn esp for after care
spit spit

We love our miele washer comes with manufacturers 25 yr warranty!

saadia · 16/01/2007 11:40

I think (but don't quote me on it) that John Lewis provide a free 5yr guarantee with all appliances.

saltire · 16/01/2007 11:42

piffle - agree with you on that one. My machine broke last year, It took 8 days before engineer came to fix it - at this point Comet said to me
"well it's not really 8 days Mrs Saltire, it's only 6 because we don't count weekends". Then had to wait another 12 days without a machine as engineer said it needed a part. Comet seemed to think this was acceptable

tinkerbellie · 16/01/2007 11:43

piffle how much was that and where from
we have the comet insurance and i asked the bloke whohas been to repair it soo often he might as well move in, what actuallt has to happen before you willget a new machine and he said that the eletric panel has to go butthat happened to my sister's and they just replaced the panel

Skyler · 16/01/2007 11:44

The John Lewis machines are Zanussi in disguise (I think I read that on another thread). We went for Miele as I was mistakenly feeling flush lol. Got the basic model. Have a Bosch dishwasher and fridge freezer though and really pleased with those.

jodee · 16/01/2007 11:46

Not argos - nothing wrong with product, but their contracted-out delivery/installer people made a right balls up with my friends new w/machine, pipes not connected properly, water seeped under their flooring without them knowing, big insurance job.

allmytimeonmumsnet · 16/01/2007 11:51

Had a look on John lewis but I'm after an integrated on so we can put a door on it and they only had 2 - £600 and £700 each!!!!! So no thank-you. Tried kitchen appliances and got redirected to some business website.

we've just bought a lovely new 7.5kg drug LG washer from Currys washing machine

its direct drive rather than belt driven which means it quieter

Piffle · 16/01/2007 12:11

don't get me started on comet
Firstly took 11 days to get engineer out
Was wrong engineer for our postcode, despite him spending 2 hrs, correctly diagnosing a faulty drum from fallen weights. Ordering replacements parts and then finding out he was not allowed to do it as our postcode was special
So booked another engineer, another 12 days told them the parts they needed in advance so they could just whizz in and do it
But no
they had to diagnose it themselves cue ordering parts and saying will be 14 days for drum as need ordering from France and the factory transport is affected by strike.
Great then drum turns up, cue engineer to fix it and whole 19 days later.
turns up and then curses, putting in a drum is a two man job, I'm writing this machine off, here is a voucher to the insured value etc.
Arseholes
Then THEN THEN we turn up at the devil spawn shop to redeem our voucher against a miele as recommened by the entire world - to avoid EVER seeing a repairman again and they try to tell us we can ONLY redeem it against an exact or closest item replacement.
Cue very angry DP
cue we get what we want and FREE delivery
But jesus did dp really have to flip his lid (in 7 yrs of knowing him it is the only time I have ever seen him angry)
so that's basically it in a nutshell

allmytimeonmumsnet · 16/01/2007 12:26

Hmmm. I think this last one was from currys or comet (comet I think). We took out their 5 yr warranty after previous machine lasted 15 mths. After 4.5 yrs machine broke for 2nd time and engineer ordered us a new one. we've had that one for 2yrs. The electrics have just packed up and now door has gone. Do not recommend indesit to anyone.

However so far looking best deals have been on currys and comet (dixons seems to be same as comet now).

Think I am going to phone local shop and see what they can offer as I am sure the after sales will be better.

I vote for local shop as DH normally does the dealing face-to-face with the owner and he can usually get a good 'cash' deal. Have recently had a tumble drier and range cooker by this method and would recommend.
Used Co-op electricals online (sorry am useless at links, you'll have to google) when I bought my new Dyson and found them very competitive and delivered quickly.
BTW my current WM is a cheap £189.99 Candy (AA rated) which we bought from our local Co-op in 2003, so is 4 yrs old. No probs at all and would buy a 'cheap brand' again - I only use 2 diff programs after all (1 for whites, 1 for colours).
Sorry for long post.
HTH and you get a swanky new machine soon
