GHDs - I know they are good but...

are they that good ?? I currenty have a wet/dry staightener which is pretty good on my 'bit longer than shoulder length' hair - if you persevere with it, but it doesn't seem to hold the temperature. I am toying with the idea of buying GHDs - do you still need the technique & patience to get good results ?

I wondered this when DD was wanting them for her birthday - I thought her old straighteners were getting her hair perfectly straight. Now I know there's straight and there's GHD straight.
(Straight is a very strange word, especially when you have to type it five times in three sentences)

brimfull · 26/12/2006 17:46

hi whizzz, neclace has had loads of compliments !!

As for the ghd's my teenage dd gets great results from her GHD's she bought last year.I've tried to flick my hair with them and end up looking ridiculous so for straightening they are really easy, and she has quite curly hair.

Whizzz · 26/12/2006 17:51

thanks. I know everyone raves about them but I guess I'm trying to justify the money !! I always get fed up and/or never seem to have the time to straighten my hair properly

(ggirl - thanks, it's nice to know !)

Right next question (I know I didn't ask the first, but could've!)...
which straighteners would be recomended please? Specific make/model?

Whizzz · 26/12/2006 17:56

yes ditto - on the merits of thin v wider plates

got some for xmas
Dogs bollox - I think for the really stunning styles you need a lot of products and effort, but for everyday sorting out your hair they are fab.I have remington wide plates which are ok good but with the new ghd barrel shaped ones, you can curl, wave and kink
I am so addicted.
I imagine it gets easier to use in time. but on my first go todya my hair looks a million times better
DP is in my good books as he also bought me a few products and they make a lot of difference/shne wise.

tommysmama · 26/12/2006 18:33

I have 2 pairs of GHD's - one spare incase they ever break as i could not live without them! they make a HUGE difference to your hair, guaranteed you will look better. I think they are amazing and 100x better than any other straighteners
Not much effort needed, they'll heat up in around 10-15 seconds and your hair will be comletely striaght within 2-3 minutes. its SOOO easy!
I also use mine for curling, bit trickier to get the hang of but the results are fab and it still only takes me a few minutes!

redshoes · 26/12/2006 18:56

dh got me some wide GHDs for xmas and they really are worth the money - it's just a different experience than using my old cheapo ones. He got me some products too which I used, and my hair is still looking great (ie straight) today. My hair is wavy/bushy and I've never got this result before outside a salon. I am a total convert!

longwaytogotobethlehem · 26/12/2006 19:24

so we know then that ghd's are the best although my friend a hairdresser says any straighteners that get really hot are just as good.

But what products do you use for that really nice shine? When i put product on mine it just makes it look heavy and flat.

dinny · 26/12/2006 20:07

GHDs are AMAZING. Have got wide plates and seriously couldn't be without them! I use thyat L'Oreal Hot Straight thing usually.

SHHHHsantahasbeen · 26/12/2006 20:13

I have pink ghd's and find them brill and easy to use. No patience or techniques needed and so very easy to use.
My hair until this weekend was just past my shoulders and was longer previously but took me around 10 mins max to style completely. Now with bobbed hair it takes me even less time..!!! . A worthwhile investment imho.

southeastastra · 26/12/2006 20:13

i think we should all embrace our natural hair with all its kinks this year! straight hair is very boring hehe

SHHHHsantahasbeen · 26/12/2006 20:14

btw I add nothing to style it beforehand BUT apply tigi girls toys serum type stuff aftrewards to tame the tops parts and the side and ends iykwim. Gives it a lovely gloss and shine.

christmosschops30 · 26/12/2006 20:14

best £90 i ever spent, have had mine for about 4 years now and couldnt live without them.

They are worth the money and easy to use, unless you want to curl with them which i still cant do but my hairdresser does it with ease

SHHHHsantahasbeen · 26/12/2006 20:16

crumbs atm with my new haircut I don't look to different to Don king on a morning..! The gorilla defo visis me during the night . Straighteners are a MUST..!

snowfunwhenyoureknackered · 26/12/2006 20:16

how do you use ghd's to curl your hair?

I can't do this with mine!

dinny · 26/12/2006 20:16

I got mine from here beautysleuth

arrived fast and a fair bit cheaper than anywhere else I could fine.

dinny · 26/12/2006 20:18

here you go!
curls

SHHHHsantahasbeen · 26/12/2006 20:21

sfwyk..to curl you need to take a section of hair, put straighteners at the tops of the hair but instead of holding as though you are to straighten you need to hold them side on iykwim, then turn them back on themself and gently pull towards the end of the section of hair. Let go and hey presto curls..!! Must admit I find it hard on certain bits of my hair and could only really do a small section as curls do need practice and patience..something I lack..!!!
Easier to do on someone elses hair than your own..!!

snowfunwhenyoureknackered · 26/12/2006 20:27

thanks!

but I don't get it, how can you start curling with the irons near your scalp? Surely the hair gets tangled in a knot in the GHD's? And are the irons held vertically to your head?

dinny · 26/12/2006 20:29

you just put them on first section, then instead of smoothing it down to ends you rotate it in different direction...

snowfunwhenyoureknackered · 26/12/2006 20:31

do you rotate it when you are pulling them through the hair section? do you just twist your hair round them whilst pulling? And do you pull into your head or away from your head?

cheeryface · 26/12/2006 21:00

how often do you use them? don't they wreck your hair?

tommysmama · 27/12/2006 01:07

i've been using mine every day for 5 years and they have done no significant damage.

A few split ends but who doesn't!

your hair doesnt get tangled when curling, you think it would but it just doesn't!

try it its really cool when its done. looks great.

expatinscotland · 27/12/2006 01:17

They really are that good.
