Where would you recommend I buy a new washing machine?

Aghhhh. My machine started squirting water the other day. I thought it was a leaky seal but realised it was coming from the door itself. Then it turned into a fountain and I realised there was a hole in the glass door!!!!!! The load was mostly socks and pants with a pair of jeans. Can only assume the button on the jeans has hit the door. There is a round chunk missing on the inside. When I opened the machine half the glass stayed where it was. Not very happy.

Anyway machine was on its last legs anyway so time to get a new one.

Been looking at sites but I find it mind boggling trying to work out who is best. Any recommendations. My conscience tells me I should go local but my wallet says I should look for the best deal online. I need it fast. What do you suggest?

Thanks.

make sure you check delivery times though - our choice was out of stock with manufacturer so we had a 6 week wait

allmytimeonmumsnet · 16/01/2007 12:44

Phoned local shop (there is only 1!). She can get me a hoover (1400 spin) for £490 or either a whirlpool, candy or hotpoint for £410 all with 1000 spin. They have a delivery twice a week as long as its in stock with their supplier. She is going to put all the leaflets together for me and check availability. I said I would pop in later to choose.

Have to say I'm really impressed. Don't think they charge delivery either.

Really helpful and friendly. Now I've just got to choose which one............

we just got a bottom of the range bosch from redhill for about 250 pounds - it was a which best buy about a year ago.

cornflakegirl · 16/01/2007 13:08

i was planning to get an indesit or an electrolux - didn't think we could afford a bosch - but i was convinced otherwise by everyone on here - and when we found it for 250 we were sold!

JanH · 16/01/2007 13:28

amtom (allmytimeonmumsnet, that's you, what a neat acronym!) - Hotpoint, Hoover and Whirlpool are all in Which's bottom 5 for reliability - Hotpoint is absolute bottom. Candy are OK.

Tricity Bendix, Miele and Bosch are 1/2/3 but sample sizes are 93/393/2104.

I just had a look at Redhill, they have this Bosch with timer display and 1400 spin for £354. You know it makes sense

cornflakegirl · 16/01/2007 14:23

this is our Bosch - it's a bit noisy, but otherwise fab - and for £240!

Piffle · 16/01/2007 15:57

it was an indesit washer dryer DREADFUL machine despite costing £500

JanH · 16/01/2007 16:08

I didn't think Indesit were allowed by law to charge more than £300 for their appliances

Good on Mr Piff for standing his ground in refusing another

Piffle · 16/01/2007 16:10

he is calm and gentle to a point, he does however have a stunningly evil way of getting things done his way....
Far more sophisticated than my reactions which involves a) stalking off saying F**k you all and slamming a door or
b) crying and foot stamping

allmytimeonmumsnet · 16/01/2007 17:03

Ha! Piffle. Ours was an indesit too. All the electrics packed up on this one, along with the door seal and finally exploding door. Its predecessor was also indesit and I think the motor went on that one!

JanH - I ordered the hoover one. Fingers crossed it will survive! I didn't see your post before I went or I might have thought twice. It was £490 but has a 1600 spin. They are bringing it on Friday, they know the area so won't get lost or come in a big van and get stuck and they are disposing of the old one for free.

I'm just not going to think about your post from now on!!!!!! [] I hate having to buy things like this. At least I can feel smug about supporting a lovely local business.

Oh, sorry, amtom - I wouldn't have posted that if I'd known you'd gone already

Anyway Hoovers are better than they used to be (encouraging ) And of course you will get better service from a local business. And 1600 spin is v impressive!

Piffle · 16/01/2007 17:21

1600 spin makes for ironing from hell though
spin ironing type garments on a lower spin 100-1200 for an easier life
of course our Miele has an easy iron setting though

allmytimeonmumsnet · 16/01/2007 18:12

Don't worry JanH. I'm glad of all the feedback at the end of the day. If I hadn't posted at all then I would probably just have ordered from comet and I'm glad I didn't. I looked at all the other links but I missed the redhill one of I would probably have a bosch one!
