Boys clothes...............Or lack of them

O.k, i finally agree.
I kept reading in alot of threads that there were always far more girls clothes to choose from than boys. I didn't have this prob last year as Ds was only 6 mths old but this year the choice is bloody crap.

Went to Asda today and there were about 4 rows of girls age 1-4 and another 3 rows aged 4-14.
Boys there was 2 rows aged 1-4 and 2 aged 4-14.
Bloody stupid i thought. Really struggled to find anything i liked at all. Managed to get him 2 tshirts, 2 pairs of shorts and a fleecy jacket.

Oh and hats (do asda realise it's summer) there was only a choice of 2 girls hats (mine didn't like either) and 1 boys.

So where is the best place to go for a good selection of boys clothes then ??

Wish I knew... ds is 10 months and am really struggling. Jojo catalogue is OK, ditto Blooming Marvellous (although haven't bought recently, can't remember what age they go up to) and I hear the winter mini-Boden will be good (but pricey, obviously). Was in Mothercare recently and nearly as bad as Asda. Have sometimes bought things from large Boots stores but again, frustrating that there is so much more for girls. Oh, and how could I forget Next? Much better choice but like all the others do seem to think baby boys should be dressed like Action Man.

juniper68 · 23/05/2004 17:23

I use vertbaudet catalogue myself. I manage to buy a few things in Asda but you're right re:girls stuff.

Maybe we should all email Asda and give our point of view? I've often moaned and groaned to other mums in the store and mentioned it to the staff but they just ignored me.

gothicmama · 23/05/2004 17:25

whilst you're taliking to asda can you ask them to make practical clothes for girls there may be alot of choice but have you tried getting the grass stains out or telling a3 yo they cannt have off the shoulder or cropped belly top ffs they are children not little teenagers- sorry rant over - soory hijacked your thread on boys

juniper68 · 23/05/2004 17:30

I've just emailed them, I'd only forget if I left it otherwise lol.

Why don't you email them too gothicmama?

I kept it very polite though but told them I wasn't alone

skerriesmum · 23/05/2004 19:01

H&M are good, very plain things, unisex even

Kayleigh · 23/05/2004 19:03

Hennes is good. They do some bright colours but you have to have a good hunt through. I bought ds2 a pair of long cotton shorts in orange on saturday with a t-shirt in orange and blue to go with it -makes a really nice outfit. And very reasonable.
oh, also got him a short sleeve shirt for holiday in a sort of cheesecloth with light blue stripes on white background - was £2.99 and he looks adorable in it.

Yeah i will email them too.
I find next slightly better but agree with the Action man thing (she says, shoving Ds's camo trousers down the sofa )

H&M aren't too bad but i failed to find a pair of plain shorts, they all had weird things on.
Got some plain tshirts though 2 quid each

AAhhhhhhh! Don't get me started on this.

With 3 boys it's a f*cking nightmare!

popsycal · 23/05/2004 20:02

nor me!!!!!!!!!!!

skerriesmum · 23/05/2004 20:26

I was in Paris awhile back (without ds but was buying stuff for him the whole time, how sad am I!?) and in the fab H&M there got two long sleeve shirts and excellent space monkey pyjamas, also interesting socks with Japanese writing on them! Rumours abound they will open in Dublin soon... got loads for myself too by the way, summer tees etc.

frogs · 23/05/2004 21:21

Actually if you have a non-girly girl who refuses to wear anything pink or mauve, or anything with flowers/butterflies on life is pretty tricky too.

I emailed mini-boden when their latest spring/summer catalogue came out to complain that pretty much the entire girls' range came in candy shades of pink and purple, while all the boys' stuff was grunge-coloured and had fighter planes or cars on. I also requested the return of the nice unisex stuff they used to do in eg. navy/white stripes.

They mailed me back to say that their research showed that people WANTED the more polarised girls' and boys' stuff, and there was no demand for more neutral unisex clothing.

So, those of you who do want a bigger range of unisex gear, email them and tell them they're wrong!!!

gscrym · 23/05/2004 21:25

I so agree about the lack of boys clothes. Also I've got problems with DS as he's so skinny. 18-23 months just fits him in the length but the waist is too small so they slip off. Can't find a lot of Dungarees for him either

gingernut · 23/05/2004 21:40

Couldn't agree with you more. For trousers I usually buy Next but only because ds is skinny and they are narrower than most other makes, and for tops generally H&M where you can at least get some bright colours. Boots sometimes have some nice stuff but I haven't seen anything I like in there this year.

eddm I disagree about Blooming Marvellous though. In a recent catalogue they had half a page of toddler boys' clothes and about 4 pages of girls' stuff .

Heathcliffscathy · 23/05/2004 21:45

grrrr. i started a thread about this just last week...makes me mad!

allatsea · 23/05/2004 21:49

They had some decent boys stuff at the mothercare superstore, not as much as the girls, but at least a few pairs of shorts. The large Tesco superstores can be good too - I bought ds 2 pairs of jersey shorts for £5 and 3 t-shirts for £7 - nice quality stuff too. Most of the girls stuff was rather tarty though IMO
frogs - I have just emailed Boden to tell them to offer more unisex items

Paula71 · 23/05/2004 21:59

Gingernut thanks for the tip on Next, ds twins have skinny hips (obviously from their dad and not me!)

Trying not to dress twins alike is made harder by the lack of variety of clothing. Asda is terrible, I prefer Tesco both for quality and variety. Asda tend to have just plain, dark colours for boys too.

And although there may be tons of girls clothes as frogs said, they are all pink and frou-frou! If I had a daughter I'd hate dressing her like a bimbo or a tart (lets face it some of the clothes are a bit tarty! Wouldn't look out of place in an Ibiza nightclub.)

hoxtonchick · 23/05/2004 22:06

I like Gap, though their prices are ridiculous & I only ever buy stuff in the sale (everything goes in after about a month, just have to be persistent). H&M v. good too (I bought the same shirt as kayleigh!), quite funky. I also buy lots of stuff from Peacocks/Primark/Ethel Austin - super cheap but you can find some really nice things if you search.

jac34 · 23/05/2004 22:10

I only had to buy a few new things for my DS's this year, mainly in Primark, they have some great microfibre shorts for £2.50 a pair(never need ironing, and dry in no time), they still have loads of them left from last year. If I want to spend a bit more I usually go to Adams, or H&M, usually end up buying cheap shorts or jeans in Primark and teaming them up with trendier t-shirts and hooded tops from Adams.
The Jeans in Primark have elastic bits in the waist to tighten or loosen, very handy!!!

Some of the trousers in H&M and Pumpkin Patch have the button elastic jac34 mentions (like maternity trousers!) but on my skinny-hipped ds they look daft (like he has a wiggle or something ).

eddm · 23/05/2004 23:44

Gingernut re Blooming Marvellous ? haven't been there since we moved (used to live near their shop in London) and the catalogue obviously hasn't reached our new address yet. Damn. I really enjoyed buying newborn/ 0-3 months stuff for ds there am so sad they are letting us down with older boys.

eddm · 23/05/2004 23:45

Also re Gap, am banned from buying their by my younger sister who has (surprisingly) got very politically active on fair trade issues apparently Gap not good.
