Boys clothes...............Or lack of them

O.k, i finally agree.
I kept reading in alot of threads that there were always far more girls clothes to choose from than boys. I didn't have this prob last year as Ds was only 6 mths old but this year the choice is bloody crap.

Went to Asda today and there were about 4 rows of girls age 1-4 and another 3 rows aged 4-14.
Boys there was 2 rows aged 1-4 and 2 aged 4-14.
Bloody stupid i thought. Really struggled to find anything i liked at all. Managed to get him 2 tshirts, 2 pairs of shorts and a fleecy jacket.

Oh and hats (do asda realise it's summer) there was only a choice of 2 girls hats (mine didn't like either) and 1 boys.

So where is the best place to go for a good selection of boys clothes then ??

I popped into a NZ shop I have bought most of my 0-2 gear as they were having a sale. I though I'd get size 3 tops for next winter so I went into the boys section (ages 3-8, but small sizes so more 2+) and it was all graffiti logos and skaters, motor bikes and cartoon characters (but more manga than miffy). I was horrified that next year this is apparently what I will want my boy to look like. What age do boys stop liking Winnie the Pooh and Bob the Builder? Then again the girls stuff went from cute and frilly to prostitute so maybe I have to find a new shop.

I complained and got a response 20 minutes later - that must be a record. Here is the bit after the "sorry you are disappointed blah blah" bit

"I have passed on your feedback to our buyers.Unfortunately fashion dictates clothing trends but with out customer like yourself taking the time to make us aware of these issues we can not make changes. "

Hum, how it is fashionable for a 3 year old to look like he is about to mug a little old lady?

I stumbled upon this quite by accident, but Zara has very good clothes for boys. Fall season better than current summer season, though. Prices similar to Gap.

Sorry, but I like most of the boys stuff out there. The only things I refuse to buy are the military stuff like camouflage trousers etc. Comouflage stuff is for hiding and killing people! It does annoy me that there are racks and racks of girls stuff in comparison to boys though.

Amongst others, Pumpkin Patch had some lovely blue checked shirts and a bluss/orange/white thin stripey one (short sleeved, light weight). I got lovelt aqua floppy wide brimmed hats for DSs holiday wear, "zip off" trousers in a deep royal blue with orange details, great light weight jacket in beige/pale blue... Mothercare had some great bright T Shirts when I wandered through there recently.

DSs don't look like they're out to mug old ladies at all! They look incredibly cute and gorgeous. I stopped with Pooh bear etc at around 2 and, personally, I hated "character" tops after that and never ever bought them.

And I have the opposite problem to you skinny child parents - mine have short legs and round middles I guess clothes don't fit every child just like they don't fit every adult!

Beets jigsaw used to do boys so must be one of the others. The jigsaw boys clothes were utterly beautiful no logos and lovely soft colours and fabrics so it was a real pity. Having two girls and one boy must say the sense of dressing up is not the same. I try to make it great for parties but girls clothes win hands down and yes it is really annoying as he sees them have hair nails etc done and whilst I try gels and stuff with him it can make him feel left out.

Next aren;t too bad (price or design) for boys, M&S for staples, BHS isn't too bad either for basics, followed by a trip to Bratz for cool & trendy.

hoxtonchick · 24/05/2004 09:00

expatkat, which Zara shops do kids wear (please say one of the ones on Oxford St, I work in the West End)?

hoxtonchick · 24/05/2004 09:15

Answered my own question - the one near Bond St.

woodpops · 24/05/2004 21:39

I have totally the opposite problem. I find my dd (17 month) much harder to find clothes for than my ds. I get most of his clothes from Gap, Zara and Debenhams. I get a few bits from Next but get extreamly wazzed off with everthing having 'Next' or '82' on it!!!!! I think Zara is fantastic. Like santas groto. Anyone know where to get decent girls clothes from???

Kayleigh · 24/05/2004 21:43

I didn't know zara did kids clothes. Will have to get myself down to Oxford St. thank you for the information. My dh will not be happy with you though

hoxtonchick · 24/05/2004 22:16

Kayleigh, I snuck out at lunchtime, & the boys clothes in Zara were lovely. A bit more expensive than H&M but great designs & not a camouflage trouser in sight. I am infamous at work for my shopping habits but even my cynical colleagues were impressed.

hoxtonchick · 24/05/2004 22:19

Sorry, meant to say thanks expatkat .

I've found some fairly attractive(and v.cheap) boys stuff in Matalan - nice short-sleeved all in ones that I use as summer p-j's and 4 t-shirts for 4 quid (as my ds dribbles like Beckham I need large quantities of these). I avoid most of the girls stuff though, as it's generally pretty tacky. Otherwise I agree that boys get short-changed in most shops. I always go shopping for ds and come back with something lovely for dd.

Nutcracker · 24/05/2004 23:12

Never been in Zara or Bratz, do they have them in Brum ??

I think that there a couple of Bratz in Birmingham and 1 shoe shop of theirs with a different name.

Main shop is in Pallisades bottom floor next to the M&S side entrance - the shoe shop is opposite. One in the arcade that runs from behind Rackhams to the station, Its at the station end, past Boots on the left as you look at the station.

They carry different brands but the pallisades one is better for boys (IMO) and the other for girls. They also have one in Solihull as do Zara. Sure there must be a Zara in Birmingham but I can't think where, I use the Nottingham one or the Solihull branch.

Be warned though Bratz is expensive, designer wear only, Timberland, Burberry, Pampolina etc. I also think that there are only a small number around Birmingham. The new Monsoon in the Bull ring is very good for boys and girls - has the largest range I have seen in a Monsoon store.
